Maligne Canyon Ice Walk (2018) Jasper National Park Alberta Canada - Backcountry Forward
Explore the magnificent Maligne Canyon Ice Walk in Jasper National Park in Alberta Canada! A spectacular winter hike for all to see!
Maligne Canyon is a beautiful sight to see in summer, but perhaps even more spectacular in the winter months. This ice walk along Maligne Canyon's frozen floor is one of Jasper National Park's most popular winter destinations and is a must see for all!
We ventured into the canyon to see its sights and enjoy the wonder of looking up the steep water-carved canyon walls. You can expect to see many frozen waterfalls and ice formations throughout the journey. You'll definitely want a pair of ice spikes/crampons for this hike!
Paid tours are offered for those wanting the experience of a guide taking them through Maligne Canyon, however, you can also enjoy this hike at your own risk without a guide. For some, a guide would be best, especially if you're not comfortable with winter hiking, or are new to the Rock Mountains; avid hikers and locals can enjoy this trek with ease and just a bit of common sense.
Maligne Canyon is located in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada and is only about 15 minutes away from the town of Jasper. Begin the hike at the 5th bridge turnout when driving Maligne Road. The trail is hard to miss!
Make sure you bring your camera, there will be many sights along the way!

Canadian Rockies Backpacking Adventure Pt. 1
In late July of 2017, my wife Tori and I, along with our dog Buck rented a camper van in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada from North Campervans and then headed towards the Rocky Mountains. Our plan was to backpack from the Celestine Trailhead which is just north of the Trans Canada Highway in Jasper National Park, to the town of Grand Cache, Alberta. Our route would see us follow the North Boundary Trail and then cut North through Desolation Pass, and over the height-of-land into Wilmore Wilderness where we would pick up the fabled Mountain Trail that we'd follow all the way back to the road system and Grande Cache. We had 160km of traveling in front of us, and in only 8 days to complete it. To make matters worse, we ended up having to start our trip 6km before the official trailhead. You see, the Celestine Rd is pretty much a glorified horse packing trail, and it's only open for vehicle use between certain times in a given direction. To give our shuttle driver enough time to get out of there without the chance of meeting another vehicle head on at the edge of a cliff, we had to jump out prematurely and see him on his way. He would then drive with our vehicle to Grand Cache so it would be therefor our arrival. I would not recommend going in on the Celestine Rd. in a two wheel-drive vehicle like we did, a 4x4 is the way to go, or at least something with some more clearance as the road it pretty rough.
The smoke in the air form the rampant BC forest fires was concerning as it was burning my eyes, and making me worry that the fires may encroach. But we pushed on, apprehensive that we'd bitten off more than we could chew - we needed to average 20km a day and our packs were heavy. The earlier stretches of the North Boundary Trail are not shockingly beautiful like the rest of Jasper, however it's flat and easy to navigate, plus any monotony is quickly forgotten with a side trip into Snake Indian Falls, it's thought to be one of the most impressive waterfalls in the Rockies. Alternate access to this route is via Rock Lake though you'd miss the Falls. Broken again at the end of day two, we passed the Rock Lake Trail fork, and knew it was our last chance to bail. But even though we were pushing ourselves so hard, it was so rewarding when we'd reach camp and meet our daily goal again, that we never considered it.
The trail between Little Heaven Campsite in Jasper and Mountain Trail in Wilmore Wilderness is completely unmaintained, and difficult to get info on. When you're high up in Glacier and and then Desolation Pass, you're past the tree line and heading through a valley flanked by barren peaks on either side which help guide the way. The trail was particularly hard - even perhaps non-existent after coming down out of the pass aways and getting towards Summit Cabin in Wilmore. We took a wrong turn here late in the evening and had to walk an extra gruelling 2km off trail arriving at camp seconds before dark after a 13 hour day of trekking, but this was only our half way point. Watch part Two to see how the trip ends up.

No network coverage: Fishing in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada
In July 2012 I was hiking and fishing in Canadian Rocky Mountains in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Beautiful mountain trails, crystal clear waters, fish - I appreciated these all. But what I appreciated the most and what was difficult to reflect in this video was kind-hearted and friendly people of Canada. In short, here when they say to you: Have a nice day!, they really mean it. Go there and experience this yourself...

Those big mountains almost talk to you when you look at them. Well, it depends on how many beers you drink when you're hanging out in these towns.
If you look slightly to the right of where I'm driving on the highway, there's a nice path for bicycles.

