Five weires walk River Don part 2, Sheffield, UK
The 8 km long Five Weirs Walk runs alongside the River Don in Sheffield, England. From Lady's Bridge in Sheffield City Centre, it heads downstream, northeast, over the Cobweb Bridge, through Attercliffe to Meadowhall.

As the name of the walk suggests, it passes five weirs. It is now possible to continue the walk along the Don, under the Tinsley Viaduct, to Rotherham. As of 2010, the section of the walk between Sheffield and Meadowhall has been linked with the parallel Sheffield and Tinsley Canal towpath as an 8 mile circular walk known as The Blue Loop.

The Five Weirs Walk Trust Ltd is a registered charity set up in 1986. Its primary aim is to open up the 7.5km of River Don to public access through Sheffield's East End.
The Trust's activities are carried out by the Directors supported by a network of volunteers, many of whom have registered as Friends of the Trust in order to be included in information mailings etc.
Activities include Clean Ups, Educational Talks, Guided Walks and to provide assistance for those with an interest in the walk for educational purposes etc. Details of planned activities will be posted on this website.

Sheffield is a city in the English county of South Yorkshire. In the city centre, the Millennium Gallery shows metalwork and art from Sheffield and around the world. It adjoins the Winter Garden, a large temperate glasshouse filled with plants. Kelham Island Museum covers the city’s industrial heritage. Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, its name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. With some of its southern suburbs annexed from Derbyshire, the city has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base. The population of the City of Sheffield is 582,506 (mid-2018 est.)[2] and it is one of the eight largest regional English cities that make up the Core Cities Group.[3] Sheffield is the third-largest English district by population. The metropolitan population of Sheffield is 1,569,000.[1]
The city is in the eastern foothills of the Pennines, and the valleys of the River Don and its four tributaries, the Loxley, the Porter Brook, the Rivelin and the Sheaf. Sixty-one per cent of Sheffield's entire area is green space, and a third of the city lies within the Peak District national park.[4] There are more than 250 parks, woodlands and gardens in the city,[4] which is estimated to contain around 4.5 million trees.[5]
Sheffield played a crucial role in the Industrial Revolution, with many significant inventions and technologies developed in the city. In the 19th century, the city saw a huge expansion of its traditional cutlery trade, when stainless steel and crucible steel were developed locally, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population. Sheffield received its municipal charter in 1843, becoming the City of Sheffield in 1893. International competition in iron and steel caused a decline in these industries in the 1970s and 1980s, coinciding with the collapse of coal mining in the area.
The 21st century has seen extensive redevelopment in Sheffield, along with other British cities. Sheffield's gross value added (GVA) has increased by 60% since 1997, standing at £9.2 billion in 2007. The economy has experienced steady growth averaging around 5% annually, greater than that of the broader region of Yorkshire and the Humber.[6]

Various shots of the city of Sheffield, including a tram or trolley bus moving through the countryside around the city, pan across the rooftops of Sheffield, the busy High Street and Fargate, the Town Hall, freight being pulled on the railways.
Several shots at a steel foundry show molten steel being moulded into ingots, to be used for tramway points and crossings. Large sheets of stainless steel are moved about in a factory. Men work on an electrical furnace for making steel that will be sent to Russia. Women in overalls work on a machine that makes the magnets for 'moving coil loud speakers'.
We see numerous men and women working on Sheffield Plate silver items. A man forges cutlery in a factory; a case is opened to show a whole set of Sheffield cutlery. Scissors are forged and polished. A huge circular saw is hammered flat. L/Ss of an aeroplane flying through the air, and a motor car zooming along Daytona Beach (?), United States of America - could be one of the Bluebirds? Alderman Wilson says from this city go forth those wonderful steels which have enabled the world's speed records in air, on water and land, to be won by Britain.

Pictures from the Sheffield Flood (25/06/2007), from outside the Sheffield Wednesday (SWFC) ground on Penistone Road North. DeeJayOne presents a Sheffield Guide short video. The River Don was some 10-or-so foot higher than normal and was filtering out underneath the SWFC south stand, in turn flooding onto the road, which then immersed abandoned cars. Various angles of the flooding on that road at it's worst on the day.

On 25 June, Sheffield suffered extensive damage as the River Don over topped its banks causing widespread flooding in the Don Valley area of the city. A 13-year-old boy was swept away by the swollen River Sheaf, a 68-year old man died after attempting to cross a flooded road in Sheffield city centre, and several cattle were washed away, found up to 3.5 miles (5.6 km) across fields in some areas of cultivated land. The Meadowhall shopping centre was closed due to flooding with some shops remaining closed downstairs until late September and Sheffield Wednesday's ground Hillsborough was under 6 feet (1.83 m) of water. A number of people were rescued by RAF helicopters from buildings in the Brightside area, whilst in the Millhouses Park area to the southwest of the city the River Sheaf overtopped its banks causing widespread damage. There was also widespread flooding in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham with much of these towns cut off.
By 26 June, the waters in some parts of Sheffield and the surrounding area receded, and over 700 villagers from Catcliffe, near Rotherham's Ulley reservoir were evacuated after cracks appeared in the dam. Emergency services from across England pumped millions of gallons of water from the reservoir to ease the pressure on the damaged dam, and the nearby M1 Motorway was closed between junctions 32 and 36 as a precaution.
On 27 June, the Army moved into the Doncaster area after the River Don overtopped its banks and threatened the area around what was Thorpe Marsh Power Station. A man was incorrectly reported missing near the village of Adwick le Street near Doncaster.
About the floods: June was one of the wettest months on record in Britain. Average rainfall across the country was 5.5 inches (140 mm); more than double the June average. Some areas received a month's worth of precipitation in 24 hours. It was Britain's wettest May--July since records began in 1776. July had unusually unsettled weather and above-average rainfall through the month, peaking on 20 July as an active frontal system dumped more than 4.7 inches (120 mm) of rain in southern England.
Civil and military authorities described the June and July rescue efforts as the biggest in peacetime Britain. The Environment Agency described the July floods as critical and expected them to exceed the 1947 benchmark.
