From Wikioedia
The Virgin River Gorge, located between St. George, Utah, and Littlefield, Arizona, is a long canyon that has been carved out by the Virgin River in northwest Arizona.[1] The Virgin River rises on the Colorado Plateau and created the topography of both Zion National Park and the Virgin River Gorge. The Gorge connects the southwestern rim of the Colorado Plateau and the northeastern edge of the Mojave Desert.
Interstate 15 runs through the canyon and crosses the Virgin River several times. The Virgin River Gorge section of Interstate 15 is one of the most expensive parts of interstate highway ever constructed.[2][3] Due to the winding of the interstate, the canyon is also noted for its tricky driving conditions.
The climate of the canyon is typical of the Mojave Desert with hot summers and mild winters. Flora and fauna in the canyon are also typical of the Mojave. The canyon is popular among rock climbers, hikers, and campers.
Interstate 15 (I-15) is an Interstate Highway, running from San Diego, California, United States, to the Canadian border, through Mohave County in northwest Arizona. Despite being isolated from the rest of Arizona, in the remote Arizona Strip, and short in length at 29.39 miles (47.30 km), it remains notable for its scenic passage through the Virgin River Gorge. The highway heads in a northeasterly direction from the Nevada border northeast of Mesquite, Nevada, to the Utah border southwest of St. George, Utah.
The south portion of I-15's route was built close to the alignment of the old U.S. Route 91 (US 91), but the northern section, through the Virgin River Gorge, was built along roadless terrain. The southern section of the highway was complete and open in the early 1960s, but the gorge section was inaccessible until 1973. When it opened, the Virgin River Gorge passage was the most expensive section of rural Interstate per mile.
The highway is signed and designated the Veterans Memorial Highway,[3] The highway is also a part of the CANAMEX Corridor, a trade corridor in North America linking Edmonton, Alberta in Canada and Mexico City.[6]
Beyond exit 9, I-15 enters the Virgin River Gorge, first passing through The Narrows. Here, the gorge features limestone cliffs that are as high as 500 feet (150 m) above the highway. Several pulloffs allow access to these cliffs.[8] Within the canyon, through which it ascends northbound and descends southbound, five bridges cross the river.[9] The highway generally follows the winding course of the river, but several rock cuts bypass bends.[7]
The canyon opens up slightly at the Cedar Pocket interchange (exit 18), allowing for a rest area. This rest area was turned over to the federal Bureau of Land Management in 2002 which maintains the nearby Virgin River Gorge Recreation Area.[10] The rest area was demolished in 2009. I-15 continues to parallel the Virgin River, but begins to deviate more.[7] Trees here include tamarix, ash, cottonwoods, willows and Joshua trees. Wildflowers such as globemallow, marigold, and sand verbena dot the route in springtime.[8] At mile 22.5, the highway crosses the Virgin River for the final time, continuing east along the smaller Black Rock Gulch before then turning slightly northeast into a flatter area.
The weigh station/port of entry are now combined into a joint Arizona/Utah facility just north of the state line staffed by the Arizona Department of Transportation (DOT) Motor Vehicle Division and Utah DOT Motor Carrier Division. I-15 continues on into Utah providing access to St. George as well as Salt Lake City.[7]
The Old Spanish Trail from Southern California had two routes through northwestern Arizona, splitting at Littlefield; one went north towards central Utah, and the other went northeast through the Virgin River Gorge, straddling the state line to the Four Corners area.[11] When the Arrowhead Trail was marked in the 1920s, and U.S. Route 91 in 1926, automobile travelers between Nevada and Utah followed the northerly routing, turning east in Utah to reach St. George.[12]
When the Interstates were planned, federal authorities decided to save 12 miles (19 km) over US 91 and pass through the Virgin River Gorge to take advantage of its scenery and lower grades for trucks.[13][14] Construction was completed first, in the early 1960s, on the portion between Nevada and the gorge. The bridges over Big Bend Wash were completed in 1962. The bridge over the Virgin River near Littlefield was completed by 1964.
Legendary Road Trip from Las Vegas
00:00:18 to skip Intro
We reached Las Vegas in the late afternoon and spent some time at the Neon Museum (must-visit attraction). In the next morning we made our way to the Grand Canyon where we had spectacular views from the Skywalk. On the way back we stopped by at the Hoover Dam and then continued our journey to Las Vegas. In the evening we watch Michael Jackson: One by Cirque du Soleil at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. After a short night we left Las Vegas on the Extraterrestrial Highway, stopped at the Black Mailbox, drove until Area 51 (until the barricades) and had lunch at the alien-themed restaurant The Little A'Le'Inn. Leaving the Aliens behind, we drove through the desert until we reach our Accommodation at Death Valley. We went to the Badwater Basin, Zabriskie Point and Dante's View before driving to Palm Springs (California).

