Isle Royale National Park, Michigan | Backpacking and Hiking
Isle Royale National Park in Michigan presented itself for one epic backpacking trip! We took the ferry to and from Isle Royale with our backpacks loaded for a 3 day adventure. It was all of our first time backpacking and camping. The ferry crosses Lake Superior, where we encountered the famous Lake Superior waves on our journey and dropped us off at Rock Harbor where we hiked to find a place we could camp. Isle Royale camping is not to be missed! Watch as our backpacking Isle Royale adventure unfolds!

Isle Royale National Park 2019
In June, our group of 7 headed off for a week of backpacking on Isle Royale. We've been talking about making this happen for over 3 years. It was such an amazing experience! If you love backpacking, this place needs to be on your bucket list. There are different routes to get to the island, and different trails across too, so a fair amount of research is required before you go.
Here was our Route:
Houghton-Hancock: Ranger III Ferry ride to Rock Harbor (6 hr)
3 Mile Campground
Moskey Basin
West Chickenbone
Hatchet Lake
Lake Desor
Windigo
Seaplane back to Houghton-Hancock (45 minutes)
Total Miles Hiked: 46.8
State Parks - Camping Isle Royale
mikeminnesota-youtube You really have to plan ahead for a visit and camping to Isle Royale Island State Park, the largest island on Lake Superior. This is paradise for people who love the unparalleled solitude and adventure of the northern outdoors. You can backpack 165 miles of trails along the shore or inland or day hike shorter routes near Rock Harbor and Windigo boat landings. The Rock Harbor boat landing, northeastern end has “lots of rocky, rugged shoreline, with more spruce, whereas the southwestern part of the island near Windigo is slightly more temperate.
Our 5 day boy Scout Troop camping and canoe outing was planned by someone who has camped on the island once before. You have to apply for a group permit and pick out camp site ahead of time. If you pick the best time of year you should miss the rainy season and damp and foggy weather. Really have to think about the amount of food and supplies you bring into the island. No cell phone service and few park rangers.
The troop portaged from one lake to the next across the east end of the island. Fishing was fantastic. Got to see moose several times and heard wolves every night.
If you what to spend one day visiting the west end of the island. From Minnesota, which is much closer to Isle Royale, you can get a $67 same-day roundtrip boat ride fare. On the east end of the Island there is a lodge you can stay over night or longer. Keep in mind that if you’re coming from the Michigan mainland, you might be facing the longest boat ride of your life—up to six hours!—and the lake’s waves are occasionally really rough.

In July of 2013, I partook as a leader in Troop 77's high adventure trip to Isle Royale NP in Michigan. Throughout the week, I shot nearly 60 GB of video with nearly three cards and five batteries. This is my second time to this island of the Superior wilderness. We ferried from Copper Harbor to Rock Harbor, where our 52 mile trek began. We hiked west to the middle of the island and then back east to Rock Harbor. Beautiful nature, wonderful wilderness. Glory to God!
I do not own the music, but all the video and audio I captured while on Isle Royale NP. Feel free to share, but please do not use for personal or professional gain or promotion without permission.

Trip to Isle Royale National Park, Michigan
This is our trip to Isle Royale National Park in Michigan. It is located in the North West corner of Lake Superior and is one of only 2 biosphere National Parks in the United States. It takes a lot of effort to get there, but, it is worth the trip! Check out the video to see why!
Isle Royale National Park
This was my second solo trip to Isle Royale, the first year it rained the entire trip of the Greenstone Trail...this year I chose the Minong Trail at Windigo to get to Rock Harbor.
No Moose photos, as all of my moose encounters ran me off the trail.
Long story short, I came here two years ago when I felt lost in my life telling the animals out loud I was just here for a little bit, that I think I’ve lost something important...I was unprepared, scared, wet, cried nearly the whole walk letting the rain wash all my sadness into Lake Superior...I finished in two and a half days, But I did it.
I returned this year, prepared. Still scared, but not afraid, and not lost. I met amazing people at the end of my trip. I now realize I come here to lose myself, escape from the busy of life.

Isle Royale National Park: Isle Royale is about exclusive seclusion. The difficulty to get there is part of the charm. No crowds here and the hiking is excellent.

A Truly Remote National Park - MOOSE! - Isle Royale National Park, Michigan
Our family took the ferry from Grand Portage, Michigan 1 1/2 hours to Isle Royale National Park. Visitors can choose between a day trip (which is what we did) or a few nights stay. Backpacking and tent camping are popular in the area, and there are several cabins and lodging available. The island is over 800 square miles, and is located in the northern section of Lake Superior. After an amazing ranger led walk, where we learned the history of the park and all about the animals that live here, we headed down to the campground to spot some animals. A big thank you to Steve V. for sharing his moose footage with us! The kids become new Isle Royale Junior Rangers and make a new friend. HI Makenna! It was a wonderful day exploring one of the least visited national parks in the US.

Hiking the Greenstone: Isle Royale National Park
A short video showing highlights of the 47 miles hiked on the Greenstone Ridge trail. The trail is located on the island National Park: Isle Royale. Located in the remote icy waters of Lake Superior, the island can only be accessed by ferry or seaplane. The isolation of the park makes it one of the least visited National Parks in the United States, but the unique beauty and solitude makes it the most revisited parks! Perfect for two adventurous newlyweds on their honeymoon!
