Black-tailed Godwit flock, Campfield Marsh RSPB Reserve - 16th April 2016
Over the past week a flock of Black-tailed Godwit have been using the wet meadows of the Reserve. These meadows have, over recent years, been managed specifically with breeding waders in mind: Lapwing, Curlew and Snipe - so it is good to see this flock, of now 52 birds, appreciating this wetted habitat too.
They are a fascinating wader to watch, particularly as they are now in their colourful Summer plumage. Lets hope that they linger a while.
Britain from Above #BfABorders Project, Time-lapse on the Solway Coast
A final Time Lapse of the wall art created with The Solway Nature Explorers (9-14yrs) at Campfield Marsh as part of our #BfABorders project with Britain from Above @Above Britain
The Solway Nature Explorers were asked to use natural pigments, mud and clay collected from the local area to paint patterns based on their observations of marks on the landscape as seen from the air in aerial photographs of the area, from the Britain from Above archive:
Great White Egret fishing, Campfield Marsh RSPB Reserve - 16th February 2012
On a cold very windy February day, watched the Great White Egret fishing on the wetlands to the RHS of the hide on North Plain Farm lonning, Campfield Marsh RSPB Reserve. It eventually flew from there and landed on a pool in front of the hide, where it continued to fish successfully. It can be clearly seen trampling to disturb, what seems to be, plentiful prey in these rushy margins. As a rare vagrant, this bird has now been present on the Reserve for three and a half months.
Ice Flows on the Solway Estuary 22 10 10
Pack ice is now building up on the Estuary. It is fascinating to watch it moving back and forth with the tides. This video was made looking across Campfield Marsh towards Scotland, at the other side of the estuary. It looks more like the Arctic than Cumbria, that's for sure.