Background Information: Las Vegas, officially the City of Las Vegas and often known simply as Vegas, is the 28th-most populated city in the United States, the most populated city in the state of Nevada, and the county seat of Clark County. Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a horseshoe-shaped cantilever bridge with a glass walkway in Arizona near the Colorado River on the edge of a side canyon in the Grand Canyon West area of the main canyon. The United States Air Force facility commonly known as Area 51 is a highly classified remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base, within the Nevada Test and Training Range. The top-secret Area 51 government base is near SR 375, and many travelers have reported UFO observations and other strange alien activity along this road. Such stories prompted the state to officially designate the route as the Extraterrestrial Highway in 1996. The small town of Rachel, located near the midpoint of the highway, caters to tourists, geocachers, and UFO seekers with alien-themed businesses. Although the area receives some tourism due to alleged extraterrestrial activity, SR 375 remains a lightly traveled route. On a deserted stretch of road known as the “Extraterrestrial Highway” between Alamo and Rachel, Nevada, there is a lone mailbox with the names of two recipients. A larger box is labeled with the unassuming name of “Steve Medlin”; a smaller box is simply marked “Alien. Death Valley is a desert valley located in Eastern California, in the northern Mojave Desert bordering the Great Basin Desert. It is one of the hottest places in the world at the height of summertime along with deserts in the Middle East. Rachel is over 100 miles (160 km) north of Las Vegas in the Great Basin Desert, along Nevada Highway 375 (the Extraterrestrial Highway). The tiny town receives a substantial number of visitors and tourists, catered to by a small tourist shop, a 12-room motel, and an alien-themed restaurant and bar, the Little A'Le'Inn. Badwater Basin is an endorheic basin in Death Valley National Park, Death Valley, Inyo County, California, noted as the lowest point in North America, with a depth of 282 ft (86 m) below sea level.

2019.03.25 Hoover Dam
Today we drove from Las Vegas to see Hoover Dam. We left early in the morning, and I’m glad we did because it was not crowded there at all. We knew in advance that we would not be able to walk across the dam with the dogs. However, when we got there, we learned that dogs were not allowed in the large parking garage on the Nevada side of the damn. We had to drive across the dam to the Arizona side to an outdoor parking lot about 2 tenths of a mile from the Arizona side edge of the dam. Louie stayed with the dogs while I walked across the dam and got pictures.
The Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge outside Boulder City, also known as the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge, was the first concrete-steel composite arch bridge built in the United States and includes the longest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere. Opened on October 19, 2010, the bridge provides a crossing of the Colorado River for U.S. Route 93, linking the states of Nevada and Arizona 1,600 feet downstream from the Hoover Dam. The bridge is the highest in the nation, at 840 feet above the Colorado River.
Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed over a 5-year period in the 1930’s during the Great Depression. The dam created Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the US by volume - when it is full. At the end of January, the lake was at 1,086 feet of surface elevation above sea level. If it drops to 1,050 feet, the lake can no longer generate hydroelectricity. At 895 feet, it can’t provide water. The lake overflowed into the spillway only once in its history – in 1983, and its level has steadily declined since 2000.

Chasing UFO's on the River Bob Talks About His Life After Seeing the Object May 15, 2009
Chief Investigative Reporter George Knapp and Photojournalist Matt Adams
One year ago, residents in the tri-state area of Nevada, Arizona, and California saw something weird blaze out of the sky and crash on the banks of the Colorado River, south of Needles.
Reports about the needles UFO were sent all over the world and brought a lot of visitors, including men-in-black types to that region. Residents have had a year to think about the object that crashed and to ponder some new, similar sightings from the past few months.
A trio of yapping dogs, excited about something outside their Bullhead City home is what caused Tutu Martin and her husband Paul to awaken just after 3 a.m. on May 14, 2009. The whole bedroom lit up, like they had lights on it, so I pushed the blinds back and looked, said Tutu.
The glowing object blazed across the sky in a southwest direction and appeared to slow down, then speed up. Minutes later, Martin says, she saw and heard a formation of helicopters as they sped south past the Laughlin skyline. They were definitely following the river heading south. About another 20 minutes or so, they were coming back, she said.
It was bright -- bright enough that it illuminated the ground, said former police chief Frank Costigan.
A few miles away, a cantankerous cat caused Frank Costigan to awaken. He also got a good look at the streaking object, saw it slow down, then speed up, then zip below the horizon. I expected to hear a boom or siren or something, he said.
Down on the Colorado, a fisherman we call Bob on the River had the best view of all. The oblong object with a turquoise hue lit up the water and then smashed into the sandy bank 100 yards away. It didn't look like a meteor. I've seen meteors before. It looked like a plane crashing, he said.
Within minutes, Bob says, the air was buzzing with helicopters, and then a large sky crane somehow attached the object, picked it up, and carried it away.
