Prittlewell Prince (Saxon King) at Southend Museum
The King of bling from Prittlewell, the Prittlewell Prince. The Saxon king that was excavated in Prittlewell around 15 years ago is finally on display in a local museum. The Southend Museum houses the display and it is very interesting to go and have a look yourself. It is also interesting if you can find the Time Team episode they did about the excavation.

Prittlewell Square, an elegant garden and small park situated in the conservation area overlooking the Thames Estuary at Southend on Sea in Essex, England. The oldest park in town, Prittlewell Square lies within the Clifftown Conservation Area, which was designated in 1968 due to the historic and architectural significance of the area.

Does Southend Have An Ancient Religious Centre?
Southend is not particularly well known for its history - but hidden amongst the suburban sprawl are some gems. Priory Park, originally a Benedictine property, has a stream running through it which is where Prittlewell gets its name.
In the immediate area around this park however are lots of archaeological finds starting way back from the Paleolithic, and the site of an iron age fort. Are these finds and the landscape related?
This video explores whether the landscape can still give us clues to the past - was there an ancient stoneage or bronze age religious site here that has remained up until quite recently? Watch and let me know!

Priory Park - Southend (360)
Priory Park in Southend-On-Sea, Essex. The park is, or at least was, home to a Christian Priory that opened during the 11th century and was open until King Henry VIII's Dissolution of the monasteries between the years of 1536 and 1541.
The mound at the beginning of this video is actually a lot older, and is a reconstruction of a Saxon burial mound dated to the 7th century, and most likely contained the remains of one of the Kings of the Kingdom of Essex. It is likely this burial was not entirely Christian, and is likely the people at that time had duel-faith observance, whereby Christianity and Paganism were both accepted religions and sometimes followed simultaneously by individuals from that time.
There is a chance that the area had previous pagan religious significance then, before the site eventually became a monastery and a priory later on. After the dissolution of the monastery, the site became a home for some wealthy families over the years. During this video you are taken about the park and into the house which has kept some of the period decoration, but also a representation of the older Tudor parts elsewhere in the house.
Today the grounds are free for the public to access, and include the old monastery building as a free museum, park areas and well-maintained gardens.
