They start the day with a classic breakfast in a traditional pastry shop founded in 1894. They walk the downtown streets passing by major monuments, they visit the naval museum and sail the waters of Guanabara Bay on board of a vessel used during World War II. They have lunch at a typical port restaurant and explore the city center’s popular commercial streets with more than 1,200 shops selling all sorts of merchandise. Night falls and Hylka and Stephanie end the day dancing samba right where Samba was born.

In the heart of the city, Cinelândia, is home to the Municipal Theater and the National Museum of Fine Arts. Closer to the port is the National History Museum. Visit the Maracanã Football Stadium for a taste of the national obsession -- football!
Explore elegant public parks, such as Parque Henrique Lage and Quinta da Boa Vista. Walk the colorful Selarón Steps, created from tiles donated from all over the world.
No wonder they call Rio de Janeiro the Cidade Maravilhosa, the marvelous city.

In #RioDeJaneiro the Brazilian locals pile onto the beautiful beaches and express themselves through artwork, dance, and the ubiquitous Rio de Janeiro partying.
Any Rio de Janeiro #tour must make a stop at Christ the Redeemer, the ubiquitous statue that watches over the city from above the Tijuca National Forest. Take the cable car to the lookout point on Sugarloaf Mountain, the city’s iconic peak, and try not to look down – it’s a long way to the ground!
After a morning spent in nature, your #vacation should continue back in the city. Join the sun worshippers at Copacabana, where you can stake out a patch of beach or float out to sea with the paddleboarders. Shop for souvenirs in Ipanema, or take part in the street dances, festivals, and parades that may spontaneously break out.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Rio de Janeiro, aka just Rio, and São Paulo often called SP
The two largest cities in Brazil. Heck, with a metropolitan area population of 21.3 million people, São Paulo is the largest Portuguese speaking city in the world, the second largest city in the entire Southern Hemisphere and 12th largest in the world overall. It’s actually part of an even bigger São Paulo Macrometropolis, which has about 31.5 million people. Geez. Rio de Janeiro, with a metropolitan area population of 13 million people, is the fourth largest city in the Southern Hemisphere and 37th largest city in the world.
About 437 km, or 272 miles apart, or a five and a half hour drive by car, the Brazilian government recently postponed plans to build a $9 billion high speed rail line connecting the two cities that would reduce the trip to just 80 minutes because it would cost...you know…$9 billion.
Don’t be fooled...even though they seem to be hiding down there in the southeast corner of Brazil, both are megacities that dominate the economy and culture of the entire country. Both are near the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Ok, well Rio is right on the coast, and SP is about an hour from it.
Rio de Janeiro is the capital city of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Well hey what a coincidence because São Paulo is the capital city of the state of São Paulo.
Citizens in Rio are often called Cariocas, while citizens of São Paulo are often called Paulistanos or Paulistanas.
Both cities are located in the rugged area known as the Brazilian Highlands, an area filled with cliffs, large hills, and mountains. Both are near the Serra do Mar, a system of mountain ranges that go along the coast.
Brazil revamps Rio ahead of the Olympics
Rio de Janeiro's historic centre was long considered dangerous and rundown. But the Brazilian city has spent tens of millions of dollars on urban renewal and transportation ahead of the Olympic Games next month. Many see the revamping as a long-overdue re-birth, but others are questioning the use of taxpayers' money.
Al Jazeera’s Adam Raney reports from Rio de Janeiro.

Rio de Janeiro's Muslim community calls for peace ahead of Olympics
They're jokingly called terrorists, but Rio's Muslim community is calling for peace ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics, which has already been threatened with terror attacks.
R.AGE decided to visit the city's only mosque to see how the community celebrates Eid al-Fitr, and to hear their thoughts about terrorism.
