Get kids out in nature!!!! - Robert Bateman, Canada's top artist
Robert Bateman, OC, OBC (born 24 May 1930) is a Canadian naturalist and painter, born in Toronto, Ontario.
Bateman was always interested in art, but he never intended on making a living from it. He was fascinated by the natural world in his childhood; he recorded the sightings of all of the birds in the area of his house in Toronto.[2] He found inspiration from the Group of Seven; he was also interested in making abstract paintings of nature.[3] It wasn't until the mid 1960's that he changed to his present style, realism.[2] In 1954, he graduated with a degree in geography from Victoria College in the University of Toronto. Afterwards, he attended Ontario College of Education. Although the stage was set for an expert wildlife artist, Bateman moved on to be a high school art/geography teacher.[1] However, he still painted in his free time. It wasn't until the 1970s and 1980s that his work started to receive major recognition. Robert Bateman's show in 1987, at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, drew a large crowd for a living artist.[citation needed]
Bateman also has approximately six books devoted solely to his paintings.[1] Bateman's decision in 1977 to produce reproductions of his paintings through Mill Pond Press has been criticized by some who feel that the reproductions are overpriced posters that cheapen the legitimate art market.[2] The reproductions are popular items, being sold in print galleries across Canada and more internationally.
Today, Robert Bateman lives in Saltspring Island in British Columbia with his second wife [4] Birgit Freybe Bateman.[2] Robert Bateman Secondary School in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Robert Bateman High School in Burlington, Ontario, and Robert Bateman Elementary School, Ottawa, Ontario are named after him.
In 2000, Bateman began the Get to Know program in British Columbia to educate young people about nature and to inspire youth to connect to the natural world.[5][6]
In 2005 Bateman volunteered for an assessment of chemicals present in his body that had a proven negative health effect. The assessment was sponsored by the organization Environmental Defence.[7]
In 2007, Robert Bateman and Birgit Freybe Bateman gifted Royal Roads University[1] with original art, giclées, photographs, sketch books and artifacts -- valued at over $11 million. Royal Roads is currently fundraising to build the Robert Bateman Centre. The Robert Bateman Centre aims to be an education centre with a range of accessible and relevant programming. The Centre will be situated in Hatley Park National Historic Site and will showcase green building technology.

Not everyone has the gift of vision. It is one of those attributes that comes from true artistry and there have been many in the past who had ideas and visions of what they wanted to accomplish and some have become well know names like Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles and Henry Greene, Gustav Stickely, Thomas Molesworth, George Nakashima, Harvey Ellis and many many more.
Today, we have even more exceptional woodworkers with a flare for new and innovative ideas and once in a while we get a chance to see some of their creations and modifications all in one place. Such was the that at the recent One Tree Exhibit hosted by the Robert Bateman Centre in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and in association with Live Edge Design. Robert Bateman of course is know world wide for is exceptional paintings, so who better to show of the works of fellow artist.
The whole concept of the One Tree Exhibit was based on the concept that all the artists would use the one from the same tree. In this case, a big old Broadleaf Maple that had died some time ago which left portions of it spalted, some figured ...
Woodworking artists who wanted to participate in this event paid a specific entry fee, then were allowed to purchase what wood they wanted from the tree. Some chose wood from the outer sides of the tree, some from the middle, some spalted or figured and some normal wood and all of it was fashioned into the vision of what these artists and woodworkers planned.

Robert Bateman Centre Visualization - Chapter 3 - A Sense Of Place
Tasked with fundraising for the construction of the Robert Bateman Centre at Royal Roads University campus, The Royal Roads Foundation's goal is to spread the word about this exciting new project.
To this purpose, The Bateman Centre Visualization Prototype is designed to allow audiences to freely explore the three main messages of the campaign:
1. The Living Building - the architectural and sustainable features of the building itself,
2. The Experience - the numerous and varied experiences it will offer to visitors and finally,
3. A Sense of Place - why the Royal Roads Campus is the ideal home for a building as unique and forward-looking as the Robert Bateman Centre.
Although it is still in development, the prototype demonstrates much of the potential of the completed visualization.