Rocky Mountain CANADA___Jasper national park
Jasper is a specialized municipality in western Alberta, Canada. It is the commercial centre of Jasper National Park, located in the Canadian Rockies in the Athabasca River valley.
Jasper is 362 kilometres (225 mi) west of Edmonton. Jasper is 290 kilometres (180 mi) north of Banff, Alberta, with the Icefields Parkway connecting the Jasper townsite to Lake Louise in Banff National Park. It was established as a specialized municipality on July 20, 2001[3] and the governance of Jasper is shared between the Municipality of Jasper and the federal Parks Canada agency
Jasper National Park is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, spanning 10,878 km² (4200 mi²). It is located in the province of Alberta, north of Banff National Park and west of the City of Edmonton. The park includes the glaciers of the Columbia Icefield, hot springs, lakes, waterfalls and mountains. Wildlife in the park includes elk, caribou, moose, mule deer, white-tailed deer, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, grizzly bear, black bear, beaver, Rocky Mountain pika, hoary marmot, grey wolf, mountain lion, and wolverine.
This park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, together with the other national and provincial parks that form the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks, for the mountain landscapes containing mountain peaks, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, canyons, and limestone caves as well as fossils found here.
Athabasca Falls is a waterfall in Jasper National Park on the upper Athabasca River, approximately 30 kilometres south of the townsite of Jasper, Alberta, and just west of the Icefields Parkway. A powerful, picturesque waterfall, Athabasca Falls is not known so much for the height of the falls (23 metres), as it is known for its force due to the large quantity of water falling into the gorge. Even on a cold morning in the fall, when river levels tend to be at their lowest, copious amounts of water flow over the falls. The river 'falls' over a layer of hard quartzite and through the softer limestone below carving the short gorge and a number of potholes. The falls are able to be safely viewed and photographed from various viewing platforms and walking trails around the falls. Access is from the nearby parking lot, which leads off Highway 93A just northeast of the falls. Highway 93A takes off from the nearby Icefields Parkway, and crosses the falls on the way north to the town of Jasper. White water rafting often starts below the falls to travel downstream on the Athabasca River to Jasper, Alberta.
It is a class 5 waterfall, with a drop of 80 ft (24 m) and a width of 60 ft (18 m).
Peyto Lake is a glacier-fed lake located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake itself is easily accessed from the Icefields Parkway. It was named for Bill Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area.
The lake is formed in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft).
During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. Because of its bright color, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists in the park. The lake is best seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefield Parkway.
The lake is fed by the Peyto Creek, which drains water from the Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield), and flows into the Mistaya River.
Moraine Lake is a glacially-fed lake in Banff National Park, 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) outside the Village of Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. It is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, at an elevation of approximately 6,183 feet (1,885 m). The lake has a surface area of .5 square kilometres (0.19 sq mi).
The lake, being glacially fed, does not reach its crest until mid to late June. When it is full, it reflects a distinct shade of blue. The color is due to the refraction of light off the rock flour deposited in the lake on a continual basis.
Takakkaw Falls is a waterfall located in Yoho National Park, near Field, British Columbia, in Canada. Its highest point is 384 metres (1,260 ft) from its base, making it the second-highest officially measured waterfall in western Canada, after Della Falls on Vancouver Island. However its true free-fall is only 254 metres (833 ft).
Takakkaw, loosely translated from Cree, means something like it is magnificent. The falls are fed by the Daly Glacier, which is part of the Waputik Icefield. The glacier keeps the volume of the falls up during the warm summer months, and they are a tourist attraction, particularly in late spring after the heavy snow melts, when the falls are at peak condition. The Takakkaw Falls were featured in the 1995 film Last of the Dogmen.

Landscape Photography - Banff National Park and Jasper National Park in 7 Days!
The Canadian Rockies had been on my list of places to photograph for many years. In June 2017, it finally became a reality. We decided to focus our 7 day landscape photography trip in Banff National Park and Jasper National Park. We had high expectations and were not disappointed with the amazing and diverse scenery that was seemingly found everywhere we explored. Since it was summer time, daylight lasted very long and we wanted to make the most of it! We averaged 19 hour days to catch both sunrise and sunset, always eager to experience the next location (and the journey to it!). In addition, Canada was celebrating their 150th Anniversary, so national park passes were on the house! These two parks were amazing to see, but are just a fraction of the beauty Alberta and Canada have to offer. We will definitely have to return and explore more! Hope you enjoy the video!

Winter in Jasper National Park, Alberta
Winter in Jasper is magical although the weather can be very unpredictable.
In our 3 days in Jasper the temperature went up and down by 15-20 degrees Celsius but it looked so beautiful in the snow. We managed to see almost everything on our bucket list but let me know in the comments if we have missed anything in case we can go again.
