20 scenic seaside hotels in Great Britain
Hotel Tresanton, St Mawes, Cornwall: On the edge of a pretty fishing village, overlooking the sweep of Falmouth Bay, with views of St Anthony’s lighthouse, this hotel occupies a cluster of houses, made over by Olga Polizzi, doyenne of British hoteliers, in her trademark simple-chic style.
All bedrooms have a sea view, some a private terrace. The interiors are filled with works by Cornish artists, antiques, objets d’art and curiosities.
Modern menus include a fresh fish of the day. There are terraces, a lush garden, and plans for a Mediterranean beach club and juice café.
B&B; from $330 (£260). À la carte $56 (£44). No children under six at dinner. 44 (0)1326 270055, tresanton.com
The Old Coastguard, Mouseshole, Cornwall: This whitewashed former coastguard’s station is a relaxed and happy place, furnished and decorated in casual-chic, mix-and-match style.
You can take tea on the terrace, in sub-tropical gardens sloping down to the harbor wall; dine on local fish and shellfish.
Bedrooms (some with balcony) are hung with Cornish art. Most have a sea view.
With its winding streets and harbor, Mousehole (say Mowzel) was for Dylan Thomas quite the prettiest village in England. Have a drink in the bar – or at the Ship Inn, where Thomas and his fiancée binged away their wedding money – but make time for yoga, sailing, visits to gardens beaches, artists’ colonies.
B&B; from $184.50 (£140). Set dinner $26–$32 (£19.50–£24.50), à la carte $32 (£24.50). 01736 731222, oldcoastguardhotel.co.uk
Driftwood, Portscatho, Cornwall: Follow the woodland path that winds down through the landscaped garden to a private beach from this New-England-inspired hotel overlooking Gerrans Bay, or sink into an Adirondack chair on the lawn and soak up the view.
Bedrooms are decorated in shades of sun and sand. In the evenings, hurricane lamps are lit on the decking for guests lingering over aperitifs.
There’s early supper for the little ones, Michelin-starred cooking in the airy dining room for adults and kids aged 7 and upwards. Ask for a picnic hamper and spend a day by the water.
B&B; from $235 (£185). Tasting menus $95–$121 (£75–£95), à la carte $83 (£65). 01872 580644, driftwoodhotel.co.uk
The Nare, Veryan-in-Roseland, Cornwall: Traditional, luxurious and friendly, this hotel was founded in 1989 by the present owner’s grandmother. Verdant gardens lead down to the sandy beach.
Many bedrooms have an ocean view. Old-fashioned touches include a valet to unpack for you, hot-water bottles and a silver-service restaurant with flambé trolley.
Enjoy a dip in the outdoor pool or a game of tennis or croquet before a Cornish cream tea. The climate of the Roseland peninsula is temperate, almost Mediterranean, and garden visits beckon.
Come in early spring to see the national collection of magnolias at Caerhays Castle. Book a trip on the Nare’s skippered yacht or motor launch.
B&B; from $369 (£290). Set dinner and á la carte $64 (£50).
Fowey Hall, Fowey, Cornwall: Pronounced Foy, here’s one for the kids – not least because Kenneth Grahame is believed to have taken the Italianate Victorian mansion overlooking the Fowey estuary as his model for Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows.
While adults relax in the library, billiards room and spa, the younger guests can help to collect eggs from the hens, walk Bramble the dog, bounce on a trampoline, whizz down a zip wire.
There are family rooms, flexible meal options (from high tea to a candlelit dinner), a playroom for rainy days, fishing nets and buckets and spades for days spent on the sands or messing about in boats.
Fowey Hall is part of the Luxury Family Hotels group; sister hotel Polurrian Bay, Mullion, has a private beach.
B&B; from $242 (£190). Set dinner $38–$51 (£30–£40), à la carte $51 (£40). 01726 833866, foweyhallhotel.co.uk
Boskerris Hotel, St Ives, Cornwall: A pilchard-fishing town turned arty enclave on the north Cornish coast, St Ives is thronged in summer. Visit Tate St Ives gallery, browse the shops, then escape via the coastal path or by train (in just three minutes) to this 1930s hotel on the hillside overlooking Carbis Bay.
Interiors are cool, chic, stripped down. Most bedrooms have a panoramic Atlantic view towards Godrevy lighthouse, inspiration for Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. Indulgences include a massage in the treatment room, a Cornish cream tea on the terrace.
B&B; from $197 (£155). À la carte $34 (£27). Children 10 and over welcome. 01736 795295, boskerrishotel.co.uk
Bedruthan Hotel and Spa, Mawgan Porth, Cornwall: With a sophisticated spa, outdoor play areas, games room, complimentary child care, pools and poolside snack bar, tennis, kids’ club and art gallery, this lively hotel, a short stroll from the beach, is avowedly family friendly.
You can eat informally, alfresco on the terrace or in the Wild Café. For more sophisticated fare dine in the Herring, watching the sun set over the sea through picture windows.