In Bullhead City, Brad Allen watched the aerial procession with his son. I looked thru the binoculars and below one of them was a green object. It was glowing a faint green, he said.
Tutu Martin saw the same procession. An hour or so later, she says the Laughlin Airport, located just below her home, was invaded by several 737's which were identical to the famed Janet planes used to transport workers from Las Vegas to the Area 51 military base. It was white with a red stripe, she said.
In the days that followed, residents in and around Needles reported encounters with mysterious men-in-black types in odd unmarked vehicles with government plates.
Radio station owner Dave Hayes says the vehicles were similar to, but not exactly like, a government convoy the I-Team ran across. The group the I-Team stumbled upon turned out to be a team from the agency which transports nuclear weapons.
In the year since the needles UFO incident, plenty has happened. Hayes' station, KTOX, which is also where Costigan works, has become an unofficial clearinghouse for UFO reports.
Most are explainable or not believable, he says, but Costigan thinks there's no question the object that crashed near Houseboat Bob was the real deal, though every military unit within 200 miles denies knowing anything about it.
Although the story has raised the public profile of the area and has drawn curious tourists, sort of like Roswell on the River, Costigan says the locals think it's a serious matter, even if it was a military test of some sort, which is the prevailing view.
I think it was military or the military was tailing it or knew it was coming down. But my gripe, why didn't we get warning we were in danger of something falling out of the sky? We want answers, he said.
Residents of Lake Havasu would also like answers about what's been flying over their heads in recent months. In March and again in April, eyewitnesses saw a large triangle, some say boomerang, cruising over the lake in the wee hours. The craft was flanked or followed by warplanes. The reports are similar to huge triangles seen all over the world in recent years.
A Las Vegas think tank known as NIDS found an apparent correlation between the sightings and military facilities, but the Pentagon denies having anything this big in operation.
Costigan says the Havasu sightings ring true to him. It was seen up and down the whole West Coast. I've got several descriptions, but always with a military presence, he said.

City Walks: Las Vegas, Nevada virtual treadmill walking tour
City Walks: Las Vegas, Nevada virtual treadmill walking tour
We passed through Las Vegas, Nevada on our T-day roadtrip and I was able to squeeze in a morning walk along the north end of the Las Vegas strip starting at Circus Circus and making my way down to the New York, New York hotel and casino. There was very little party activity at 8am the Tuesday before Thanksgiving but there were a surprising number of joggers. It was a beautiful morning for a walking tour of the Las Vegas strip though and I enjoyed it. I even earned a blister.
Las Vegas is fascinating for many reasons. Here's some info from WikiPedia:
The Las Vegas Strip is a stretch of South Las Vegas Boulevard in Clark County, Nevada that is known for its concentration of resort hotels and casinos. The Strip is approximately 4.2 miles (6.8 km) in length, located immediately south of the Las Vegas city limits in the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester. However, the Strip is often referred to as being in Las Vegas.
Many of the largest hotel, casino, and resort properties in the world are located on the Strip. The boulevard's cityscape is highlighted by its use of contemporary architecture, lights, and a wide variety of attractions. Its hotels, casinos, restaurants, residential high-rises, entertainment offerings, and skyline have established the Strip as one of the most popular and iconic tourist destinations in the world. Most of the Strip has also been designated as an All-American Road and is considered a scenic route at night.
Las Vegas (Spanish for The Meadows), officially the City of Las Vegas and often known simply as Vegas, is the 28th-most populated city in the United States, the most populated city in the state of Nevada, and the county seat of Clark County. The city anchors the Las Vegas Valley metropolitan area and is the largest city within the greater Mojave Desert. Las Vegas is an internationally renowned major resort city, known primarily for its gambling, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, and nightlife. The Las Vegas Valley as a whole serves as the leading financial, commercial, and cultural center for Nevada.
The city bills itself as The Entertainment Capital of the World, and is famous for its mega casino–hotels and associated activities. It is a top three destination in the United States for business conventions and a global leader in the hospitality industry, claiming more AAA Five Diamond hotels than any other city in the world. Today, Las Vegas annually ranks as one of the world's most visited tourist destinations. The city's tolerance for numerous forms of adult entertainment earned it the title of Sin City, and has made Las Vegas a popular setting for literature, films, television programs, and music videos.
Las Vegas was settled in 1905 and officially incorporated in 1911. At the close of the 20th century, it was the most populated American city founded within that century (a similar distinction earned by Chicago in the 1800s). Population growth has accelerated since the 1960s, and between 1990 and 2000 the population nearly doubled, increasing by 85.2%. Rapid growth has continued into the 21st century, and according to a 2018 estimate, the population is 648,224[13] with a regional population of 2,227,053.
Las Vegas is often used to describe areas beyond official city limits—especially the areas on and near the Las Vegas Strip, which is actually located within the unincorporated communities of Paradise and Winchester.
