Pretoria Art Museum [Various Artists] [Pretoria, South Africa]
Click:
The Pretoria Art Museum occupies an entire city block in the eastern suburb of Arcadia. The current museum building dates back to 1962, although the museum art collection was founded in 1932 when a Lady Michaelis donated a large collection of artworks to the Pretoria city council after the death of her husband. The collection contains mainly South African work and includes pieces by famous South African artists such as Irma Stern, JH Pierneef and Gerard Sekoto.
The striking Pretoria Art Museum building, with its long low concrete facade, was built in 1962 in the distinctly modern International Style and was considered to be very much ahead of its time. As there were already other museums in South Africa boasting fine collections of European art, it was decided that the Pretoria Art Museum would focus primarily on collecting and displaying South African art. Over the years the initial collection of works by South Africa’s ‘Old Masters’ such as Pierneef, Hugo Naudé and Maggie Laubser has been complemented by a growing collection of contemporary art by artists such as Sam Nhlengethwa and Walter Oltmann.
As well as the permanent collection, the museum also houses a reference library and hosts regular temporary art exhibitions by local and international artists.
Guided tours of the museum collection are available and the museum specialises in art tours aimed at school children.
Guided tours for groups of a minimum of 10 people are offered when pre-booked. One option covering South African art is run at 10h00 and 13h00, and lasts an hour. Up to 100 learners can be accommodated at a cost of R10 per person. The other choice is a fun-filled two-hour tour for children aged four to 10 at a cost of R20 each.

Josh/EJ - City Center of Pretoria, South Africa - Andries Pretorius Statue
Pretoria was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, a leader of the Voortrekkers, who named it after his father Andries Pretorius. The elder Pretorius had become a national hero of the Voortrekkers after his victory over the Zulus in the Battle of Blood River. Andries Pretorius also negotiated the Sand River Convention (1852), in which Britain acknowledged the independence of the Transvaal. It became the capital of the South African Republic (ZAR) on 1 May 1860. The founding of Pretoria as the capital of the South African Republic can be seen as marking the end of the Boers' settlement movements of the Great Trek.

The purple JACARANDA trees in PRETORIA remind me of the beauty of South Africa (SA)
Sunday morning, September 25th 2016 -
Our taxi driver (in a typical, SA white van) took us from the hotel to the Gautrain station in Pretoria; early morning...
In the price of the ride (150 R that was less than USD $12.00 at the time), he included a complimentary express tour of the city for about one (1) hour.
We opened the taxi's window to talk to PRETORIA prettily as the driver took us by some of the SA capital city's highlights such as:
- UNISA (University of SA -- where SA stands for South Africa)
- University of Pretoria (aka TUKS)
- Telkom Communications Tower
- Various embassies surrounded by gorgeous, purple JACARANDA trees (in late September and early October, those purple petals spread on every street!)
- Pretoria's City Hall
- The Freedom Park (that tells the history of SA)
- Couple of tall apartment buildings
- The National Zoo
- SA Reserve Bank Building (tallest building at 150 m)
- Finally, we got off the taxi van for a short photo opp at the UNION Buildings (where one can see from outside the office of the President and the administrative offices; and the key, not to be missed gem = Nelson Mandela's impressive statue).
*** Seen in here is a lovely couple that had an engagement photoshoot.
TIP: Visit Pretoria in October because the city transforms itself into a purple sea. Why? Because of the 40,000+ jacaranda trees that light up the city's streets with their purple blooms.
