Twenty-five percent of the residents of Rio de Janeiro live in informal communities called favelas. Not fully slums but not fully integrated into the city either, these favelas are home to both horrific gang violence and some of the most creative and resourceful people in Rio.

Brazil / Brasil / Brésil - Favela Rocinha - Rio de Janeiro: The Biggest Favela in Brazil (2008)
Petit souvenir de voyage... Septembre 2008:
The final 4K footage of my drone flights in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) with my DJI Mavic Pro; project finished and uploaded on 2018-12-15 - enjoy! :-)
Media data: This drone video (3:03min playtime) is an extraction of my 21.1GB Rio de Janeiro 4K Drone Video Footage. Footage on Sale. For inquiries, contact me via E-Mail, my Blog, Facebook or Instagram Page.
Rio de Janeiro Drone Flight: Rocinha is the largest favela in Brazil, located in Rio de Janeiros South Zone between the districts of São Conrado and Gávea. Rocinha is built on a steep hillside overlooking Rio de Janeiro, and is located about one kilometre from a nearby beach. Most of the favela is on a very steep hill, with many trees surrounding it. Almost 70,000 (census 2010) people live in Rocinha, making it the most populous favela in Brazil. Although Rocinha is officially classified as a neighbourhood, many still refer to it as a favela. It developed from a shanty town into an urbanized slum. Today, almost all the houses in Rocinha are made from concrete and brick. Some buildings are three and four stories tall and almost all houses have basic sanitation, plumbing and electricity. Compared to simple shanty towns or slums, Rocinha has a better developed infrastructure and hundreds of businesses such as banks, medicine stores, bus routes, cable television, including locally based channel TV ROC (TV Rocinha [pt]), and, at one time, a McDonalds franchise. These factors help classify Rocinha as a favela bairro, or favela neighborhood. [wikipedia]
Among others, you will see following places in Rio de Janeiro by Drone: Rocinha, Favela, Brazil, Rio de Janeira, South Zone, Sao Conrado, Gavea, Hill, Neighbourhood, Slum urbanized Slum Concrete, Brick

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Food in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro! #RiodeJaneiro #BrazilianFood #favela
Favela - An unregulated, informal neighborhood in Brazil. There are estimates of as many as 1,000 favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Many of the favelas in Rio de Janeiro are full cities within themselves, where nearly everything is available.
It’s without a doubt that a lot of crime and organized underground criminal activity happens and is controlled in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. However, favelas across Brazil are home to some of the most hard working, friendly, happy, and creative people in Brazil as well. So in this video my goal was to meet and to highlight some of the amazing people that call favelas home.
Rocinha - The first favela we visited was Rocinha, the biggest favela in Rio, one of the biggest in Brazil. We met up with Guilherme who took us on a walking tour to some viewpoints and to some Brazilian food places.
Sabor da Roça - The most well known little snack shop on this street in Rocinha, we stopped for a coxinha, one of the top Brazilian food snacks. It was packed with chicken and with some hot sauce it was amazing.
Price - 2.5 BRL ($0.63)
For lunch we stopped at an alleyway restaurant in Rocinha, where he cooked up a lunch set included beef ribs, cassava, pasta, rice, and beans. It was simple, but delicious and hearty.
Price - 10 BRL ($2.52)
Morro da Providência - Favela number two is one of the first favelas of Rio and located in downtown Rio de Janeiro, near the port and up on a hill on the side of the cliff. We met up with Jura, who is an absolute Brazilian food cooking legend and an amazing person.
One of Jura’s most famous dishes is nhoque de camarão, an Italian but Brazilian potato noodles in Jura’s own creation sauce of shrimp and coconut milk. It was simply outstanding, all made from scratch.
But the dish I was most interested in eating and which Jura expertly cooked, again from scratch was her feijoada - often considered the national dish of Brazil, and one of my personal favorite foods of Brazil as well - there are few dishes of the world more comforting than beans and pig parts with rice. When you’re in Brazil, you can eat feijoada at many restaurants, but home-cooked is by far the best.
Thank you Jura and Elena!!
This was one of the best days I had in Brazil in terms of learning, meeting people, and food, and it’s an experience and memories I’ll never forget.
You hear a lot of the negative that comes out of favelas in Brazil, and it is true. However, the positive side and the amazing people, are not often recognized, and it was truly memorable to see and learn about this side of hope in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

We've all heard of favelas because when they make it into the news it's always negative. Both loved and hated, favelas speak to the imagination of many. It's no coincidence that many movies such as Fast & the Furious 5, Hulk 2 or music artists such as Michael Jackson, Beyonce and Snoop Dogg have filmed their music videos here.
With 480.000 habitants Rocinha is the biggest (and safest) favela in Rio de Janeiro. The favela counts more than 38.000 houses, 7000 business and has schools, hospital and public library. The people here don't even pay taxes and with the community spirit that reigns here, these are some the nicest (and most handsome) people I've met so far in the marvelous city.

Brazil has well prepared itself for the Olympic Games of 2016, to embrace sports enthusiasts from all over the world. However, the people from the favela’s have, as always, been forgotten.

Barber Shop Brazil talks about the current state of the favela’s and of the common man’s fear, not of dealers, but of the police. This is not a film about corruption but about the life of ordinary teenagers in Brazil’s capital.
The story plays in the outer skirts of Rio, in the Favela Jacarezinho. Barber Pedro rents the chairs in his barber shop to teenagers, but only if they stop getting involved in crime. Not only eager to learn a profession, but the teenagers of Salao Faria have also even developed a very specific haircut: the Jaca Haircut.
We meet 6 populations in transition via the microcosm of the local barbershop. In every episode, a population finds itself on the verge of change and a barber plays his role. As opinion maker, as confessor, as story collector, as society barometer. Gradually, Barber Shop measures the state of our world, offering dialogue and human resilience as a hopeful perspective for the future.

Río de Janeiro - Copacabana y Favela Rocinha I Brasil Vlog #1
