Old Broadgate Coventry
A compilation of images of Broadgate, Coventry, starting with some old engravings and ending with an image from 1946. The video also remembers the I.R.A. bomb attack on 25/8/1939 which killed 5 people and injured many more. Just over a year later, the heart of Coventry was effectively destroyed during the blitz of 14/15 November 1940.
Once again, thanks to Rob for allowing me to pool resources on this one. Visit his Historic Coventry website for more information on Broadgate:

Coventry City Medieval Wall discovered by Coventrian Paul Curtis whilst walking through Coventry Bat
Coventry City Medieval Wall was started in 1355 and completed in 1534
In the 14th and 15th Century Coventry had become the FOURTH largest trading town in England.
Local Merchants and Guildsmen had become prosperous off the back of the wool trade selling fine wool, cloths and yarns and other good to merchants from outside Coventry and overseas.
Goods made and manufactured in Coventry were exported to Europe AND all over the world by packhorses, and riverboats before being transferred to sailing ships that took our goods all over the world if someone
The wall was ordered to be demolished by King Charles II in 1662 and took 500 men just 3 weeks to tear down.

1000 Years of Coventry Heritage
An event in Coventry Cathedral to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the birth of Coventry. Through a program of dance, music and story telling we will walk through the key events of the last 1000 years of Coventry dating back to St. Osburga as the first woman of Coventry. As part of the celebration a Tapestry capturing the history of Coventry will be unveiled. Created and inspired by hundreds of people, this hand crafted work of art, incorporates multi-faith intergenerational work by schools and communities.
Pru Porretta plays the part of Lady Godiva and was the main organiser of this event involving hundreds of people and school children, as well as the force behind the creation of the tapestry.

Dissolution of The Monasteries - King Henry VIII in Coventry & Coventry Cathedral
On the 15th January 1539, 480 years ago , agents of Thomas Cromwell arrived at St Marys Benedictine Priory and Cathedral and asked the Prior for the keys to the Cathedral.
The Prior was confused, as far as he was aware they had agreed to hand over all the outlying buildings and the monks were to leave the Priory but the Cathedral was not part of the deal.
It seems Cromwell’s agents were in no mood for messing around and with no evidence to prove it was just the buildings after a little while the Prior agreed to give the keys over and so it became The only Cathedral that was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Perhaps it was a dislike of catholics, perhaps it was because of the value of the lead, timber and masonry. Perhaps it was because the Bishop at the time was none other than Rowland Lee (alongside Cromwell who played a major part in King Henry VIII’s divorce was the Bishop who it has to be said under some duress married King Henry VIIII to Anne Boleyn).
What we do know is he walked away with a handsome pension (maybe buying g his silence) and with no Cathedral to preside over his threat to Henry diminished.
The remains of the Cathedral can still be viewed today in Priory Row begins the Weatherspoon’s and Nando’s and in The Priory Visitors Centre and Priory Undercrofts.
Out of 800+ priories and Monasteries and convents closed why was COVENTRY the only Cathedral to be destroyed.
Please leave comments if you have any thoughts and share this with friends interested in History. Both episodes of Channel 4s Time Team visit to the site in Coventry are still available on You Tube

Micklegate Priory Revealed
The Centre for the Study of Christianity and Culture, University of York, has collaborated with the church of Holy Trinity Micklegate, York, to produce an interactive resource exploring the building's monastic past. Holy Trinity is the former priory church of Micklegate Priory, which continued life as a parish church (in a physically-reduced form) after the priory's dissolution in 1538.
The resource looks at the monastic precinct of Micklegate Priory through a detailed 3D reconstruction. Visitors can explore the precinct via interactive panoramic views in key locations, which also provide information 'hotspots' that present further interesting facts and information.
Recently, a second phase of the project expanded the resource to look at a day in the life of a priory monk. Again, through detailed, animated 3D reconstructions (and in this phase, also sound), the visitor can see how a monk lived during the priory's heyday in the 15th century.