Worst Virtual Reality ? Tyler's Birthday at VR centre Plymouth
We celebrate Tyler's Birthday at Plymouth's Virtual Reality Centre. The experience costs £80 for six people. The wording on website implies the participants will have an hour and participate at the same time. In reality they had less than eight minutes each and had to take in turns with the one headset.. You have to be over 10 to participate so we took the younger kids (5, 8 and 8 years) to watch Tyler and his chosen five play. The website says there are hot drinks and refreshments available which is how we convinced his Grandmother to come and watch! They had decided upon the Whale or rollercoaster experience as advertised on the website. On arrival it wasn't quite what we imagined. It was a large room with a seperate area containing the headset. The noise of the broken loo constantly refilling and making the pipes screech was uncomfortable. There was a fridge with some cold drinks in. A pool table which was not free as the website stated. We were told to watch a video so an experience could be chosen. We told the member of staff we wanted the whale one. He said he didn't have it and offered no further explanation. We asked for the rollercoaster and once again were told no, with no further explanation. This is discussed at the start of our video and it was very strange indeed especially as we spotted the whale picture on the wall!! They eventually chose the haunted house but couldn't play that as it was for over 16 year olds although it was fine for the younger ones to watch. In the end the younger ones chose their own while the rest played the haunted house one which was incredible boring apart from the younger kids scaring themselves and screaming. My elderly mother asked to buy a coffee but was told they didn't sell hot drinks. Once again this was advertised on their website.
All our outings are family orientated. Most places we visit, bringing non-participants has never been an issue. It was here. aside from the six participants there was myself, sis, mum, nephew and three little girls. I really thought from the wording on the website that we could sit and watch while enjoying our purchased refreshments. This was not the case.
We were so disappointed with the experience that I emailed the owner to suggest the wording of the group VR experience on offer is misleading and that we were disappointed that the advertised games weren't actually available. I also pointed out that the free pool advertised wasn't honoured. I was really surprised by their response and anger. I was asked what did I expect for the money and they denied us ever asking about the whale and rollercoaster experiences. They reported that they were not happy with the spectators being there and the member of staff felt uncomfortable with our presence which is why he wouldn't sell us coffee. I never imagined my elderly mother and three young children could be perceived as intimidating. Anyway, it was rubbish! The video makes it look good. It wasn't. Thanksgiving, currently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November by federal legislation in 1941, has been an annual tradition in the United States by presidential proclamation since 1863 and by state legislation since the Founding Fathers of the United States. Historically, Thanksgiving has traditionally been a celebration of the blessings of the (agricultural) year, including the harvest
Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Several other places around the world observe similar celebrations. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and on the second Monday of October in Canada. Thanksgiving has its historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, and has long been celebrated in a secular manner as well.
In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly, but not universally, traced to a poorly documented 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. Pilgrims and Puritans who began emigrating from England in the 1620s and 1630s carried the tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them to New England. Several days of Thanksgiving were held in early New England history that have been identified as the First Thanksgiving, including Pilgrim holidays in Plymouth in 1621 and 1623, and a Puritan holiday in Boston in 1631. According to historian Jeremy Bangs, director of the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum, the Pilgrims may have been influenced by watching the annual services of Thanksgiving for the relief of the siege of Leiden in 1574, while they were staying in Leiden. In later years, religious thanksgiving services were declared by civil leaders such as Governor Bradford, who planned a thanksgiving celebration and fast in 1623. The practice of holding an annual harvest festival did not become a regular affair in New England until the late 1660s.
Thanksgiving proclamations were made mostly by church leaders in New England up until 1682, and then by both state and church leaders until after the American Revolution. During the revolutionary period, political influences affected the issuance of Thanksgiving proclamations. Various proclamations were made by royal governors, John Hancock, General George Washington, and the Continental Congress, each giving thanks to God for events favorable to their causes. As President of the United States, George Washington proclaimed the first nation-wide thanksgiving celebration in America marking November 26, 1789, as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favours of Almighty God.
In modern times the President of the United States, in addition to issuing a proclamation, will pardon a turkey, which spares the bird's life and ensures that it will spend the duration of its life roaming freely on farmland.
The Business of Playing in a Game Show
Ever dreamed of hearing your name called to ‘come on down?’ Game show contestant wannabes no longer have to wait. There’s a Golden Valley business making game show dreams a reality.
Just off of Highway 55 and Boone Avenue North, there’s a beige building where game show nostalgia is whirling.
Welcome to Game Show Battle Rooms, where the sweet taste of victory can be followed by the sting of defeat.
“People love it, they’ve come back to play our other arenas because we have two arenas, and they vary in games and style,” said Mariah Himmelwright, operations manager at Game Show Battle Rooms.
There are five games total, each one with a familiar spin on a classic, like Friendly Feud, Wheel of Phrases, Name that Price, Million Dollar Trivia, and Minute Games.
Groups can sign up for either 60 minutes or 90 minutes of game show glory. The appeal has been far reaching from grandparents to grandchildren.
“We’ve had a couple of elderly homes come in, we’ve had high school hockey teams, football teams, our market range is huge and anyone can play and anyone is able to do it,” said Himmelwright.
Kenneth Latham and his family decided to make their game show run into a battle between the sexes to see how the chips would fall. Spoiler alert: the ladies lead never let up
“My parents actually gifted this to the entire family for Christmas, and so we’re just getting around to receiving that,” said Latham.
Even though the men in Latham’s family ended up on the losing end, no one walked away unhappy.
“It was amazing, it fulfilled the dream of being on a game show, I mean doesn’t everybody want to do that,” said Latham.
If anything, the photo that the winning participants walk away with, showing them with a giant trophy, may fuel a rematch in the Latham family, and that’s exactly the kind of competition this business loves to see.
“We want people to have fun, and we want them to come back,” said Himmelwright.
Game Show Battle Rooms are open seven days a week. The cost is 30 dollars per person.
