Stellenbosch Travel Guide - An South African Adventure
Stellenbosch Travel Guide - An South African Adventure
Stellenbosch is a city in the Western Cape of South Africa and is the heart of the Cape Winelands, South Africa's prime wine region. Stellenbosch (founded in 1679) is about 50 km east of Cape Town and is the second oldest town in South Africa. It was named (like Simon's Town) after the former Governor Simon van der Stel. The town is situated on the banks of the Eerste River ('First River') and has some fine examples of Cape Dutch architecture. It is also known as 'Eikestad' ('Oak City') because of its oak tree lined streets. Wines from the Stellenbosch region are known internationally and rank among the best in the world.
Stellenbosch is also home to one of the country's oldest established universities with over 25000 students. There is a bustling night life during the university term-time, with many night clubs catering for young people. Stellenbosch is a diverse city, although many Afrikaans speaking people still reside in the area and Afrikaans as a language is still often used in day to day life. Due to the University, many Euopean and American exchange students roam the streets.
Stellenbosch is small enough that the entire city centre can easily be covered on foot. The Tourism Bureau also has a few cycles to rent. A curiosity is that there are no street signs. If you look closely you will see that the street names are indicated in yellow (in Afrikaans) on the edge of the sidewalks.
A walking tour of Stellenbosch provides fascinating glimpses of colonial Dutch architecture. The Stellenbosch Tourism and Information Bureau, 36 Market St., organizes one and a half hour guided tours at 11.00 and 15.00 Monday to Friday (R80pp) and special groups can also be arranged for on request. Alternatively, buy the brochure Historical Stellenbosch on Foot from the Bureau for R5 and guide yourselves. There are many good restaurants in the town. The area around Church Street is informally known as the local restaurant district, with approximately 19 venues within a four block radius.
Stellenbosch is 53 km (33 mi) east of Cape Town via National Route N1. Stellenbosch is in a hilly region of the Cape Winelands, and is sheltered in a valley at an average elevation of 136 m (446 ft), flanked on the west by Papegaaiberg (Afrikaans: Parrot Mountain), which is actually a hill. To the south is Stellenbosch Mountain; to the east and southeast are the Jonkershoek, Drakenstein, and Simonsberg mountains.

[Wikipedia] Albany, South Africa
Albany, South Africa (also known as Cape Borders, Cape Frontier, Settler Country, and Western Region) was a district in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Grahamstown was traditionally the administrative capital, cultural centre and largest town of the Albany district.
The area was previously known as the 'Zuurveld' by migrating Boer farmers in the late 18th century, and it lay near the boundary between the Cape Colony and the traditional Xhosa lands to the east. The 1820 Settlers were instrumental in settling and farming the district and giving it some of its distinctive local culture. The ANC government merged the Albany area with the large Xhosa township of Alice as the municipal area of 'Cacadu' [1].
BO-KAAP TOUR | CAPE TOWN TRAVEL GUIDE [2019]
Cape Town Travel Guide: Bo-Kaap Tour
Join me as I take you on a tour of the Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, South Africa. Take a stroll through the multi-coloured rows of houses of mixed Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture. Previously all the houses had to be white, while on lease to the slaves but eventually this rule was lifted. The slaves were then allowed to buy the properties and all the houses were painted bright colours by their owners as an expression of their freedom.
Today the Bo-Kaap community is a significant part of our cultural heritage and has officially been preserved as a heritage site.

District Six Museum
In the museum you can see a map of the area, where they had been moved all the second-class people, pictures of their houses and streets.
District Six was as a memorial to the forced movement of 60,000 inhabitants of various races in District Six during Apartheid in South Africa.
The museum also presented the development plan of the area, which would help still living here people to improve living conditions and, at the same time, preserve the unique identity of this part of Cape Town. By the way, the famous natives of these areas yavlyayutsyatsya: famous jazz musician of world renown, Abdullah Ibrahim and artist Mark Dollard.
Grand Parade and City Hall
Cape Town’s City Hall was built in 1905 in Italian Renaissance style, and is one of the last Victorian-style sandstone structures in the Mother City. Despite showing its age, Cape Town’s iconic City Hall continues to be sought out by urban explorers.
Upon entering, beautiful mosaic floors lead to a marble staircase, which guides visitors upwards to vintage stained glass and a 3 165-pipe organ. Its classical, Darling Street facade, and an impressive half-size replica of London’s Big Ben, are also a source of fascination to visitors, particularly those who have been to London.
Bo-Kaap - it's a terrific place, which certainly can be called a true multinational and cultural center of Cape Town. In addition, Bo-Kaap is a historical monument of Malay culture. During the quarter, there is always something to see. For example, the magnificent Mosque Nurul Islam, the construction of which dates back to 1844, or on the incomparable museum, built in 1760, which is almost completely preserve the original design and is a high level of culture of the early settlers of the Muslim. The entire interior of the museum is designed in stile19 century.
Bo-Kaap - this amazing and stunning place, hidden from the hustle and bustle. Its colorful houses, painted in a variety of colors, cozy cobbled streets and beautiful neighborhood with magnificent mountains create a fantastic atmosphere, which just drunk from the first seconds of your stay in the neighborhood Bo-Kaap.
Table Mountain
In Cape Town you can hear the legend: that the Creator, admiring his creation, touched the ground, and in this place formed a flat area. So there was Table Mountain - a place where the sun shines during the day always, and at night the stars are visible, so that it seems to them, you can reach out a hand.
Table Mountain in Cape Town, so called because that is similar to the table: the top of her not sharp and flat. The mountain is surrounded by steep cliffs almost - Devil's Peak and Lion's Head. It is huge, majestic and languid Kuta in clouds like a queen in a fur coat. Sometimes clouds descend or ascend in a way that turned into tablecloth hanging off the table.

Horse Memorial, Port Elizabeth - The South African Statue Saga
How far will South Africa go? The San and Khoi were the first people in South Africa. The African tribes who came from Central and East Africa, went to war with the San / Khoi and dispossessed them of their land and so on. How come then do black extremist politicians get it right to destroy South African statues of any kind, or even ask for them to come down - where if push comes to shove, the existing San / Khoi, and all South Africans, have the right to ask for black folk's statues to come down too then, and cities & streets to be re-named after San / Khoi leaders and so on - and to top it all, South African land must then be handed back to the San & Khoi. How is this all being missed? Time for South Africans to put their foot down, and live with all history, good or bad. Yes, the worst of the statues (eg: Verwoerd, who helped Apartheid along so much) should be removed to museums, but why all the other statues. Black folk did much the same to the San / Khoi as what the Europeans did to black folk. Fair is fair, shall all the black statues be removed too?

More than 80% of the population, black and colored, was not able to walk freely on the streets due to past racial discrimination, but now everyone is walking together. I feel much more diversified in this city than in other parts of southern Africa. I can meet people here from every continent in the world. People from all over North America, Asia, South America and Africa come here. This diversity appears throughout the city. In the center of the city where black people walk, there stands the statue of the Dutchman Jan van Riebeck. He wanted to build a base of supply for ships here to Asia and began bringing in slaves to carry out the plan. Under this tree, slaves traded like goods. They had to build a gorgeous city during the day and be trapped in a dark barn at night. When Jan van Liebeck arrived, there was no infrastructure here, and the land was in need of maintenance. So I needed a work force to do those things. That was the main task of the slaves who were brought here. So the presence of this city now is thanks to our ancestors who were slaves. Although 60,000 people brought to this place died as slaves, their lives have been remembered forever.
