MILFORD SOUND CRUISE with Real Journeys - Queenstown to Milford Sound
Today, I went on an incredible journey to Milford Sound, New Zealand. Originally, I wanted to rent a car to go there for a Milford Sound Cruise, but that would have been a long drive from Queenstown and I just didn't want to do it myself.
So I asked my hotel to book me on the best bus they knew of. And I am SO glad they did!
Milford Sound really makes you feel tiny. Even the drive down from Queenstown is amazing. I told out driver along the way that it was so impressive, I'd feel like I got my money's worth even if we didn't make it to Milford Sound.
I took my trip with Real Journeys and it was about $200 NZD. The driver was fantastic! He narrated the trip the whole way down, using personal experiences to paint a picture of the history of Fiordlands National Park. He was amazing.
Can't recommend Real Journeys highly enough. I'm not one for bus tours, but this one was really worth it, in my opinion.
You can read more about that experience here
And sorry about the sound in some places. The wind was really blowing hard. And while I have a great microphone, I don't think the windscreen was attached properly. Still, it's pretty great!

Bus trip to Milford sound, Queenstown, New Zealand
Bus trip to Milford sound, New Zealand
It was our third day in Queenstown, we planned to visit Milford sound. Milford sound is one of most beautiful and iconic places in New Zealand. It is the wettest place in NZ, and it rains for about 200 days a year.
We got up early and caught the coach at 7am. It tool five and a half hours to get there, on the way the driver stopped by some locations and allowed us to take pictures. The driver is very friendly and provides a lot of information..
The cruise to the Milford sound is one hour and forty five minutes. The weather was raining but because of this, more waterfalls formed so the sight was spectacular. The boat went underneath the waterfall and we got really wet. This was an unforgettable trip to Milford Sound.
The information below is from the website
Situated on the west coast of the South Island, Milford Sound is a fusion of spectacular natural features with amazing visual cues around every corner.'
Described by Rudyard Kipling as the 'eighth wonder of the world', Milford Sound was carved by glaciers during the ice ages. Breathtaking in any weather, the fiord's cliffs rise vertically from the dark waters, mountain peaks scrape the sky and waterfalls cascade downwards from as high as 1000 metres. When it rains in Milford Sound, and it often does, those waterfalls multiply with magnificent effect.

QUEENSTOWN: Freezing weather and SNOW in this spectacular town in NEW ZEALAND ❄️
SUBSCRIBE: - Here's my very first day in this spectacular city (Queenstown) at the South Island of New Zealand and instead of sun and 5-8 degrees, I hit snow, sleet and -2 degree temperatures. Here's how this beautiful place looks like during snow and freezing temperatures. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. New Zealand is an island nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses – that of the North Island, or Te Ika-a-Māui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu – and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga.

Queenstown Travel Guide - New Zealand Beautiful Experience
Queenstown Travel Guide - New Zealand Beautiful Experience
Queenstown is a scenic town in the South Island of New Zealand. It's one of the most beautiful regions and offers year round attractions. The town sits on the edge of Lake Wakatipu and is surrounded by the Southern Alps. The most remarkable sight is the Remarkables, which is a saw-toothed range of mountains on the opposite side of the lake from the town.
Queenstown lies at the only outlet to Lake Wakatipu (a bridge goes over the Kawarau River at Frankton), one of Otago and New Zealand's most scenic lakes. It caters for tourists on a wide range of budgets, from backpackers to luxury tourists. In many respects Queenstown can be a tourist trap. However, reasonable prices and bargains can be found for those prepared to look for them.
Queenstown is a party town during high seasons. If you plan on getting a good night's sleep, then you might consider staying slightly out of town. It is common to see people on the street until 05:00, coming back from the disco or pub. If you are looking for a relaxing scenic holiday, Wanaka (an hour's drive away) is smaller and more tranquil. First time visitors to Queenstown frequently struggle with the where to stay question.
Visitors attracted by Queenstown’s nightlife may prefer a CBD location with easy access to Queenstown’s more than 50 bars Queenstown is widely regarded as an activity-based town. Those less interested in the bright lights will prefer one of the neighbourhoods surrounding the CBD. These neighbourhoods promise the best of both worlds – easy access to the town centre from a more peaceful base.
The Glenorchy Road area offers luxury lodges, bed & breakfasts and vacation rentals with lake views and a sense of wilderness. The Kingston Road area has luxury lodges with mountain views and vacation rentals with lake views. The Gibbston Valley has a range of accommodations set amongst vineyards. Those attracted by history & culture tend to gravitate to Queenstown’s historic precinct – Arrowtown.
The town and surrounding area was originally settled by Europeans and a substantial Chinese population for gold mining and farming in 1860s. After the decline of goldmining, Queenstown became a sleepy rural town, popular as a summer getaway. In 1947, New Zealand's first commercial skifield, Coronet Peak, opened and since then the town has grown into a world class tourist resort. There are now 4 commercial skifields within easy driving of Queenstown.
The Queenstown town centre itself is small enough to walk around. Parking is at a premium and can be hard to find during the day. For further distance a bus or car is necessary. There are a number of tour operators to be found in Queenstown's centre. Transport to adventure activities is often part of the tour package. Some operators may pick up from your accommodation.
The spectacular mountain scenery and Lake Wakatipu dominate the view from many parts of town. Most attractions in Queenstown make the most of the view. It is enough reason to spend time in Queenstown if you choose not to do anything else.
One of the best views is from the top of Bob's Peak reached by the Skyline Gondola. Breathtaking views of Coronet Peak, The Remarkables mountain range and across Lake Wakatipu to Cecil and Walter Peaks. It's truly magnificent and awe-inspiring!
The drive to Glenorchy, 50 minutes north up Lake Wakatipu, is rated as one of the top scenic drives in the world. The Gibbston Valley wine area is 20 minutes drive from Queenstown by the ancient Kawarau Gorge.

The view from the window of the Jetstar as it makes its final approach to landing in Queenstown, NZ. In other cities, you see just buildings and not really fantastic landscapes. Flight from Queenstown to Milford Sound, NZ
Early June 2014 I flew from Queenstown to Milford Sound, New Zealand, in a Cessna 172R
It was a late afternoon flight, with us being the last aircraft to leave Milford Sound in order to make it back in time with the curfew at Queenstown Airport.
Milford Sound is definitely the MOST beautiful place I have ever flown into and this video gives you a taste of what it is like
