Wind Cave National Park is in the southwestern corner of South Dakota. It's known for the vast, underground Wind Cave, with chambers like the Post Office and the Elks Room. Many of the cave’s walls are rich in honeycomb-shaped calcite formations known as boxwork. The park's prairie and pine forests are home to bison, elk and pronghorn antelopes. Trails include Rankin Ridge, with views of the Black Hills.

Wind Cave National Park & Custer State Park
Day 3 of 2018 Road Trip Visiting Wind Cave National Park than Custer State Park to hike the tallest point in South Dakota Black Elk Peak (Harney Peak) in the Black Hills National Forrest
2017 SOUTH DAKOTA ROADTRIP (with itinerary)
Pictures from a week long trip to South Dakota.
Basic Itinerary-
Day 1- Stayed in Sioux Falls, SD. Spent a few hours at Falls Park, which was a 5min walk from the hotel.
Day 2- Left Sioux Falls and continued on I-90 heading east towards the Badlands. Our first stop was at The Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. we spent about 1 1/2 hours there. Our second stop was at the Dignity Statue in Chamberlain, SD. We spent about an hour at the nice rest stop there overlooking the vast Missouri River. From there we continued to the Badlands National Park. We also stopped at The Ranch Store where we saw many prairie dogs. after that it was about 10 min to get to the campsite where we would be staying for the night. we stayed in the Cedar Pass campground in the Badlands. The rest of the night we walked around the Badlands and gazed at the stars at the evening ranger program there.
Day 3- We woke up to the sunrise at the Badlands. We got up early and hiked along the Cliff Shelf Nature Trail, where we saw beautiful views of the Badlands and wildlife in the early morning while everyone else was still asleep. (The Sun rose around 5:00am and we went hiking around 6:00am). After we that trail we went back to the campsite to pack up, and eat breakfast at the cedar pass lodge right next to the campsite. After breakfast we headed out to hike The Notch Trail. This trail starts off with a long wooden ladder following along the cliff face and it may be a strenuous hike but it is well worth it. the views are amazing. After that we drove along the scenic loop road to exit the park and then we got back on I-90 to head east towards Rapid City where we would be staying for the next few nights.
Day 4- We spent the day at Custer State Park hiking and driving where we saw plenty of wildlife including buffalo, pronghorn, deer, prairie dogs, and burros.
Day 5- We started off at Custer State Park. From there we headed to The crazy horse memorial. we only spent a few minutes there, quickly continuing on our way to Mt. Rushmore where we spent the rest of the day.
Day 6- We spent the day at Wind Cave National Park where we took a a guided tour of the cave that lasted just over an hour. after that we went hiking through the park along two short trails. We took the scenic drive along Iron Mountain Road to get back to Rapid City.
Day 7- We started off by taking a drive through spearfish canyon stopping to see waterfalls along the way. After that we hiked along a 1 mile trail in order to see Roughlock falls. After that we drove out to Wyoming to see Devils Tower National Monument. We spent a few hours there and then drove along a beautiful scenic route along country roads heading towards Belle Fourche where we had dinner and saw the geographical center of the nation.
Must Stops:
-The Badlands National Park
-Custer State Park
-Mt. Rushmore memorial
-Wind Cave National Park
-the Rankin Ridge hiking trail (Wind Cave)
-The Notch Trail (Badlands)
-Spearfish Canyon and Roughlock Falls
-Devils Tower National Monument
Nice places to visit:
-Falls Park, Has stunning waterfalls and great places to walk around, especially at sunset.
-The Corn Palace, Was under construction for the year while we were there but will look very nice once all construction is completed
-The Dignity Statue, A great place to stop with a wonderful view of the great Missouri River.
-Belle Fourche, a nice small town to stop in on the way back from Devils Tower national monument.
Things to miss:
-The Wall Drug Store, It is a Large, Disorganized, Tourist Trap. Not worth the stop.
-The Crazy Horse Memorial, It is not anywhere close to being finished and it is extremely expensive to do anything but see a bad view of it from the parking lot.
-Lookout Point hiking trail, The name is very misleading it is a long boring hike through very badly maintained trails. there are many more much better trails.

Wind Cave National Park and Custer State Park! Episode 056
What a busy day! We get to check another National Park off the list! Wind Cave is a park above the ground and below. The cave tour was great for kids. We went on the Garden of Eden tour. Arrive early because it was packed there! After our cave tour, we went home for dinner, then out to Custer State Park. There we saw many animals! We love seeing the animals in the natural habitat. This is the first time we get to see Elk! The Bison were right next to the road. The drive around Custer was very pretty. The begging burrows were not out tonight. Sadly there are only a few left after the wildfire that happened there.
