Garden Of Rememberance
The Garden of Rememberance, designed by Daithí P. Hanly, honours the memory of all those who gave their lives for Irish Freedom.
The Children of Lir sculpture is an impressive focal point in the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square. It was designed by Oisin Kelly, cast in the Marinelli Foundry in Florence and unveiled in 1966. It symbolises that people are often changed utterly by significant events (in this case the Easter Rising of 1916). The design is obviously based on the ancient legend of King Lir's children who were changed into swans.
President Eamon de Valera opened the Garden of Remembrance on Easter Monday 1966, the golden jubilee of the 1916 Rising. The Garden, designed by Daithí P. Hanly, honours the memory of all those who gave their lives for Irish Freedom. The floor of the sunken pool displays a mosaic pattern of blue green waves interspersed with ancient weaponry. The spears are shown broken following the Celtic custom of throwing weapons into rivers and lakes as offerings to the gods when hostilities ended.
UK: Pro-Palestine rally slams N.Ireland football friendly with Israel
Dozens of protesters gathered close to the Rise sculpture in west Belfast on Tuesday, in a show of solidarity for Palestinians, calling for the planned Northern Ireland's friendly football match against Israel in Windsor Park to be called off.
A small pro-Israel demo, waving Israeli and Union Jack flags, countered the protest with police heavily monitoring the situation.
Pro-Palestine group BDS Ireland, part of the ‘Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions’ movement, along with Sinn Fein, were among the parties asking for the match to be called off due to the ongoing violence against palestinian protesters and the illegal occupation of Palestinian land.
Over 5,000 people signed a petition calling for the game to be called off.
Whilst the Israeli national team are free to travel and flourish worldwide, the Palestinian national team are blocked from doing so due to disgraceful restrictions placed on citizens in the West Bank and the Israeli created open air prison of Gaza, stated Sinn Fein elected official Sinead Ennis.
Despite the calls, the match went ahead with Northern Ireland emerging victorious over Israel 3:0.

UK: Oxfam Big Heads score a hole in one at G8
Eight Oxfam volunteers dressed as G8 leaders took to the grounds of the Enniskillen Golf Club in Northern Ireland on Tuesday as part of a campaign to end global hunger.
Wearing paper mâché heads and dressed in golfing garb, the volunteers drove around the course in golf carts while impersonating the likes of Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Francois Hollande, and Prime Minister David Cameron.
The stunt was an attempt to put ending global hunger at the top of the G8's agenda.
The Oxfam charity have been staging various events over the past week, with the Big Heads also posing as chefs and sailing on a boat. The charity are hoping the events will encourage world leaders to fight hunger through tackling land grabs and tax dodging in developing countries. During the two days of the G8 summit, some $2.2 billion (€1.64 billion) in illicit flows will have been sucked out of developing countries into tax havens, according to Oxfam. This amount could help 2.5 million farmers in Indonesia provide food for themselves and their families.
This year's G8 summit, which is now in its final day, is taking place in the Lough Erne golf resort, also in Enniskillen.

