Banff National Park could be the highlight of Season 3. RVing the Canadian Rockies seems to get even better every week. In this episode we start out in Coeur d’Alene, ID and talk about how to be prepared to cross the border. Then we leave for the Fairmont Hotel next to Lake Louise at the crack of 12:09 before making our way to Lake Moraine. We get up close with a bear & caribou on the Bow Valley Parkway. Then we take a hike at Johnston Canyon Lower Falls.

Banff National Park Wild Images - Lynx at Deer Lodge

March 2013 - This video was captured when conservation officer, Alex Taylor, responded to a call from Deer Lodge near Lake Louse in Banff National Park. Upon arriving, he found a female lynx apparently transfixed by her own reflection in a basement window. We speculate the lynx thought that her reflection was another animal posing a possible threat to her kitten, so she stayed to keep an eye on it. Alex observed to ensure mother and kitten avoided the road and parking lot until they reunited. This has been a special winter for normally reclusive lynx. We can't be certain, but we think they have been more conspicuous while taking advantage of a cyclical rise in the local snowshoe hare population. A big thank you to Deer Lodge for securing the area and helping guests observe from a safe distance. Photo comparisons suggest that this is the same pair we saw a few weeks ago near the highway.

Reflection Canyon Timelapse

Reflection Canyon is an awe-inspiring offshoot of Lake Powell in southern Utah. It is accessible only by a 50-mile 4wd road followed by 8 miles of hiking. I filmed this montage during 2 nights in April 2016 and 4 nights in April 2019. The water level during our 2019 visit was the second-lowest it has ever been, exceeded only by 2005, and this revealed the almost-never-seen final S curve of the canyon.

In 2016, we saw zero other campers during the time we were there. In the ensuing years, it became popular on Instagram and other social media sites. In 2019, there were 10-20 people per night, almost all of whom were photographers. There was trash shoved under rocks and we found a pile of camping gear under a bush that had been abandoned by an overloaded person attempting to hike out. Many people we met had horror stories of being unprepared and getting lost along the hike. There is no easy water access. Between the lack of drinking water and the enormous cliffs, it's only a matter of time until a fatality occurs out there. I worry that that Reflection Canyon is becoming the next Horseshoe Bend ( It's being loved to death.

Let's respect the area. It's time to implement a permit system and encourage Leave No Trace ethics.

The lake appeared as if by magic as we crested the ridge. It was in teardrop-silver in colour and it was shaped like a perfectly flat disc of metal. No sound rang out from the shimmering emptiness of space around it. Monastery quiet, it was lined with pine trees and the whiff of mint wafted up to us. We decided to make our way to its decanter clear shore. The idyllic scene took our breath away. Unruffled by wind or rain, it was vault still and restful. The only sounds were the bumbling of bees and the heavy echo of a raven crawking.
Out on the lake, flopping trout were slapping the surface. They were hoping to catch one of the squadron of flies that buzzed about. The heaven-leaking light added a golden tint to the face of the lake and it was paradise. A startling eureka moment came unbidden, which involved the beauty of the natural world. I kept it to myself. The nipping midges didn’t take away from the pleasure of that day. I can still see the rain-pearled grass in my mind’s eye. I remember the saccharine sweet smell of that grass. I remember that the water tasted like the nectar of the gods. Most of all, I remember how it felt to be young on that special day.

Kicking Horse Mountain Wedding in Golden, BC // Adventure Couple Alanna & Kevin's Wedding Teaser

These two are all about adventure. Now adventure isn't all fun. Confusion, self-doubt, getting lost, and then finding your way again can sometimes be part of the process. It is the willingness to choose this less worn pathway over comfort that leads to a richer, fuller life of new experience, creativity, growth and expanded horizons.

Adventure sets people out from the crowd. Alanna & Kevin's wedding was no doubt an exceptional day, and will stand out in my mind for a long time. Along with the mountain backdrop in Golden, BC and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, they followed their path down the aisle and are now husband and wife.

Their wedding video was so much fun to shoot. I’ve had this particular reflection shot in my mind for a long time now, and I was so pumped to see how it turned out. The mountains are a huge part of the lives of Alanna and Kevin, and their relationship. So much so that we set an extra day aside to shoot them doing their favourite activity together, mountain biking! I couldn’t be more pleased with their wedding teaser video. Now onto editing their highlight film and feature more of their incredible day.
