HOBART, QUEENS DOMAIN PARK,THE WAR MEMORIAL
HANGING AT QUEENS DOMAIN PARK AND WAR MEMORIAL Hobart, capital of Australia's island state of Tasmania, sits on the River Derwent. At its fashionable Salamanca Place, old sandstone warehouses host galleries and cafes. Nearby is Battery Point, a historic district with narrow lanes and colonial-era cottages. The city's backdrop is 1,270m-high Mount Wellington, with sweeping views, plus hiking and cycling trails.
Queens Domain, Hobart
The area called the Queens Domain takes up most of this hill in the centre of the city, including the Botanical Gardens, Government House and the bush land up to the 'look-out' at the top. Recognised as being reserved for the people since the early days of the settlement, and frequently under threat from development, Parliament formally recognised its value as a public space in 1858.
This video was researched written and prepared by TMAG volunteer Sally Rackham and narrated by Noreen Le Mottee.

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens (RTBG), which cover an area of approximately 14 hectares (34.6 acres), were established in Hobart in 1818 and are located within the Queens Domain. The Gardens hold historic plant collections and a large number of significant trees, many dating back to the nineteenth century. It also has an increasing number of important conservation collections of Tasmanian plants, of which the King's Lomatia is one of the most unusual, and the world's only Subantarctic Plant House. Here, plants from subantarctic islands in high southern latitudes are displayed in a climatically-controlled environment, where chilly fogs and mists mirror the wet, cold conditions of their island homes. The plants of the Subantarctic Plant House have been collected by Gardens staff and associated scientists on field trips to Macquarie Island.More info:

DKO Architecture - Queens Domain
This apartment development is located on Melbourne’s bustling Queens Road, lined by buildings from various eras and different styles, including some proud contributions by the Melbourne modernist Frederick Romberg. Queens Domain acknowledges this important architectural precinct, immediately adjacent to the historic St Kilda Road. The building re-interprets existing elements, while showcasing the design and construction techniques of our time. The generous setback from Queens Road allows for the creation of a front yard for residents to enjoy. The apartments feature deep balconies, while the curved form of the tower provides shading, particularly on the west. With a generously appointed shared roof deck, residents experience the comfort and privilege of a private resort, 20 storeys in the sky, with breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Queens Domain respects the established setbacks and contours of the skyline, with the building’s outline softened by using exciting, next-generation materials with a range of textures and degrees of transparency, as well as curved balconies and façade elements. Balancing sculptural and structural imperatives, Queens Domain boast a contemporary design, while remaining respectful of its historic surroundings.

Day 5 Highlights 2011
The 2011 Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge reaches its conclusion in Hobart with competitors taking on a frantic final day of racing in the rolling hills and sparkling harbor of Tasmania's picturesque and cosmopolitan capital.
Australia's second oldest city, Hobart has developed over the last decade from a sleepy, pretty waterfront community to a vibrant, bustling centre that leads the country, if not the Southern Hemisphere, in art and culture.
The opening of the Henry Jones Art Hotel, a restored jam factory, in 2005 led the art revolution and the launch of Mona - the extraordinary Museum of Old and New Art -- at the start of 2011 has been described as the most significant addition to Australia's cultural landscape since the Sydney Opera House.
The day's racing, however, is all about exploring Hobart's natural beauty in the suburbs beside the Derwent River, through the city parks and in the foothills of the 1,300m-high Mount Wellington, which dominates the skyline and provides the ultimate weekend playground for locals and visitors alike.
Checkpoints will be dotted around the city with locations including Chimney Pot Hill, Knocklofty, Mount Nelson and Queens Domain on the western side and Lindisfarne, Montagu Bay and Rosny on the east. Competitors will set off from the Henry Jones Art Hotel with the task of visiting as many as possible during an allotted time.
The course highlights the city's ease of access to a range of wilderness regions, with Chimney Pot Hill, part of the Ridgeway reserve, offering an unbroken stretch of natural bush; Knocklofty a wild area of heath and open woodland leading to a 375m summit; and Mount Nelson, once the site for one of a chain of signal stations linking Hobart with Port Arthur and now a native bushland with sweeping views over Hobart and Storm Bay.
In the heart of the city, meanwhile, Queens Domain is an area of park and bush on the waterfront that preserves the last remnant of the area's original endemic grassland and has unearthed Aboriginal middens that date it back to long before European colonists arrived in 1803.
In 1860 the site was commissioned as an area that belongs to the people and was once used to house the Queens Battery, which defended the city from attack. It is now a popular place for gentle Sunday walks, a destination for sports and home to the Botanical Gardens, the Aquatic Centre and the grand Government House.
Across the water, the bays of Lindisfarne and Montagu provide access to a number of small hills around which several suburbs have developed. These were the first areas to be settled in the east of Hobart and their population boomed when the floating Hobart Bridge was built in 1943, followed by the Tasman Bridge constructed 21 years later.
