The President described the history of the Pullman years, when African-Americans went on strike and eventually formed the first African-American union to receive an AFL charter - and he also spoke about what the historic strike meant to the American labor movement at the time and what that movement has meant to our country’s middle class ever since.

The district is significant for its historical origins in the Pullman Company, one of the most famous company towns in the United States, and scene of the violent 1894 Pullman strike. It was built for George Pullman as a place to produce the famous Pullman sleeping cars.Originally built beyond the Chicago city limits, it is now in what is the Pullman community area of Chicago, the district includes the Pullman factory and also the Hotel Florence, named after George Pullman's daughter. Also within the district is the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, named for the prominent leader A. Philip Randolph, which recognizes and explores African American labor history. Parts of the site, in recent decades have been owned by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency prior to gifting them to the federal government. Additional grounds remain owned by the state, as The Pullman State Historic Site. The Pullman District, including the national mounument, state historic site, and private homes is east of Cottage Grove Avenue, from East 103rd St. to East 115th St. It was named a Chicago Landmark district on October 16, 1972. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 8, 1969 and declared a National Historic Landmark on December 30, 1970.Preservationists had hoped to extend the district to include Schlitz Row, but the taverns located there have been demolished. The district was named a National Monument on February 19, 2015, making it a component of the National Park System. HUD Secretary visits historic Pullman housing redevelopment in Chicago
(April 17, 2012) U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Shaun Donovan today visited Chicago and toured the historic Pullman Wheelworks, a newly purchased 210-unit affordable housing building on Chicago's south side. Mercy Housing Lakefront and National Housing Trust/Enterprise Preservation Corporation (NHT/E) hosted the tour to highlight the latest preservation strategies they are employing together to address the region's affordable housing crisis.
Pullman Wheelworks is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is being redeveloped and preserved as part of an overall neighborhood revitalization plan, led by Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives (CNI). The plan also includes the rehabilitation of some of Pullman's historic and unique row homes through HUD's Neighborhood Stabilization Program.
Residents of the newly rehabbed building, scheduled for completion in about 18 months, will enjoy new and expanded community rooms, new management offices, newly developed and more secure entrances, more laundry rooms and a new computer room for training classes and general use. The apartments will also receive major renovations to kitchens, bathrooms, and balconies in addition to new windows throughout the building.
Obama Calls Chicago's Pullman District a 'Milestone' in US Journey
President Barack Obama's designation of Chicago's Pullman Historic District as a national monument on Thursday brings legal protections for the area, once regarded as one of the nation's most endangered historic sites.
The district's grand Victorian red-brick buildings once housed the machinery and people that were the beating heart of the Pullman Palace Car Co. in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
In its heyday, Pullman was the premier manufacturer of luxury rail cars. Pullman Historic Foundation President Michael Shymanski said Chicago was an ideal location for the operation, thanks to the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad.
“In the 1860s, Chicago was emerging as the rail hub of the nation,” Shymanski said.
Industrialist George Pullman designed the whole town. “The idea behind it was to make a place that was orderly, efficient, and beautiful for the people who wanted to work for the Pullman company and other people who wanted to live here,” Shymanski said.
By the 1900s, the district's streets were full of Pullman employees. The Pullman company became one of the largest employers of African-Americans, who worked as porters and staff on Pullman’s sleeper cars.
Among those porters was an ancestor to someone close to Obama.
A great-granddaughter of one porter “had the chance to go on to a great college and a great law school and had a chance to work for the mayor, and had the chance to climb the ladder of success, and serve as a leader in some of our city’s most important institutions, he said.
And I know this because she is the first lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama.”
The president said his wife’s ancestors also helped organize the first African-American labor union. Union leaders helped launch the civil rights movement of the 20th century, paving his way to the presidency.
“It’s a story of labor, civil rights, a story about African-Americans, said U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, an Illinois Democrat. I think the confirmation of what this site means made it compelling.”
Kelly, who encouraged the president to make Pullman a national monument, said that he worked in this area when he was a community organizer, and I think this will be a part of his legacy.”
But it almost wasn't. The ravages of time and fire prompted the National Trust for Historic Preservation to name Pullman one of the most endangered historic places in the United States.
“About 90 percent of the original housing exists, but only less than 10 percent of the original manufacturing buildings exist, Shymanski said. And that goes to reflect that the housing worked.”
Shymanski, who lives in the Pullman Historic District, said making the neighborhood a national monument would help preservation efforts and encourage people to visit the site to understand its role in shaping America.
“This place has been a milestone in our journey towards a more perfect union,” Obama said.
Though there are many historic locations throughout Chicago, Obama’s designation makes the Pullman Historic District the city's first national monument.

During the day there are trials and everyone can sit and listen to the band for free, and very close to the stage.
Of the 38 bridges spanning the Chicago River as it passes through the city of the same name, the most famous is undoubtedly that of Michigan Avenue. It was not just a technical marvel in its day, but its construction marked the historic moment when Chicago began to spread northward. The extension of Michigan Avenue across the bridge meant the birth of the legendary Magnificent Mile.

Captains Of Industry - George Pullman
Captains of Industry was envisioned as an inspirational, uplifting and public relations vehicle as all of North America recovered from The Great Depression. Recorded in the early 1930s by Atlas Radio Corporation of Canada, the transcribed canon comprised fifty-two biographical dramatizations of the more noteworthy industrialists and philanthropists of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Atlas Radio Corporation was founded in 1921 by David Louis Harris, a Jewish immigrant who became one of the pioneering radio, television and electronics manufacturers throughout Canada and The United States.
Captains of Industry, recorded in a 15-minute format, emphasized the entrepreneurial spirit, drive, and philanthropic work which characterized each of the fifty-two subjects of the series. Opening with the story of railroad and steel industrialist and noted philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the series went on the spotlight the era's most important movers and shakers of their respective industries.
