The Richard Wagner Museum, Lake Lucerne, Switzerland
The Richard Wagner Museum is housed in what was Wagner’s own home overlooking the fabulous Lake Lucerne, with Mount Pilatus in the distance. Welcome to my film of the Wagner Museum and its idyllic surroundings, accompanied by his music:The Ride of the Valkyries.
Getting there
As usual in Switzerland, the best way to travel to this museum dedicated to the life and work of Richard Wagner is not in your own car, and in this case not even on public transport, but on foot along the lake shore from Lucerne. (It will take you about half an hour, and the path is not too difficult.) If you prefer to use public transport, the most atmospheric way to arrive at Wagner’s houe is by boat from Lucerne to Tribschen. It leaves from Quay KKL and only takes ten minutes. If you prefer a bus you need the number 6, 7 or 8 from Lucerne; get off at Wartegg from where it is only a ten minute walk: follow the signs. If you must use a car you need to follow the Tribschenstrasse from the Bundesplatz, and again it is sign posted. There is a map on the museum’s very good website.
Opening times
The Wagner Museum is only open in the summer, from April to November,
11.00 to 17.00 but closed Mondays except Easter Monday and Whit Monday.
There is a café.
The building you see today, as in my video, dates from 1800, when it was a gentleman’s country mansion, standing on a little rise with a good view of the lake. Wagner only lived here for six years before moving to Bayreuth in 1872, and he didn’t own the house, but the city of Lucerne was able to buy it in 1931 and open the museum in 1933. The ground floor houses the permanent exhibition about Richard Wagner and his music, and upstairs they put on temporary exhibitions. (I was only able to film the outside.) There are also occasional concerts and special events such as lectures. The museum is supported by the Swiss Richard Wagner Society.
The Life of Richard Wagner (in Lucerne and elsewhere).
Although Wagner lived in various places in Europe, (Dresden, Venice, and Paris, as well as Switzerland) he was actually German, the ninth child of a clerk in the Leipzig Police Department. Richard Wagner was born in 1813, and his musical talent was awakened at the age of 14 when he heard Beethoven’s 7th Symphony. He studied musical composition at Leipzig University, and his own Symphony in C Major was performed in Prague and Leipzig in 1832 and 1833 respectively.
Wagner had a turbulent life of music, adulterous love affairs, break-ups and periods of poverty, until King Ludwig II of Bavaria brought him to Münich and supported him fiancially out of a love for his operas. The married daughter of Liszt, Cosima von Bülow, had Wagner’s illegitimate child, and Wagner was forced to leave Münich by the scandal. King Ludwig arranged for him to move into the Villa Tribschen, where the museum now is, and it was here that Wagner finished Die Meistersinger in 1867.
Wagner only left the idyllic surroundings of Lake Lucerne because it had long been his dream to build his own opera house, and this he was able to realise in the Bayreuth Festspielhaus. The first festival of his music was held there in 1876.

seit Juli 2015 in neuem Glanz. Drei thematische Dauerausstellungen vermitteln dank moderner
Technik das Leben und Werk Wagners und erhalten dabei auch den mystischen Charakter der Villa.
Wir begleiten den Museumsdirektor Dr. Sven Friedrich auf einem Rundgang. Weitere Informationen

Bahnhofbrand Luzern 1971
Der Brand des Bahnhofes Luzern, 5. Februar 1971.

Luzern | Switzerland | Lucerne, Chapel Bridge, Altdorf, William Tell, Mount Rigi,
Lucerne (Luzern in German, Lozärn in Swiss-German) [25] is a beautiful small city in the heartland of Switzerland, across the lake from Altdorf, where legend has itc shot an apple off of his son's head. In addition to being a fine place to visit in and of itself Lucerne is a great base from which to explore famous Swiss sites such as Mount Rigi and the Rütli Meadow.
The Chapel Bridge, The Chapel Bridge, a landmark of Lucerne, is said to be the oldest woodbridge of Europe. The Bridge is made with wood and was built in 14th century as a protection for the city. It's amusing walking over it as you can see about 100 pictures of 12th century city life and Swiss history. Join one of the walking tours going around! Unfortunately the bridge burned down on 18th August 1993. Within a few months it was rebuilt. The tower used as oubliette is still in original condition.

The clock has 'First Strike rights' by law, and so chimes at 1 min before the hour. Unfortunately what little explanatory signage there is on the wall is almost all only in German.

The collection also houses 200 photographs -- previously housed in the Am-Rhyn-Haus -- by David Duncan Douglas, LIFE’s WWII photo correspondent who arrived with his camera uninvited at Picasso’s villa “California”, was welcomed by Picasso and his family, and over the years produced an intimate portrait of the artist’s day-to-day life. Picasso's living room was his studio, and domestic scenes -- a ballet lesson, Picasso drawing with his children, or wrapping himself in the cape and hat of his native Spain -- play out within the backdrop of some of his most famous works. Tribschen -- December 25, 1870
Wagner composed the Siegfried Idyll as a birthday present to his second wife, Cosima, after the birth of their son Siegfried in 1869. It was first performed on Christmas morning, 25 December 1870, by a small ensemble of the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich on the stairs of their villa at Tribschen (today part of Lucerne), Switzerland. Cosima awoke to its opening melody.
