Rapa Nui Reef | Sinking + Scuba Diving Rapa Nui Reef | Deerfield Beach
Rapa Nui Reef floated 70' above its final resting place. The tugboat's horn blew and the barge slowly started to sink into the Atlantic off the coast of Deerfield Beach. everyone was excited. A new reef to scuba dive in South Florida.
Excitement slowly turned into sadness when one of the barge's corner started sinking faster than the others. Soon the whole edge is submerged as the south edge slowly rises out of the water then makes it's way into the ocean in a vertical motion. Silence. people are shocked of what just happened.
Did it right it's self? It's too soon to tell.
30 minutes later, over the radio it was announced, Rapa Nui Reef is upside down.
Everyone was shocked. Rapa Nui Reef. The one of a kind reef did not go as planned.
----- Scuba Diving Rapa Nui Reef -----
A giant stride off Pompano Dive Center's Sea Siren into the Atlantic. As we slowly descended the tag line. What condition will the Rapa Nui Reef be in was on everyone's mind. Will the sculptures be scattered around the barge?
With 20 foot visibility, we approached a rusty, rectangular object. No signs of Rapa Nui Reef. We reach the sand. Slowly fighting the current to see what's beneath the barge, no one was able to clearly define what we were looking at. We all knew we were looking at sadness. A major upset to the South Florida dive community.
As we made our way around the barge, pieces of the Rapa Nui Reef broke off and were scattered. Re-bar's was exposed and Rusty water spewed out of the barge as it continued to settle.
No one went below Rapa Nui Reef as it was not safe..
Rapa Nui Reef reached its final resting place 3 hours ago and we were among the first scuba divers to see it underwater.
It's sad sight which resulted from only the best intentions. We will remember the Rapa Nui Reef the way it was at The Cove 48 hours before.
A personal, special thanks goes out to the excellent team at Pompano Dive Center.

Amazing snorkeling video shot in Fort Lauderdale, Florida
SnorkelTV Episode 7! Somewhere underwater!
I have assembled yet some of the most awesome footage I had left in my pile of videos that I filmed (not all videos are interesting to see). I put them along the song Somewhere over the rainbow - Kamakawiwo'ole
I am sorry to all german snorkelers who won't get to see the video because UMG owns the copyrights to the music, and unless I am already rich and have connections, there is no way I can ever release this video without being flagged.
I start the video with my friend Ross Hurley, then I follow him and film a few french grunts and an adult french angelfish. As I swim up, I look down with the camera and observe a blue headed wrasse.
The picture that follows was taken with the same camera I filmed all the videos with. It was a Kodak Playsport zx3. But it is now broken. I replaced it with a Canon elph 300 HS and also purchased the WPDC41 underwater case. However, conditions have not been good for snorkeling in my area in quite some time (hurricane season always windy and current). I am looking forward to use it!
Ok so the fish at 0:42 is an adult stoplight parrot fish, it was the biggest I have seen on the reef so far, they are beautiful and abundant.
Right after that you see my perspective as I swam with a school of juvenile bar jacks. They are easily recognizable because of the blue stripe running from the bottom of their tail. You will see two more appearances of this school of jacks further in the video.
So now you get to see my closest encounter with a sea turtle yet, and it was the biggest I have seen yet as well! I had no fins on when I filmed this shot, so the turtle seemed less concerned about me, she let me come very close to her as I was very slow. I like turtles. Unfortunately, it swam away. So I faded the video into the bar jacks (2).
Now this video may be hard to see in 360p or 480p, but in 720p or 1080p HD, you can clearly see a whole family of atlantic reef squid. They are swimming in formation away from me, it was such a beautiful moment! I am very happy I got the chance to film this. In SnorkelTV episode 4, I have a very nice video shot of an atlantic reef squid from a closer perspective, but it is only a few seconds.
Again, yet another one of my favorite marine biology encounter. It was a juvenile spotted eagle ray. Full grown, they are black and covered with white spots. This young one was more of a brownish color, but still covered with white spots.
It is also the fastest swimmer I have seen since I snorkel! I could not catch it vacate with the camera. So I brought in another part of the bar jack video. This time you can see a pike fish in the back, and a few sergeant majors.
Now to all the fishermen out there, this next video will make you drool. It is a family of snook I swam with right on shore. They were very friendly and were running in circles around me, and let me come real close. I have about 2 minutes of footage of this snook encounter, but I had to put only a few seconds because the song was running short. I thought the Snook would go well along the crowd cheering to Kamakawiwo'ole. It appears as if they are cheering for the snook! On the last shot of snook, you can see what appears to be a permit swimming towards the snook, but I could be wrong.
On the ending shot, I set my camera on a mini tripod on the sand at about 3 feet deep, and I was sturring the sand with my hands in front of the camera, so that young fish would swim around looking for food that flies out of the sand.
I do not know what those fish are. I would like for someone to tell me.
I have filmed all of these videos. I filmed them on different snorkel journeys, right in front of my house. I love it.
If you have any snorkel footage you would like me to use in one of my videos, please do contact me! I ran out of footage, as it is not the right season right now, and I am too broke to travel.
To wrap it up, I would love it if you could leave me a comment and let me know what you think about the video, what part of the video you liked the most, tell me which animal is your favorite sea animal, talk to me about anything related with fish, please do! If you like what I am doing, feel free to click the like button and share my videos with your friends and family. I have a friend who told me his grand daughter wanted to watch snorkelTV episode 1 over and over and over again, just like dory the explorer lol!
I will also be documenting all my previous videos and future ones, filling out more information about the fish we see together! Free education!
Remember, snorkeling is awesome! it feels great to connect with nature and be surrounded with beautiful creatures! nothing to be afraid of!
