Bike Ride at Regent Park Golf Course (closed 2015)
This is a recording of a bike ride that I went on in May 2016 along the paths that run around the old Regent Park Golf Course in Fort Mill SC. The course closed down in 2015 and it appears a subdivision of homes, called Saxon Homes, are going to be built on the Front 9 of the old course:
0:00 - Let's go!
2:45 - Sign announcing the new homes being built on some of the course property.
3:45 - The path borders or goes through several neighborhoods, as shown here.
5:35 - On the way to the tunnel under the railroad tracks. My guess is that this bridge for the train
has been in place for over 100 years.
7:45 - Approaching on of the hairpin turns on the course.
8:00 - Coming up on Scary Bridge #1. I call them scary because they've been in a state of
disrepair for a bit and the first time I went over it, I wasn't sure if I was going to make it
across!
9:12 - Coming down this path, I noticed some kind of bird off to the left. When it saw me hauling
over the knoll, it ran off to the right into the woods. I'm not sure what kind of bird it was, I
honestly think it could have been a peacock but it was probably some kind of large
pheasant.
12:00 - Approaching Scary Bridge #2. This one is longer and higher than the last one.
13:30 - Back through the tunnel and on to more of the Back 9.
18:00 - These folks on the right have a nice view out their back window... until homes are built here!
18:30 - Here I get to whip through the woods a bit. If you watch the whole video, you'll see a lot of
sections like this. They're fun!
19:05 - Crossing through the same neighborhood as before and up to the clubhouse and other
buildings that made up the old golf course.
23:30 - On the way down to the tunnel to get to the Front 9.
24:40 - Swanky houses on the right.
25:25 - Another hairpin turn.
26:45 - Here is a very steep and curvy part of the path. I had to walk up this part but I'm holding my
bike nearly upright so there's not much exaggeration on the steepness of this section. I'm
not sure why they didn't do something a little different here but Carolinians are not known
for good civil engineering practices. :)
28:00 - More swanky homes at the top of the hill.
28:20 - Scared a rabbit off through here but he was on the left of the field-of-view. There's plenty of
wildlife along these paths though! Not sure where the path to the left leads, there was a sign
that said to the Front 3 Tee but I figured it was backtracking so I kept going straight.
28:45 - CRASH! Well, almost. I hadn't been on this section before and didn't gauge my speed right
and kinda sorta went off road. Not harm done, though!
31:25 - Approaching the back lot of the Pyramid House, an office building that was left over from
the Jim Bakker/PTL days. I could have just headed home from here but I wanted to see
where the path led so despite my exhaustion, I kept going.
32:45 - Took a breather here and panned the small lake that's along the path. There are actually
numerous water hazards throughout the entire course.
33:30 - I realized that I had made the loop when I saw the tunnel so I just turned around to get into
the lot of the Pyramid House to head on home to cold water and a cold shower!
35:15 - Let's go home!

Knights Castle Part 2 of 2
Aerial tour pf the property that once was Knights Castle. Part 2 of 2. Part 1 of 2 highlights the baseball water tower still standing tall off of Exit 88 I-77.
Knights Stadium was the home of the International League's Charlotte Knights from 1990 to 2013. It sat 10,002 fans. The park was actually across the state line from Charlotte, North Carolina in Fort Mill, South Carolina. The stadium closed at the end of the 2013 season and the Knights moved to BB&T Ballpark in downtown Charlotte for the 2014 season.
Knights Stadium is easily accessible from Interstate 77. Exit 88 (Gold Hill Road) connects the expressway with the stadium. Near the stadium is a water tower painted to resemble a baseball on a tee, which can be seen from Interstate 77.
The stadium was built to Major League Baseball specifications to be used should Charlotte land a major league team, and was designed to expand to 40,000 seats.
During construction, the Knights, then a member of the Class AA Southern League, played in an 8,000-seat temporary stadium known as Knights Castle. The present stadium was originally known as Knights Castle, but was renamed to Knights Stadium in the late 1990s. The stadium was still known among Charlotteans as The Castle.
