Amtrak, Metra & CN at 16th St Tower & Metra Rock Island Rush at La Salle St Station, 07.10.12
--The date in the title screen is a typo, and I'm too lazy to fix it! The date was 07.10.12, NOT 2010!--
------------------------------
Some action on a nice summer day at 16th Street Tower and La Salle Street Station.
First, Amtrak's southbound train #393, the 'Illini heads out of downtown Chicago on the St Charles Air Line, across the Metra Rock Island District, and onto Canadian National's ex-IC Chicago Sub at 16th St Tower.
Next, three Rock Island District Metra trains-- two outbound and one inbound, an empty equipment move from the Rocket House coach yard-- cross the SCAL and CN at the tower.
Later, the location is at the north end of the Rock Island District, at the La Salle Street Station terminal, rebuilt in the '80s and formerly home to the original Rock Island and New York Central.
Outbound train #417, the 5:25 Main Line express to Midlothian and Joliet, departs and meets inbound train #422, an express from Joliet and Blue Island. Five minutes later, train #303, the only Main Line express run only to Blue Island on the schedule, departs. Next, #617, the 5:35 Beverly Branch local train, departs, followed five minutes later by train #419, the second-last Main Line run to Joliet. Lastly, empty equipment that arrives from the coach yard that will be the 5:50 departure- train #619, the last Beverly Branch local of the day to Blue Island only. After #619, there are seven more departures from La Salle Street Station on the weekday schedule, but train #421 is the last express / Main Line run. The rest run all the way to Joliet via the Beverly Branch.
Later, we are back at 16th Street Tower, where a CN freight comes up the curved grade on the Chicago Sub, approaching the junction. CN SD70M-2 #8879 and
C44-9W #2526 lug a long unit ethanol train across the St Charles Air Line connector, and across the Metra Rock Island District at the tower. The bridge on the connector track in the foreground has been filled in underneath, (because CTA's Red Line subway is now under this area) but until the 1970s, the C&WI / Santa Fe tracks to Dearborn Station went under the bridge. There is some pretty extreme flexing and pumping of the jointed rail, which seems poorly maintained here.

Rick Perlstein – Jimmy Carter and the Origins of the Democratic Party Cult of Austerity
The Democratic Party's retreat from its New Deal and Great Society identity as a party eager to use the federal treasury to spend in the public interest to create a broadly shared prosperity is usually associated with the Clinton administration in the 1990s. It actually dates to the Carter administration. This talk will narrate this shift, and explained two political consequences that flowed from it: its failure to placate the Democratic Party's critics on the right, who consistently refused to recognize the shift, even as it attenuated the trust that had formerly reposed in the party among its traditional white working class constituencies.
RICK PERLSTEIN is the author of The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan [amazon.com/Invisible-Bridge-…gan/dp/1491534737]. Before that, he published Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America (2008)[amazon.com/Nixonland-Rise-Pr…ica/dp/074324303X], a New York Times bestseller picked as one of the best nonfiction books of the year by over a dozen publications, and Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus [amazon.com/Before-Storm-Gold…sus/dp/1568584121], winner of the 2001 Los Angeles Times Book Award for history. A contributing writer at The Nation, former chief national correspondent for the Village Voice, and a former online columnist for the New Republic and Rolling Stone, his journalism and essays have appeared in Newsweek, The New York Times, and many other publications. Politico called him the “chronicler extraordinaire of American conservatism,” who “offers a hint of how interesting the political and intellectual dialogue might be if he could attract some mimics.” The Nation called him the “hyper caffeinated Herodotus of the American century.”

Places to see in ( Chicago - USA )
Places to see in ( Chicago - USA )
Chicago, on Lake Michigan in Illinois, is among the largest cities in the U.S. Famed for its bold architecture, it has a skyline punctuated by skyscrapers such as the iconic John Hancock Center, 1,451-ft. Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) and the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower. The city is also renowned for its museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago with its noted Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works.
Steely skyscrapers, top chefs, rocking festivals – the Windy City will blow you away with its low-key cultured awesomeness. It's hard to know what to gawp at first. High-flying architecture is everywhere, from the stratospheric, glass-floored Willis Tower to Frank Gehry's swooping silver Pritzker Pavilion to Frank Lloyd Wright's stained-glass Robie House. Whimsical public art studs the streets; you might be walking along and wham, there's an abstract Picasso statue that's not only cool to look at, but you're allowed to go right up and climb on it. For art museums, take your pick: impressionist masterpieces at the massive Art Institute, psychedelic paintings at the mid-sized Museum of Mexican Art or outsider drawings at the small Intuit gallery.
Loosen your belt – you've got a lot of eating to do. On the menu: peanut-butter-and-banana-topped waffles for breakfast (at Stephanie Izard's Little Goat), a chicken, apple and cranberry hot dog for lunch (at Hot G Dog), and 20 courses of centrifuged, encapsulated molecular gastronomy for dinner (at Grant Achatz' Alinea). You can also chow down on a superb range of ethnic eats from Vietnamese pho to Mexican carnitas, Polish pierogi and Macanese fat rice. Still hungry? Order a late-night deep-dish pizza.
Chicago is a maniacal sports town, with a pro team for every season (two teams, in baseball's case). Watching a game is a local rite of passage, whether you slather on the blue-and-orange body paint for a Bears football game, join the raucous baseball crowd in Wrigley Field's bleachers, or plop down on a bar stool at the neighborhood tavern for whatever match is on TV. Count on making lots of spirited new friends. Should the excitement rub off and inspire you to get active yourself, the city's 26 beaches and 580 parks offer a huge array of play options.
Chicago knows how to rock a festival. Between March and September it throws around 200 shindigs. The specialty is music. Blues Fest brings half a million people to Millennium Park to hear guitar notes slide and bass lines roll, all for free. During the four-day Lollapalooza mega-party, rock bands thrash while the audience dances in an arm-flailing frenzy. Smaller, barbecue-scented street fests take place in the neighborhoods each weekend – though some rival downtown for star power on their stages (oh, hey, Olivia Newton-John at Northalsted Market Days).

