Reptile World Serpentarium St. Cloud Florida
Reptile World Serpentarium, located just east of St. Cloud, Florida on highway 192 offers visitors one of the finest snakes of the world exhibits in the country. Cobras, mambas, rattlesnakes, giant pythons along with 60 other species are presented in clean indoor glass displays. Alligators, crocodiles, iguanas and turtles are also on view accompanied by a few crazy parrots. Since 1972 we have been producing snake venom, supplying over 300 universities and a number of pharmaceutical companies with venom for research, medicine and antivenom production for the continental United States. Venom Shows take place at noon and three where you can watch up close, the handling of cobras and vipers for the collection of venom. After the show a hands on snake experience is available for the adventurous visitor. Call 407-892-6905 for information.
Reptile World Serpentarium in St Cloud
Reptile World And Serpentarium
this sign located in Saint Cloud belongs
to one of the most unique attractions in
all of Florida reptile world and Serpentarium is home to a collection of snakes
lizards turtles a nile crocodile Pete the
alligator and more
this is George VanHorn who since the age of 6
became fascinated with snakes
gathering sea snakes near San Salvador
one year led him on a journey back to
Miami to mentor with Bill Haas at his
Serpentarium, I made it out to the Serpentarium with the Sea Snakes and Bill Haas, he was ready, he had these containers and he mixed up all this sea water and we put one snake in each container and when we got through I was leaving and he said
how would you like a job and I said, Sold! He said uniforms and $10.00 dollars a day, this was in 1968, and I said I couldn't be
happier, that was my dream to work there.
George has shared his fascination
of snakes with people in all walks of
life but of all the exhibits here it is the Venom
shows that holds great interest in these
are the stars of the show.
George and his beautiful wife Rosa handle these deadly and powerful creatures but they still treat them with the greatest respect.6 days a week,2 times a day at noon and at 3 George and
Rosa milk about 6snakes during their venom
extraction shows.The venom carefully
extracted must then be prepared for
scientific use
we have to do a certain amount of analytical work here then it goes to Salt Lake City
they do more work. Some of it goes to Australia where they use it to titer up sheep, to immunize the sheep and produce the antibodies that is the Anti-Venom that eventually comes back here to the states.
All of our Coral Snake venom goes up to the company up in Michigan, Pfizer is making the Coral Snake anti-venom, which is supposed to be out and available the beginning of next year.
We will send university venom or purified venom constituents that they use, for example, there are components now that they found that actually lock on too receptor sights in brain and neuronal receptors and they can label those with an isotope and they can put that in the system and actually look at synaptic tissue in the brain using some of these venom constituents.
Some of those things are very useful in tracking and documenting things that happen, well for example, you know, people who come down with Alzheimers
That's been the majority of our work here for the last 43 years.
George and his Serpentarium have been
a fixture in Saint Cloud over forty two
successful years we asked him to share a
thought about the future of Saint Cloud,
Well my thing is, you know I don't know how politics work, but the thing is but the focus of the people
that have the power so to speak in Saint Cloud has to be to help these businesses become great. You know, like help a restaurant, not put road blocks in the way, but to encourage them. Instead of saying, lets get more people, lets get more people, lets get what we got GREAT, and the people will follow. You know what I'm saying.
that's over restaurant not making
roadblocks

It has been estimated that 7,000–8,000 people per year receive venomous bites in the United States, and only five of those people die. Most fatal bites are attributed to the eastern and western diamondback rattlesnake while some bites are cause by exotic snakes as well, such as the Malaysian king cobra in this specific case.
Snake expert George Van Horn survived two king cobra bites but almost died due to medical malpractice in 1995. I visited George at his Reptile World Serpentarium in St Cloud and recorded this short but revealing interview in 2013.

Driving around St. Cloud, Florida
St. Cloud is a city in northern Osceola County, Florida, United States. It is located on the southern shore of East Lake Tohopekaliga in Central Florida, approximately 26 miles (41.8 km) southeast of Orlando.
St. Cloud has tried to separate itself from neighboring cities, and particularly the theme parks, by promoting an image of small-town life, and by attempting to make itself economically less dependent on Kissimmee. On March 6, 2006, St. Cloud introduced CyberSpot, a program which gives residents free high-speed wireless Internet access. The city then ended Cyberspot, quoting it's too costly. The city is served by the Osceola Library System.

Without anti-venom being readily available and administered, a bite from any of these snakes could be deadly, in a very short time.
BTW all the containers at the milking station contain venomous snakes.
