Moscow museum gathers all Russia's Jordaens works
(18 Sep 2019) LEAD IN:
Moscow's Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is drawing together all works by Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens that are owned by Russian museums.
Jordaens was one of the most prominent painters of the Flemish school, alongside Rubens and van Dyck.
STORY-LINE:
Russian Jordaens is an exhibit of all the painters' works owned by Russian museums.
Earlier this year, 18 paintings were first shown to the public at The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
Now, 18 paintings and 31 drawings have arrived in Moscow.
Our task was to show - using eloquent and characteristic exemplars - the artistic evolution of this wonderful Flemish painter. And to show all his masterpieces, including paintings and drawings, owned by Russian museums, explains curator Vadim Sadkov.
For the first time since 1794, Jordaens' The Lamentation has left St. Petersburg, where it hangs at Saint Alexander Nevsky Monastery.
It was Empress of Russia, Catherine the Great, who purchased Jordaens' monumental The Lamentation from a Berlin collection.
She later donated it to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg.
It was always thought that the painting was by Flemish master Rubens, but several years ago, Dutch art historian Arnout Balis identified that was in fact by Jordaens.
The works of Flemish artists such as Jordaens were heavily influenced by Rubens.
Many painters trained at the master's studio, including young Anthony van Dyck, who went on to become one of Flemish Baroque's greatest.
It's not the only recent discovery at the exhibit.
During the restoration process of Christ and the Samaritan Woman, specialists were able to find the signature of Jordaens' son, also called Jacob.
In the process of restoration, a signature of the son of Jordaens was discovered, says Vadim Sadkov.
His name is also Jacob, but he is Junior. And it is written there - Jacob Jordaens Junior. And this painting is yet the only one valid work of the son. And this painting belongs to the museum in Nizhny Novgorod and is now shown here.
Meleager and Atalanta was always considered to be a copy of a Jordaens paintings, but - again during the restoration process - specialists discovered the painter's signature.
Jordaens was born in Antwerp, Belgium in in 1593.
He was a student of Adam van Noort, a Belgium painter, who also taught Rubens.
Jordaens is famous for painting religious stories, metaphors on life and people of his time, as well as collaborating with artists such as Andries Daniels and Paul De Vos.
These are the scenes from the Old Testament, allegoric portraits, portraits commissioned by burghers of Antwerpen, as well as his collaborations with other artists, including still life painters, says Sadkov.
These paintings show the history of Russian art collection.
Empress Catherine the Great began buying Flemish artists for her palaces.
Although, she was not the only one interested in the Dutch masters. Russian aristocrats followed her example and started to collect paintings of Flemish masters, including Jordaens.
Odysseus and Polyphemus, a painting from a collection of Rubens, was brought to Russia in the 18th century and was in hands of a nobel family of Musin-Pushkin, then belonged to a Hermitage curator Osip Braz.
After Braz was sent to a Soviet prison camp, the state confiscated his collection.
Today, it's in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts' collection.

The statue of Lenin - From Moscow to Murmansk
St. Petersburg is the city where the Russian Revolution broke out in 1917. Lenin arrived from Switzerland to give his famous speech that brought the revolution. Jelle finds Lenin's statue back in an industrial area just outside St. Petersburg, ready to be restored.
In the first series: From Moscow to Magadan, Jelle Brandt Corstius traveled from West to East, focusing on the endless Russian countryside and the villages. In this second series: From Moscow to Murmansk, he travels from North to South along the largest river of Russia: the Volga River. A trip along the relatively unknown cities like Murmansk, Volgograd, Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod, but also to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Through topics like women in Russia, new censorship, the environmental problem from Russian perspective and the ideological vacuum, a relatively unknown side of Russia is once again exposed.

Viking Guided Tour: Walking Through Central Odessa
Viking tour guide Olga walked us past the important buildings and museums in central Odessa and along Primorsky: partial underground ruins of a Greek city recently unearthed by Archaeologists; a monument to Pushkin outside the former Odessa Stock Exchange; past gorgeous buildings, all built in a different style; another monument to Catherine the Great with Odessa founders Ribas, de Volan, Zubov and Potemkin at her feet; ending at the Opera House in its latest incarnation.
The first opera house was opened in 1810, destroyed by fire in 1873 and rebuilt in 1887. A shame that no performance was taking place during our visit because acoustics are supposed to be unique.
It was obvious that two short days in Odessa would not be enough...
Arrests at Moscow anti-corruption demo
(26 Mar 2017) Thousands of people crowded into Moscow's Pushkin Square on Sunday for an unsanctioned protest against the Russian government, the biggest gathering in a wave of nationwide protests that were the most extensive show of defiance in years.
Alexei Navalny, the anti-corruption campaigner who is leading the opposition to President Vladimir Putin, was arrested while walking from a nearby subway station to the demonstration at Pushkin Square.
Navalny and his Foundation for Fighting Corruption had called for the protests, which attracted hundreds or thousands in most sizeable Russian cities, from the Far East port of Vladivostok to the European heartland including St. Petersburg.
The protests were the largest coordinated outpourings of dissatisfaction in Russia since the massive 2011-12 demonstrations that followed a fraud-tainted parliamentary election.
Police estimated the Moscow crowd at about 7,000, but it could have been larger.
The one-hectare (2.5-acre) Pushkin Square was densely crowded as were sidewalks on the adjacent Tverskaya Street.
State news agency Tass cited Moscow police as saying about 200 people were arrested.

Russian censorship - From Moscow to Murmansk
Censorship in Russia is not limited to journalism: in all possible areas people are threatened and opposed. In this episode of 'From Moscow to Murmansk' Jelle Brandt Corstius brings attention to censorship in Russia and (death) threats to critical journalists, human rights activists and dissidents.

RUSSIA: PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION: PUTIN CAMPAIGN
Russian/Nat
The acting Russian President has an approval rating of around 50 percent, according to the latest opinion polls ahead of Sunday's presidential election.
But, while Vladimir Putin has an almost unassailable lead over his rivals, he is not sitting back and taking it easy in the run up to the 26 March poll.
Putin toured a car factory in western Russia on Tuesday and announced a 20 percent rise in the minimum wage.
Just days before Russia's presidential election, acting President Vladimir Putin was on the political campaign trail in western Russia on Tuesday, visiting a car factory and chatting to defence workers.
The trip to Nizhny Novgorod, about 400 kilometres (250 miles) east of Moscow, was one of several Putin has taken in recent weeks.
Most workers at the factory, which makes Volga cars and defence equipment, believe Putin has already won the election.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
It looks like Putin will win. He's a new man in there. This is why people fell in love with him. People are tired of the other candidates who have been around for the last ten years.
SUPER CAPTION: Gennady Zagrebnoy, Car factory worker
Putin drove the new model Volga car and gave it his acting Presidential seal of approval.
Trips like the one to the car plant are seen as an apparent bid to boost his commanding lead before Sunday's vote even though Putin has insisted that he is not campaigning.
Putin also announced on Tuesday that he had signed a decree raising the minimum wage for state workers by 20 percent from April 1.
The minimum wage for state workers is lower than the average monthly wage for other Russian workers, which is approximately 1,700 rubles (US 60 dollars) a month.
Putin's closest challenger, Communist party leader Gennady Zyuganov, is polling at about 20 percent.
The 10 other candidates are not seen as major threats.
Analysts say the biggest concern now is whether Putin will get more than 50 percent of the vote and avoid a runoff with Zyuganov.

San Petersburgo - Ciudad - Rusia
