Sale Primary School 545 Medieval Garden Party 1981 Pt. 3.
Please subscribe for future uploads
Sale Primary School No. 545 has a long tradition of holding an annual garden party. The Garden Party was instigated in 1934 at the suggestion of a mothers' club member, Mrs Glover, most likely my grandmother, Gwen (Laura). Its signature event is the maypole, a springtime rite; however, the garden party is now held in Autumn.
I was a classroom teacher at the school in the 1970s, and later became the school's music specialist. The music program was based on the philosophy of Carl Orff and used a holistic approach to music and movement. One of my roles as music specialist was to train the girls for the maypole dance and in this video I'm the person near the microphone blowing the whistle.
Marianne Parasiuk, Mary Frawley and myself co-ordinated a whole school integrated curriculum approach to the arts, related to various themes, of which the principal, Phillip Clerici, was very supportive. In 1980 and 1981 we chose a medieval theme, and the garden party provided the opportunity to show-case the pupils' academic and creative pursuits of the weeks leading up to the event. It was based on a play the children wrote, so each year-level performed in a colourful pageant of their own making, showing the full array of their creative, artistic talent.
The event was filmed and edited by Barry Sykes of the Victorian Education Department's audio visual department at Traralgon Teachers' Centre.
Part 3 of this three part video features what has become the crowning piece of Sale's historic garden party - the maypole. It would be difficult to find a woman schooled in the town before the 1960s who hasn't danced the maypole. I'm one of them. Personally, I think the maypole dance looked even more spectacular before the multi-colored pastel shades of ribbon were replaced by the rather bland school colours in the 1970s.
