???? Purple Island or Al Khor Island, Al Khor, Qatar.????????
Purple Island also known as Al Khor Island or Jazirat bin Ghanim, is an island located in the municipality of Al Khor on the northeast coast of Qatar. It accommodates the only archaeological site in the country attributable to the second millennium BC.There are four main periods of occupation on the island, dating from as early as c. 2000 BC to as late as 1900 AD. The island is best known for being the site of operation of a Kassite-controlled purple dye industry in the second millennium BC
Location
Al Khor Island is located approximately 50 km north of the capital Doha. It is connected to land by a tapered dirt pathway which runs through a number of streams.
Archaeology
Neolithic
Definitive occupation of the island during the Neolithic period is inconclusive.Several Neolithic campsites and Ubaid potsherds were discovered approximately 6 km east of the island. It has been suggested that the island was visited by these Neolithic inhabitants.
Early Dilmun period
Pottery originating from the Dilmun civilization suggests the island was linked with the Bahrain-based civilization from c. 2000 to 1750 BC.Ceramics dating to the early Dilmun period consist mainly of medium-sized jars and cooking pots. The settlements dating to the Dilmun period may have been established to expedite trade journeys between Bahrain to the closest significant settlement in the Persian Gulf, Tell Abraq. Another scenario entails that the encampments were created by visiting fishermen or pearl fishers from Dilmun. It has also been suggested that the presence of pottery is indicative of trade between the inhabitants of Al Khor Island and the Dilmun civilization, though this is considered unlikely due to the scarce population of Qatar during this period.
Kassite period
The Kassites operated a purple dye industry on the island from c. 1400 to 1100 BC.There were also trade relations between the inhabitants of Qatar and the Kassite.Among the findings were 3,000,000 crushed snail shells and Kassite potsherds. It has been asserted that the island is the site of the earliest known production of purple shellfish dye.The dye was obtained from the Murex snail and dubbed Tyrian purple. The maroon coloring for Qatar's flag was selected in part due to the purple dye industry which existed on the island.
Sasanian period
Artifacts originating from the late Sasanian period, from c. 400 to 600 AD, were found.
Late Islamic period
Al Khor Island was inhabited during the late Islamic period, from c. 1700 to 1900.
Discovery
The Mission Archéologique Français à Qatar, a French team led by Jacques Tixier, discovered the site in 1976.

A Visit To PURPLE ISLAND (Alkhor-QATAR) / VLOG /One Of The Most Beatiful sightseeing place in QATAR.
Al Khor Island, also known as Jazirat bin Ghanim and Purple Island, is an island located in the municipality of Al Khor on the northeast coast of Qatar.
The island is situated near Al Khor and is only a forty-minute drive from Doha. After parking your car, you will set off on your walk along a raised pathway which leads you to the island. Either side of the pathway are the mangroves that seem to be teeming with life, making it an excellent nature trail for your children. They will enjoy spotting fish, collecting sticks and stones and discovering unusual looking plants and flowers.
Don't forget to bring water, shoes for the walk!

Facts behind the name ...PURPLE ISLAND...
1. The Kassites operated a purple dye industry on the island from 1400 to 1100 BC. Among the findings were 3,000,000 crushed snail shells and Kassite potsherds. It has been asserted that the island is the site of the earliest known production of purple shellfish dye. The dye was obtained from the Murex snail and dubbed Tyrian purple.
2. Purple flowers bloom in the month of Spring in the area.
DIRECTION TO REACH TO THE ISLAND BY YOUR CAR....
Purple Island is reached by driving to Al Khor and continuing towards Al Thakira. After passing two Roundabouts turn right at a newly build Al Meera Supermarket. At the T-Junction turn left and drive for about 5 km until you reach a signpost leading to a dirt-road saying “Flower Each Spring”. Follow this dirt-road for about 2 km in a very gentle right curve until you reach the rest of a former causeway and park your car.

Purple Island - Al Dhakira, Qatar
Purple Island is located at Al Dhakira, near Al Khor, which is an hours driving distance from Doha and 10 mins drive from Al khor. This place is a treat to anyone's eyes as it is one of the very few places with a very different landscape. The highlights of this place are mangrove forests, limestone mountains and the path itself. There are tiny lakes that cut across the walking path a few times and eventually drain into the sea

Pedestrian bridge provides access to Purple Island beaches by foot
Visitors to Jazirat Bin Ghannam,
commonly known as Purple Island, in the
Al Khor-Al Thakhira area north of Doha,
are a happier lot these days.
Thanks to a wooden pedestrian bridge
constructed recently, visitors can have
direct access to the beaches of the
island by foot without having to use
boats, as was the case before. The
pedestrian bridge comes as part of
the infrastructural development of the
place, according to a recent report in
local Arabic daily Arrayah. Visitors can
enjoy the scenic beauty of the place and
the mangroves located on both sides
of the bridge until they reach the rock
formations. Visitors have praised the
simple design of the bridge, which they
feel blends perfectly with the ambience
and further enhances the appeal of the
place. It also allows visitors to see the
marine life around it, while making it a
great spot for photography enthusiasts.
According to information available online,
the island owes its name to an ancient
purple dye producing site. Besides the
mangroves, other key attractions of
the island include small animals and
migratory birds, with the latter visiting
the place during the winter months. The
number of visitors to Purple Island is
expected to increase as the temperature
drops over the coming weeks.
