Discovering Bristol’s Pirate Past - Bristol Quayside
We have visited Bristol in the South West of England a number of times and despite being a frequent visitor to the city it is surprising how many places we just ignore and walk past.
This time I (Mr W) took some time and tried the free ‘Bristol Quayside Adventure’ audio tour which you can find at
Just to confirm this is NOT a sponsored video, this was my own little trip.
There are also a number of other audio tours about Bristol which guide you through the history of the city.
The tour I chose takes you back to Bristol’s pirate past around the old city and harbour with stories about Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, the real Robinson Crusoe and the privateers of 18th century Bristol.
The Bristol audio tours take about 1 to 2 hours to complete depending on how long you stop and are definitely worth giving a go.
The main stops on the Bristol Quayside Walk:
1:40 The Merchants Venturers Almshouses, King Street
2:44 The Theatre Royal, King Street
3:04 The Llandoger Trow
4:07 Welsh Back
4:49 Queen Square
6:01 Woodes Rogers, Merchant and Privateer
6:51 The Hole in the Wall pub
7:50 Redcliffe Caves
8:46 The Ostrich Inn
9:01 Bristol Harbour

Landmarks of Redcliffe and the 'Floating Harbour' - Bristol
Redcliffe, Bristol:
Redcliffe, also known as Redcliff, is a district of the English port city of Bristol, adjoining the city centre. It is bounded by the loop of the Floating Harbour (including Bathurst Basin) to the west, north and east, the New Cut of the River Avon to the south. Most of Redcliffe lies within the city ward of Lawrence Hill, although the westernmost section, including the cliffs and hill from which the area takes its name, is in Cabot ward.[1][2] Bristol Temple Meads station is located in Redcliffe.
Redcliffe takes its name from the red sandstone cliffs which line the southern side of the Floating Harbour, behind Phoenix Wharf and Redcliffe Wharf. These cliffs are honey-combed with tunnels, known as the Redcliffe Caves, constructed both to extract sand for the local glass making industry and to act as store houses for goods. Part of the last remaining glass kiln in the area is now the Kiln Restaurant of the Ramada Bristol City Hotel in Redcliffe Way.[3][4]
The parish church of St. Mary Redcliffe is one of Bristol's best known churches, with a spire soaring to a height of 292 ft (90m), making it the tallest building in the city.
Bristol Harbour:
Bristol Harbour is the harbour in the city of Bristol, England. The harbour covers an area of 70 acres (28.3 ha). It has existed since the 13th century but was developed into its current form in the early 19th century by installing lock gates on a tidal stretch of the River Avon in the centre of the city and providing a tidal by-pass for the river. It is often called the Floating Harbour as the water level remains constant and it is not affected by the state of the tide on the river.
United States:
The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S.) or America (/əˈmɛrɪkə/), is a federal republic[16][17] composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions.[fn 6] Forty-eight states and the federal district are contiguous and located in North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.[19]
At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million km2)[20] and with over 324 million people, the United States is the world's third- or fourth-largest country by total area,[fn 7] and the third-most populous. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city is New York City; twelve other major metropolitan areas—each with at least 4.5 million inhabitants—are Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Riverside.

St Vincent's Cave. Bristol England
West also built a tunnel from the Observatory to St Vincent's Cave (also known as Ghyston's Cave or Giant's Cave), which opens onto St Vincent's Rocks on the cliff face, 250 feet (76 m) above the floor of the Avon gorge and 90 feet (27 m) below the cliff top.[8] The tunnel which is 200 feet (61 m) long, took two years to build at a cost of £1300, and first opened to the public in 1837.[6]
This cave was first mentioned as being a chapel in the year A.D. 305 and excavations, in which Romano-British pottery has been found, have revealed that it has been both a holy place and a place of refuge at various times in its history. Although the cave is in limestone, there are few formations in the natural passages.
Redcliffe Caves
A group of us went on a tour of Redcliffe Caves, a labyrinth of man made chambers beneath the district of Redcliffe - Bristol.
Our enthusiastic tour guide, Alan, was very knowledgeable on the caves having excavated (removed 'infill') many of the chambers himself with his caving club.
This video is a short excerpt from his 20minute initial presentation before we actually walked in to the bowels of the cave network.
Due to the fact it was filmed underground (in the dark) I have added a few visual aids to stimulate the eye...

Underground River Frome in Bristol. An underground adventure using new kayak
The first of two activities on a November day that was dry. Weather looked good so off we went.
Both where underground tunnels in Bristol. This one used the new blow up kayak and is a jolly on the river Frome under parts of the city center.
We soon found the door that I have seen on 3 other youtube videos. Stood up there and had some food when we came back to it after going off in one direction then back, dinner time and the area that is ok to get out and stand up. Can get the bags out the kayak.
Never got to the gated off bit by the Watershed, cafe, food area so a bit of a let down but was and interesting thing to do and been trying all summer. Decided to do this monday and was a few days later.
Wanted to get to this but could not. A nice old bridge underground as well on the map. Not sure we got that far.
The 2nd activity, still getting wet but no boat needed is here.
Original video that gave me the idea is here.