Mom Warns Other About Dangers of Swimming In Quarries After Son Died
More from Inside Edition:
Thousands of quarries exist across the country but some can be disastrous. Jonathan Baksh, 19, jumped into Martin's Creek quarry in Pennsylvania in 2015, but he never made it back to land after suffering a cramp in the water. His mom was stunned when she found out her son was the second young man to die in quarry that year. Now, as the one year anniversary of her son's passing arrives next month, she's on a crusade to tell the world about the dangers of swimming in quarries.
Schilling Celebrates Hero Street Memorial Park's 40th Anniversary
Renamed Hero Street USA in 1967, Silvis' Second Street was formed when a group of families were forced to move from the Rock Island Railroad where they had been living in boxcars to a short dirt path a mere block and a half long. At the start of World War II, 45 young men and women from the 35 tight-knit families of Second Street heard the call to serve their country and volunteered to join the United States Armed Forces to preserve our freedom. When the Korean and Vietnam Wars broke out, even more enlisted and served as soldiers. In all, nearly 100 residents of this street's 35 families helped defend our country and our allies.
Eight of these brave soldiers from Second Street died for our country in these conflicts, potentially the most combat deaths of any single street in the United States. Their names are Tony Pompa, Frank Sandoval, Joseph Sandoval, William Sandoval, Claro Solis, Peter Macias, Joe Gomez, and Johnny Munos. It was in honor of their sacrifice that the name of Second Street was changed to Hero Street in 1967. Four years later a memorial park was built on Hero Street, and in 2007 a monument was added.
I look forward to joining my friends in Silvis to honor the brave soldiers and families who have called Hero Street their home, Schilling said of the October 29 gathering in Silvis. Silvis' tight-knit, patriotic residents fought tooth-and-nail for this park to ensure these soldiers' legacies live on. Today, 40 years later, Hero Street Memorial Park continues to recognize the ultimate sacrifice that eight men from this street have made serving their country in World War II and the Korean War. On behalf of a grateful nation, I look forward to honoring the 40th anniversary of Hero Street Memorial Park. The service and sacrifice of all who served and their families must not be forgotten.
On July 29, 2011, Schilling introduced H.Res.381, a resolution expressing the House of Representatives' support for Hero Street Memorial Park. His bipartisan resolution has been cosponsored by Congressmen Donald Manzullo (IL-16), Bruce Braley (IA-01), and Dave Loebsack (IA-02). Companion legislation has been introduced in the United States Senate by United States Senator Mark Kirk (R).
New York City, United States city tour
There are slides of Times Square, Statue of Liberty, Manhattan Skyline, Brooklyn Bridge, One World Trade Center, Central Park, Headquarters of the United Nations, Grand Central Station, New York Public Library, Metropolitan Museum of Art, etc.
New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York metropolitan area, the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States and one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. A global power city, New York exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world.
Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of New York State. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. New York is the most densely populated major city in the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.
New York City traces its roots to its 1624 founding as a trading post by colonists of the Dutch Republic and was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a globally recognized symbol of the United States and its democracy.
Many districts and landmarks in New York City have become well known, and the city received a record 56 million tourists in 2014, hosting three of the world's ten most visited tourist attractions in 2013. Several sources have ranked New York the most photographed city in the world. Times Square, iconic as the world's heart[51] and its Crossroads, is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway Theater District, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. The names of many of the city's bridges, skyscrapers, and parks are known around the world. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world. Manhattan's Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere, with multiple signature Chinatowns developing across the city. Providing continuous 24/7 service, the New York City Subway is one of the most extensive metro systems worldwide, with 469 stations in operation. New York City's higher education network comprises over 120 colleges and universities, including Columbia University, New York University, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top 35 in the world.
