Steamboats On The Red
Looking at the shallow twists and turns of the Red River, its hard to imagine that steampowered paddlewheel boats were once the most important transportation link between St. Paul and Winnipeg. From the first in 1859 to the last that sank in 1909, Red River steamboats hauled thousands of settlers and millions of pounds of freight across the border. Although it lasted barely 50 years, the age of the steamboat forged a commercial network between the United States and Canada that exists to this day in the I29 corridor.
To shine a spotlight on this important piece of prairie history, Steamboats on the Red examines the history of steamboat transportation on the Red River and the impact this important trade route had on the development of the region.

RARE CARS! CP 3116 Leads Train With Cars For Scrap Heading North on the CP Winnipeg Beach Sub
My second filmed train on the CP Winnipeg Beach Subdivision, and it is a great one! On the front and back of the train there are several old cars which have WATER CAR - OUT OF SERVICE written on them. There were also two CP 40' foot boxcars on the train! These cars are apparently being sent for scrap in Selkirk.
The Winnipeg Beach Sub is used by CP from Winnipeg to Selkirk, then they interchange with the Lake Line Railroad who take some of the cars up to Gimli, just north of Winnipeg Beach. This line is at risk of being abandoned by CP, as many branch lines are.

From Asia to the Americas: Late Ice Age Colonization Corridors (E. James Dixon)
From Asia to the Americas: Late Ice Age Colonization Corridors
E. James Dixon, University of New Mexico
Archeological evidence indicates that people first entered the North America during the last Ice Age by at least 16,000 years ago. Based on genetic and research, Northeast Asia appears to be the most probable region of origin. Researchers have advanced two primary theories about the first movement of people into to the Americas. The traditional theory postulates human migration across the Bering Land Bridge and then southward through a deglaciation corridor in western Canada. However, current research supports a maritime route along the southern coast of the Bering Land Bridge and Gulf of Alaska, and then southward along the Northwest Coast.