The venue hosted the 1997 and 1998 Big South Conference Baseball Tournaments, won by UNC Greensboro and Liberty, respectively. It also hosted the 2000 and 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Tournaments, won by Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, respectively.
On July 4, 2007, a franchise record 15,427 fans attended the game between the Knights and the Durham Bulls.
The stadium hosted its last Knights game on September 2, 2013, a 4-0 Knights victory over the Gwinnett Braves. After the game, several longtime employees dug up home plate and each of the bases and presented them to team mascot Homer the Dragon. Homer then saluted Knights Stadium one last time, and boarded a helicopter bound for Uptown Charlotte and BB&T Ballpark.
In June 2014, York County sold the land to Cato Corporation, a Charlotte-based retailer of women's fashions and accessories. The contract Cato signed permits them to use the land for any industrial, commercial or residential purpose. The stadium was demolished in early 2015.
Taste of Fort Mill
The Taste of Fort Mill hit another home run - a sold out crowd and a lot of money equals a big win. 20 food vendors from all over the Fort Mill area came to the Springfield Golf Club pavilion, for many it was a return visit. The businesses - which mostly included restaurants shared their favorite dishes and the company Tipsy Barrel had wine tastings for the guests. The real highlight of the evening is it was all to raise money for the Palmetto School in Rock Hill - which is located at the Children's Attention Home.

Rush Creek golf course closed indefinitely due to flooding
Last week’s record rainfall has caused all sorts of problems at Rush Creek Golf Club. Water woes remained visible Monday all around the course. On the 12th hole, a boat was actually being used because so much rainwater had collected on the fairway.
As a result, Rush Creek Golf Club is closed indefinitely.
Once the rains came we had to shut down, said Derek Stendahl, general manager for Rush Creek. I've been here since we opened in 96. We had a couple days where maybe we had to close down because of some water and rain, but nothing like this. This is unprecedented for us.
For Rush Creek this was the imperfect storm. Golf fans from 24 states and a few countries were ready to flock to Rush Creek to play there during Ryder Cup week.
To lose it now and around the Ryder Cup time is another blow for us, Stendahl said. This is about as bad a timing as you can get.
Because of the flooding, Rush Creek will lose tens of thousands in lost green fees and restoration costs. However, the course has weathered storms in the past and officials are not daunted by last week's record rainfall.
We'll come back, Stendahl said. We've come back from a lot of things out here. We lost 60 trees earlier in July.

Words at War: Who Dare To Live / Here Is Your War / To All Hands
USS Ancon (AGC-4) was an ocean liner acquired by the United States Navy during World War II and converted to a combined headquarters and communications command ship.
Ancon anchored off Fedhala, French Morocco on November 8 and began lowering her boats at 0533. The first troops were debarked an hour later. During the course of the assault, men on the ship witnessed the sinking of four other transports, and Ancon sent out boats to rescue their survivors. On November 12 the transport headed out and, three days later, put into Casablanca harbor. She got underway on the 15th with a convoy bound for Norfolk.
After a brief pause there, Ancon traveled to Brooklyn, New York for voyage repairs. A brief period of sea trials preceded the ship's loading cargo and troops for transportation to Algeria. She sailed on January 14, 1943 as a member of the Naval Transport Service. The ship reached Oran on the 26th and spent five days discharging her cargo before heading back toward New York City, where she arrived on February 13. On that day, the vessel was reassigned to the Atlantic Fleet Amphibious Forces. On the 16th, Ancon entered the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia, to undergo conversion to a combined headquarters and communications command ship. She was redesignated AGC-4 on February 26.
Following the completion of the yard work on April 21, Ancon held trials and exercises in the Chesapeake Bay through May and into early June when she was designated the flagship of the Commander of the Atlantic Fleet Amphibious Forces. The ship got underway for Oran on June 8 with Task Force (TF) 85. The ship had been selected to participate in the invasion of Sicily, and her preparations continued after her arrival at Oran on June 22.
