England 2019 Episode 18: Prudhoe Castle
Prudhoe Castle was one in a series of Norman Castles built along the River Tyne shortly after the 1066 Norman conquest. The purpose was to fend off invasion by the Scots, who made many successful incursions into northern England. In fact, Prudhoe was the only Northumberland castle never to be taken by a Scottish army, including surviving two sieges during the 1170s.
The castle was continuously occupied for over nine centuries until being opened to the public as an English Heritage site. The video shows mostly the picturesque ruined fortifications but there's also a fine manor house where the Percy family lived until 1986.
Visiting Prudhoe Castle, Unconquored Medieval Fortress.
A medieval treasure of a fortress, built by the de Umfraville family
(relatives of William the Conquoror) between 1100 and 1120 to guard a ford across the River Tyne at Prudhoe. The castle has been in continuous use for over 9 centuries. The original castle was besieged on two occasions by Scottish invaders and subsequently strengthened with the addition of a stone keep and great hall.
I hope you enjoy this wander around the castle and grounds and I a thank you for watching and for supporting my channel.
You are all AWESOME :)

Prudhoe Castle, Northumberland

Earthworks were dug on the site in the early 12th century and these were besieged by William the Lion, King of Scotland in 1173 and 1174. These sieges were unsuccessful but the threat of further attacks by the Scots caused Henry II to agree to a allow a stone castle to be built on the site.
The attractive square keep of Prudhoe Castle was constructed in around 1175 and was surrounded by curtain walls and a gatehouse. The keep was one of the first to be built in Northumberland.
In the 13th century a moat was dug and the castle was also provided with two barbicans and a stronger gatehouse. The gatehouse had a vaulted basement and a chapel on the first floor.
The chapel had a oriel window which is considered to be one of the earliest to be found in any English castle.
Prudhoe castle passed into the hands of the Percy family in 1381.
Prudhoe Castle
Prudhoe (pronouced prudah) was one of several Norman Castles built along the Tyne after the Norman conquest. The Percy family took it over from the Umfravilles and restored it. The castle survived two sieges during the 1170s and was the only castle in Northumberland to resist the Scots.

ITV News Prudhoe Castle Woods Flooding
ITV Tyne Tees News coverage of the longstanding problem of flooding in and around the woods at Prudhoe Castle and Low Prudhoe Industrial Estate.
During periods of heavy rainfall the station road surface water system often surges and gallons of water pour throughout the woods and footpaths. The water often contains foul flows which appear to be overflowing from the towns foul water sewers. It is intended to plumb into the existing problematic the additional flows from the recently passed plans for a huge town centre redevelopment.
Prudhoe Castle Woods Sewer Problems
Within 10 months of being repaired, a manhole cover in Prudhoe Castle Woods appears to have blown open during a period of heavy rain in June 2012. The water had a strong smell of sewage and appears to have travelled through the woods around the castle and nature reserve adjacent to Castlefields Estate.
The manhole is part of the Station Road surface water sewerage system. If the redevelopment plans for Prudhoe town centre come to fruition then there will be potentially an additional 1,200 litres of surface water, per minute going into the same system.