Ghost of ~Waterstone Manor Dorset
Waterston Manor, Puddletown, Dorset is a manor house with 17th century origins, that was extensively rebuilt after a fire in 1863 and remodelled in 1911. The manor was the inspiration for Weatherbury Farm in Thomas Hardy's novel, Far from the Madding Crowd. It is a Grade I listed building.
There are a number of stories of biographers being haunted by their
subjects after they became immersed in the minutiae of that person’s life.
CONSTANTINE FITZGIBBON (1919- 83), the American-born writer who
became famous for his novels, including When The Kissing Had To Stop (1961),
also wrote several biographies. The most critically acclaimed was Life of Dylan
Thomas (1965) which produced a moment Fitzgibbon recalled thereafter
as a .. .
THE GHOST OVER MY SHOULDER
For some years I owned and lived in a house called Waterston Manor, in Dorset.
It is a most handsome house, of immense antiquity but no particular period. An
Elizabethan thug called Lord Thomas Howard built a fine,Renaissance, carved stone western front in 1586. Another front is Jacobean. The rest is principally Victorian for the house was burned out - though not burned down - on Christmas
night, 1862. Only a well-panelled corner room, which I used as my study, remained from the old interior. And of course the house was said to be haunted, though neither I nor any member of my family ever saw the ghost of the eighteenth- century girl who is said to have jumped to her death from an upper window. For me it was a beautiful house, and not at all a spooky one: save for two incidents.
The first occurred on Christmas night, 1962. I had installed oil-fired central heating, and the large house was well warmed. But as I, my wife and the children ate our simple evening meal - we had gorged ourselves at lunchtime - I noticed that the dining room was rapidly growing cold. The radiators, I found, were chilly. I therefore fetched a torch and went to the small cellar under the house where the heating mechanism was. I found that the floor was deep in oil, and the furnace red hot. I waded through hot oil to the main switch, and turned it off. I then rang the heating engineer in Blandford, who was miraculously at home, and who came at once. He told me that had I not acted as I had done, in a matter of minutes the house would have burned. A safety device had failed, inexplicably, to function. This was one hundred years to the day, perhaps
almost to the minute, since old Waterston had burned. Whoever shall own that beautiful house in the year 2062 had better watch out, on Christmas night.
Thomas Hardy knew the house well, both inside and out, in the years before the fire when he was a very young man. It is Bathsheba Everdene’s house in Far from the Madding Crowd. Before 1 owned it, it was lived in and farmed by a tenant of Lord Ilchester’s named Genge. There were daughters and young Hardy was very fond of girls. He was again living, a mere mile or so away, and may well have fallen for one of them Was she perhaps the Lizbie Browne of his famous, beautiful poem, the girl to whom the shy young poet never dared declare his love?
Dear Lizbie Browne . . . sweet Lizbie
Browne . . . was she perhaps a Miss
Genge? For in late 1964 I was finishing my Life of Dylan Thomas. One stormy winter’s night I telephoned John Betjeman to ask him about poets’ incomes in the 1930s. Betjeman recalled how beautifully Dylan had once read To Lizbie Browne when
they were both dining with the A.J.P. Taylors in Oxford. This reminded me of Dylan reading that same poem, in my house in Chelsea, in 1944. Later that night I reread the poem to myself in my darkly panelled workroom. The fire was burning low, the only light that of my desk lamp.
And then this happened. I was quite certain that somebody was standing behind my left shoulder, and that this person was also reading the poem in the open book before me. Furthermore I had a physical sensation - which I had read about but never experienced before or since: my hair was slowly rising from my
scalp. It was, as they say, standing on end.
How long this sensation, which was terrifying, lasted I do not know. A fraction of a second? Longer? I forced myself to turn my head. This required courage. And there was no one there, and my hair settled, and I went and poured a nightcap. Which ghost had been reading, over my shoulder, that lovely poem written so long ago? Dylan Thomas? Thomas Hardy? I prefer to think that it was Lizbie Browne, sweet Lizbie Browne, herself.

Clough roundabout, 'Way to the Fair' Sculpture Darren Sutton
I do not usually like or appreciate most sculpture but this example sitting in the middle of Clough roundabout makes me smile every time I approach it. I think it is so expressive of cow and farmer interaction in real life. In this stainless steel produced sculpture called 'Way to the Fair', the 'ole cow seems to know that it is being sold off and it is clearly not happy.
Sculpture (John) Darren Sutton was born in Dungannon, Co Tyrone in 1972. Since graduating from Stafford College, England, he has spent 16 years producing public art in Scotland, England, Portugal and latterly Ireland. These works include sculptures, murals and other commissioned works of art.
His sculptured work is cast in specialist cement as well as resin, aluminum and bronze. Works are also created using brick, steel and wood.
In 2003 he was employed by the world famous Royal Worcester Porcelain. There he assisted members of the public in designing, decorating and producing porcelain products within the complex.
In 2006 Darren returned home to Dungannon where he was commissioned to work on Re-imaging projects in Belfast and Dungannon. Darren was also commissioned to produce major sculptures in Banbridge, County Down.
In 2010 he began work in Belfast for HBO film and television company. There he produced a number of panels and three-dimensional works for a new TV series.
Darren has had the opportunity to refine and enhance his unique talent by working on numerous public artworks in England for over 15 years, but his most recent works have been created back home in Northern Ireland. In the past five years his works have been commissioned by various local council authorities.
Solitude Park in Banbridge holds the stunning 21ft, stainless steel “Flax Flowers” sculpture. Not only is this work unique in size and stature, it brings a positive, social ambience to the onlooker and an eye-catching focal point to the park.
At the opposite end of Banbridge town, Darren was commissioned to produce the “Family Entering the Workhouse” piece. This bronze sculpture is a life-size work depicting a family being separated at the gate of the workhouse in days gone by. Contrary to the subject matter this sculpture brings an uplifting, tangible presence to the area, and is situated on an elevated site where the original workhouse stood.