Carrying Rear Admiral Alan G. Kirk, Commander, TF 85, and Lieutenant General Omar Bradley on board, Ancon sailed on July 5 for the waters off Sicily. She reached the transport area off Scoglitti on the 10th and lowered her boats early that morning. Despite enemy fire, the ship remained off Scoglitti providing communications services through the 12th and then got underway to return to North Africa. At the end of a fortnight there, she shifted to Mostaganem, Algeria, on July 29. In mid-August, the vessel moved to Algiers. During her periods in port, she prepared for the upcoming invasion of mainland Italy for which she had been designated flagship for the Commander of the 8th Fleet Amphibious Forces in Northwest African Waters.
On September 6, Ancon got underway for Salerno. During the operation, the ship carried Lieutenant General Mark Wayne Clark who commanded the 5th Army. At 0330 on September 9, the first wave of Allied troops hit the beach. Thereafter, she remained in the transport area, undergoing nearly continuous enemy air harassment, until she moved to Palermo, Sicily, to pick up ammunition to replenish her sister ships. She returned to the area off Salerno on the 15th but, the next day, arrived back in Palermo.
After two weeks in that Sicilian port, Ancon shaped a course for Algiers. She reached that port on October 2 and spent almost six weeks undergoing repairs and replenishment. In mid-November, she set sail for the United Kingdom and, on November 25, arrived in Devonport, England, where she was designated the flagship of the 11th Amphibious Force. An extended period of repairs and preparations for the impending invasion of France kept Ancon occupied through the winter and much of the spring participating in numerous training exercises with other Allied warships. On May 25, King George VI of the United Kingdom and Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery visited the ship.
The preparations culminated on June 5, when Ancon got underway for Baie de la Seine, France. She served as flagship for the assault forces that landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy. Throughout the invasion, the ship provided instructions for forces both afloat and ashore. She transferred various units of the Army command to headquarters ashore and made her small boats available to other ships to carry personnel and materials to the beachhead. On June 27, she got underway to return to England and, the next day, arrived at Portland.
Ancon remained in British waters through late September, when she sailed in a convoy bound for the East Coast of the United States. She reached Charleston, South Carolina on October 9 and was then assigned to the Amphibious Training Command. At the completion of repairs at the Charleston Navy Yard on December 21, the ship got underway for sea trials. Five days later, she shaped a course for the Pacific. On the last day of 1944, the ship transited the Panama Canal and joined the Pacific Fleet. She continued on to San Diego, California, where she arrived on January 9, 1945.

SUMMARY
=======
Virginia ( (listen)), officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States located between the Atlantic Coast and the Appalachian Mountains. Virginia is nicknamed the Old Dominion due to its status as the first English colonial possession established in mainland North America and Mother of Presidents because eight U.S. presidents were born there, more than any other state. The geography and climate of the Commonwealth are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond; Virginia Beach is the most populous city, and Fairfax County is the most populous political subdivision. The Commonwealth's estimated population as of 2017 is over 8.4 million. The area's history begins with several indigenous groups, including the Powhatan. In 1607 the London Company established the Colony of Virginia as the first permanent New World English colony. Slave labor and the land acquired from displaced Native American tribes each played a significant role in the colony's early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the 13 Colonies in the American Revolution. In the American Civil War, Virginia’s Secession Convention resolved to join the Confederacy, and Virginia’s First Wheeling Convention resolved to remain in the Union; that led to the creation of West Virginia. Although the Commonwealth was under one-party rule for nearly a century following Reconstruction, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia. The Virginia General Assembly is the oldest continuous law-making body in the New World. The state government was ranked most effective by the Pew Center on the States in both 2005 and 2008. It is unique in how it treats cities and counties equally, manages local roads, and prohibits its governors from serving consecutive terms. Virginia's economy has many sectors: agriculture in the Shenandoah Valley; federal agencies in Northern Virginia, including the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA); and military facilities in Hampton Roads, the site of the region's main seaport.
