Why is Ronald Reagan here in Budapest ?
Why is Ronald Reagan here in Budapest? The statue was unveiled in June 2011 and Mr. Reagan, former US president, has been attributed with the end of the Soviet Era for all the Eastern Bloc countries ie. Hungary. Remember the speech he gave in Berlin, 1987 demanding Mr. Gorbechev to tear down this wall. Well that ended the era and liberation of Hungary from Soviet occupation. A great touristic site so go take a photograph with this former US president. I did :)

The difference compared with earlier statues is that it was a big challenge to prepare a statue of the president of the United States, the world's leading power, and I hadn't done it before.

17. SOUNDBITE (English) Marton Baranyi, admirer of Reagan:
I think Ronald Reagan is a role model for Hungarians and he could be a role model for politicians and nowadays he can be, because he was brave, he took his stand against communism, and he had a great effort to do this.
18. Tilt up of Reagan bust
19. SOUNDBITE (English) Marton Baranyi, admirer of Reagan:
I think my generation and our parents' generation owe much to the late president and his heritage because he made our world freer and he achieved that we could grow up in a free world, we could have our voice, we can start our businesses, we can say what we want and I think we attribute this partly to Ronald Reagan.

STORYLINE
Ronald Reagan never visited Hungary, but his efforts to end communism endeared him to many Hungarians - and now have earned him his second statue in Budapest.
Less than five years after erecting a bust of America's 40th president in a park, Hungary's capital is honouring Reagan with a full statue in Freedom Square, just a couple blocks from parliament and home to the US embassy.
The bronze 2-meter (7-foot) likeness, placed on a thin block of granite, shows Reagan in mid-stride, making it seem as if he's is taking a walk in the square.
Sculptor Istvan Mate had to work fast to meet his deadline, first preparing a mould from a clay model sculpted around a metal core, then casting seven separate bronze pieces weighing a total of 180 kilograms (400 pounds) and welding them together.
It was a big challenge to prepare a statue of the president of the United States, the world's leading power, Mate told The Associated Press as he put the finishing touches on the statue in his workshop in Csongrad, a small town 150 kilometres (93 miles) southeast of Budapest.
Mate has more than 140 works on display around Hungary - many of them done in collaboration with his wife, Gyorgyi Lantos - but the Reagan statue will be his first in Budapest.
The sculptor said the statue was meant to reflect Reagan's ease in connecting with people.

STORYLINE
Ronald Reagan never visited Hungary, but his efforts to end communism endeared him to many Hungarians - and now have earned him his second statue in Budapest.
Less than five years after erecting a bust of America's 40th president in a park, Hungary's capital honoured Reagan with a full statue in Freedom Square.
Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban were present at the unveiling ceremony on Wednesday.
The bronze 2-metre (7-foot) likeness of the 40th president was erected in Budapest at Freedom Square, near both the US Embassy and a World War II memorial to Soviet soldiers killed during the ouster of the Nazis from Hungary.
Reagan was remembered for the aid and encouragement he gave Hungary and other former Soviet satellite states in Eastern Europe to gain back their freedom.
Rice said the cause of the freedom fighters in Hungary's failed anti-Soviet revolution in 1956 deepened Reagan's commitment to ending communist rule around the world.
Reagan changed this world and created new worlds for Central Europe, Orban said at the unveiling ceremony.
A large facsimile of Reagan's signature identifies the statue made by Istvan Mate and a touchscreen monitor nearby provides information about Reagan in Hungarian and English.
The statue, which shows Reagan in mid-stride, is the second memorial erected in his honour in Budapest, where a bust of the former actor and governor of California was placed in City Park in 2006.
We Hungarians we can thank him a lot and this is only a small token (of the) Hungarian people, said one man at the ceremony.
Another man added that he liked Reagan's humour, presence and stamina.
He was all the good things that the United States represents, he said.
The event is part of a series of commemorations of the 100th anniversary of Reagan's birth being held across Europe including Poland and the Czech Republic.

RONALD REAGAN
NY STATUE I BUDAPEST REJST FORDI REGA N MEDVIRKEDE TIL MURENS FALD I ØSTEUROPA
Socialist Realist Statues, Budapest.
See the strapping commie folk, strutting through sporting, social, work and military situations!
Almost all the statues which are the silent witnesses of the Communist era in Budapest are removed out of the city center and nowadays to find in the Memento park on the outskirts of the city.
However, there are still a a few Socialist Realist (or, popular, Communist) statues that not have been banned. This is particularly the case for a series of 16 statues which are located in the Puskás Ferenc stadium. But, due to lack of maintenance and plans to build on this spot, this unique sculpture group is in its existence threatened.
It is a strange mix of, at one hand, statues which are showing different kinds of sports and beside statues which are typical for a Communist era. The group is made between 1953 and 1959. The statues which are very characteristic for the Communist period and the 50s have many similarities with e.g. the reliefs which were made in the 50s above the doors of apartment complexes in Budapest: unity, togetherness, the happy life and the family. In contrast to the disappeared statues, these artworks are in majority still present. There are also some statues that warn of taking action against the government, this by portraying soldiers and weapons. The images from before 1956 are more Communistic than the statues which were made afterwards.
The sculpture group is in danger. On the one hand by the already above outlined plans of building a new stadium, at the other hand due to lack of maintenance and weather influences. Beside the current Fidesz leaders also tries to remove the Communist traces just like the Jewish history in Budapest is swept under the rug. For an independent description of the history you don't have to count on the coöperation of the government, whose leader Victor Orbán on Facebook already has got the name Orbanescu ..... Requests by museums and individuals to the put the statues on the list of official monuments are therefore thus far rejected and the probability that the statues one of these days suddenly are disappeared, is huge.
