South African Steam: SANRASM South African National Railway And Steam Museum
WIth all the bad press on SANRASM lately, I thought I would return to a happier time when SANRASM was sort of intact, had working locomotives and could run trains... features 6A 454, Kitty, Hunslet, and the REGM 15BR.

South African Class 22E - PRASA Test Train
September, 27, 2016 the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) in conjunction with Transnet operated a special test train from Johannesburg to Cape Town.
The objective of the exercise was to thoroughly test the new 22E as a long distance passenger locomotive, a purpose for which it wasn't initially designed. The Class 22E is a dual voltage, 6200HP locomotive with co'co' wheel arrangement can easily handle such long distant trains single handed. This would also eliminate the need to change locomotives while traversing different voltage zones.
The train consisted of 21 newly refurbished mainline coaches and two locomotives. In the lead is the test subject, Class 22E, number 22-053 with GE diesel-electric number 44-041 following in second position. The 22E was designed for usage with modern freight trains operated by Transnet and is not equipped with vacuum brakes. However, the coaches used by PRASA are vacuum braked, hence the presence of the diesel.
Viewers can easily spot the makeshift irrigation tubing attached to the lead locomotive that was temporarily fitted. This allowed the driver to control the vacuum brakes from the lead locomotive while utilising the services from second locomotive.
The exercise was also repeated on other mainline routes throughout South Africa in the weeks that followed. This was also the first time either Class of locomotive had appeared in Western Cape.
Due to an unforeseen electrical supply problem in Cape Town the train was delayed in the city by some three hours. Leaving many Railfans waiting along the route - myself included. Luckily for me, I did manage to capture a few other trains while waiting.
South African Railways 'Red Devil' - July 13 2018
One of the most famous steam locomotives in the world, the South African Railways Class 26 No. 3450 'Red Devil' ran its first post-restoration passenger train on Friday the 13th of July 2018 from Cape Town to Robertson in the Western Cape of South Africa. Bad weather dogged the chase all along the route, but it also made for some moody and dramatic shots. Quite simply, this is one of the most historic steam passenger trains run in South Africa in the last 20 years! It was a thrill to chase the train and record these images. Thanks to the Ceres Rail Company and Bobbie Rudman and co. who restored the loco and made this possible.

Jewish and Railway Museums
Welcome to the tourism reality show, the Livingstone tour.
Tonight, on the Livingstone Tour.
Museums are mostly about history and memorabilia. In this episode, we delve into the history of Jews in Zambia and then look at some fine vintage steam locomotives from yesteryear.
The Railway Museum is located off Mosi O Tunya way, only 2.5 kilometers from the Livingstone museum, and approximately 9 kilometers away from the Victoria Falls.
The Jewish Museum and the Railway Museum are located within the same premises, providing rather distinct subject matters, making them appear unlikely neighbors. Both museums, however, have quite interesting historical information, and therefore, we brought the contestants here.
The Jewish Museum is an historical archive that focus on the arrival of Jews, their economic, social, and political contribution to Northern Rhodesia and Zambia from the early 1890s.

OUTINIQUA TRANSPORT MUSEUM, GARDEN ROUTE, SOUTH AFRICA
Outiniqua Transport Museum and the Outiniqua Pass Railway trip. South Africa
This is a look around the museum with its many trains, car display, old stagecoaches. It also features our trip on a power van through the Outiniqua Pass with fantastic scenary.
The Outeniqua Mountains form a mountain range located along the Garden Route of South Africa. They run parallel to the coast and form a continuous range with the Langeberg to the west and the Tsitsikamma Mountains to the east. The range was named Serra da Estrela ('Mountain of the Star') on old Portuguese charts.
In 1908 work started on a railway route over the range from George to Oudtshoorn. This required the building of seven tunnels and numerous long cuttings. The line was opened in August 1913.
The first road pass to cross the range into the Langkloof went via Duiwelskop, some 32 km east of George. In 1811 a new pass was constructed and named Cradock Pass after the Governor, Sir John Cradock. It was difficult to negotiate and became known as the 'Voortrekker Road'. In 1847 a vastly improved Montagu Pass was constructed by convict labour, and named after the Colonial Secretary, John Montagu. In 1943, to cope with the increasing demands of modern traffic, construction was started on the Outeniqua Pass, using the labour of Italian prisoners of war. At the end of World War II the Italians returned home with the greater part of the pass unfinished. The pass was opened to traffic in September 1951, having cost approximately £500 000.
Prasa begins open line testing on new commuter trains

Can South Africa's Failing Railways Be Saved? (2001)
End of the Line (2001) - Once the centre of South Africa's economy and life, the railway network is has now withered and died - leaving those who had been dependent on it with nothing.
Subscribe to Journeyman here:
Once-thriving towns lie derelict, the last few residents barely scratching a living. These towns were built for the railway - they supplied its workers and its commerce, but now the railway has become so inefficient it is no longer economical. The government is left with a quandary: to sell off the railways, or to try and revitalise it with public funds.
