Places to see in ( Sacramento - USA )
Places to see in ( Sacramento - USA )
Sacramento, capital of the U.S. state of California, lies at the confluence of the Sacramento River and American River. The district of Old Sacramento harkens back to the city’s Gold Rush era, with wooden sidewalks and wagon rides. One of several museums in Old Sacramento, the California State Railroad Museum depicts the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, one of the country’s earliest technological feats.
Sacramento is the oldest incorporated city in California, settled between the confluences of the Sacramento and American rivers. It was founded in 1849 and there are many reminders of the history of the city including Sutter's Fort, Old Sacramento, and remnants of the original ground level of Sacramento. It experienced explosive growth when gold was discovered in 1848 in nearby Coloma, and the gold rush that followed was the largest human migration in history. Currently it has a population of 490,000 in the city and over two million in the metropolitan area.
The pace of life is somewhat slower than in other large Californian cities, and the people are generally warm and friendly. The city is generally viewed as being affordable for being a large California city. Once a thriving riverfront pioneer town, Old Sacramento now primarily exists as living historic district. The boardwalk style sidewalks and horse-drawn stagecoaches give this small section of town a unique flavor. Old Sacramento contains several museums, restaurants, and the usual assortment of souvenir shops all within walking distance of each other. Best of all, it's a five minute walk from the Amtrak station. It's best visited in late afternoon and early evening. Parking can be scarce, so be sure to utilize the reasonably priced parking structures in the K Street Mall. There's a nice, short, safe walkway between K Street Mall and Old Sacramento.
Sacramento is fairly easy to navigate due to the numbered and lettered streets, especially in the central district which is laid out in a grid. Numbered streets run north and south while lettered streets run east and west. South of the city center (bounded by Broadway, Front Street, and Alhambra Boulevard), the streets are named Avenue when the lettered streets run out.

No-Camping Ordinance Protest @ Sacramento City Hall
Students at Folsom Lake College will be interacting with homeless activists and advocates to discuss Sacramento's ordinance to ban camping when there are not sufficient shelter spaces or other support services for folks experiencing homelessness. Protests began in early December and the afternoon of Jan. 26th is set to be a specific call to action to oppose this ban and the criminalization of homelessness and to urge Sacramento to provide the kinds of shelter and services our community needs.
Although the posted time is 10:30, the planned time is for 11. The interaction time will be anywhere from 30-45 minutes. We will see what happens!

Antelope, California
Antelope is a census-designated place in Sacramento County, California, United States located approximately 15 miles northeast of downtown Sacramento and 5 miles southwest of Roseville. The population was 45,770 at the 2010 census.
The 2010 United States Census] reported that Antelope had a population of 45,770. The population density was 6,694.2 people per square mile.
In the late 1800s, Antelope was the only significant settlement in the Center Township, an area bounded on the North by the Placer county line, on the East by what is now Sunrise Blvd., on the South by the American River, and on the West by the line along 20th St in Rio Linda south to Ethan Way in the Arden-Arcade area. The population of the entire township in 1880 was about 400 people. Many of the railroad workers made their homes here and eventually stayed permanently. Gradually, workers left the area and Antelope became just another small community with little business.

US Homeless Count Rises, Pushed by West Coast
(6 Dec 2017) FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS... THE HOMELESS POPULATION IN THE COUNTRY HAS INCREASED.
A NEW REPORT BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT SAYS A BIG FACTOR IS THE SURGING NUMBER OF HOMELESS PEOPLE IN SEVERAL WEST COAST CITIES, INCLUDING LOS ANGELES, SEATTLE, SAN DIEGO AND PORTLAND.
SOUNDBITE (English) Ben Carson, HUD Secretary
These happen to be places where rents are going up much faster than incomes and hence we're seeing progressively more in those kinds of areas.
THE GOVERNMENT SAYS THE NATIONAL HOMELESS COUNT INCREASED FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2010 TO NEARLY 554,000.
THE HOMELESS COUNT IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA ALONE WENT UP TO ABOUT 55,000, a jump of MORE THAN 13,000 PEOPLE FROM 2016.
SOUNDBITE (English) Theodore Neubauer, 78, homeless:
You see tents all over, you see tents at McArthur Park. The number of tents you see them expanding - and downtown is just a mess.
THE WEST COAST NUMBERS ARE A CONTRAST TO MOST OF THE COUNTRY, WHERE THE HOMELESS COUNTS HAVE CONTINUED TO DECLINE.
EXCLUDING LOS ANGELES _ THE EPICENTER OF THE CRISIS _ HUD SAYS TOTAL HOMELESSNESS NATIONWIDE WOULD HAVE BEEN DOWN BY ABOUT 1.5 PERCENT FROM LAST YEAR.
SOUNDBITE (English) Thurman Butler Jr., Homeless man
They need to find somebody that understands this problem and give him some power and position and financing to do something about it.
MAYOR ERIC GARCETTI SAYS INSUFFICIENT FEDERAL FUNDING FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND PROGRAMS ARE PART OF THE REASON FOR THE CITY'S CRISIS.
VOTERS IN THE CITY AND LOS ANGELES COUNTY HAVE PASSED BALLOT MEASURES TO RAISE AN EXPECTED $4.7 BILLION OVER THE NEXT DECADE TO PAY FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND SERVICES.
SOUNDBITE (English) Ben Carson, HUD Secretary
The government can't solve the problem. There's a lot more money in the private sector than their is in the government. What the government has to do is help coordinate the efforts.
THE NUMBERS RELEASED ARE EXPECTED TO BE UNDERCOUNTS, BUT EVEN WITHOUT THE REPORT, MANY ON THE STREETS OF LOS ANGELES CAN ATTEST TO THE INCREASING NUMBERS.
SOUNDBITE (English) Theodore Neubauer, 78, homeless:
You can't walk down the street. The tents are to the edge and the gutter is filled with uneaten food.
THOUGH A TOP POLICY PRIORITY IN LOS ANGELES, THE ISSUE OF HOMELESSNESS CONTINUES TO BE A MOUNTING PROBLEM FOR LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL OFFICIALS.
KRYSTA FAURIA, ASSOCIATED PRESS, LOS ANGELES

OLD SACRAMENTO, California
Old Sacramento, California
These 28 acres on the Sacramento’s historic waterfront were the site of both tragedy — fire and flood — and triumph — the raising of the streets, the founding of the Transcontinental Railroad, the terminus of the Pony Express, and the home of California’s first thriving business district, fueled by gold, agriculture and the river.
Due to past and current efforts by the State of California, private and public museums, individuals, business, the City and County of Sacramento, the Historic Old Sacramento Foundations, scores of volunteers, and many others, Old Sacramento Waterfront lives on as thriving shopping and entertainment district as well as a global tourist destination.
