GNS WEEKLY NEWS: MEXICO: RIOT
(8 Aug 1999) Natural Sound
Mexico has beaten Brazil 4-3 in soccer's Confederations Cup in the country's first international tournament victory.
But the celebrations in Mexico City were marred by rioting in the streets on Wednesday night.
Thousands of Mexicans wearing traditional wide straw hats danced and cheered as they spilled onto the streets of Mexico City on Wednesday to celebrate their country's 4-3 victory over Brazil in soccer's Confederations Cup.
But during the night the celebrations turned ugly when the crowds began to clash with police.
Fighting broke out and missiles were thrown at police lines, resulting in about a hundred arrests and several people being taken to hospital.
Mexicans who had come out to celebrate the soccer victory found themselves having to escape from the crowds.
The evening started with an enormous impromptu festival around Mexico City's Independence Monument.
Fans showered each other with spray foam and ran laps around the base of the monument in celebration.
Mexicans across the country are not only ecstatic, but perhaps also relieved with what they see as a long-overdue victory.
The Confederations Cup, a biannual tournament that began in 1993, brings together the champions of each continent.
Brazil won the last cup in 1997 and was the favourite in Wednesday's game.
But Mexico maintained its unbeaten record at home - it hasn't lost to another national team at Mexico City's Azteca stadium in 18 years.
Mexico, though, has never won the world's foremost international tournament, the World Cup.
Fans are praising the Mexican coach Manuel Lapuente, saying he turned the squad around with his intelligent game plan.
Lapuente himself explained that the team played offensively and played to win.
Brazil's fearsome defence seemed to crumble as the Mexicans fought their way toward the goal posts throughout the Wednesday night match.
Miguel Zepeda scored twice, and Jose Manuel Abundis and Cuauhtemoc Blanco each added a goal.
Brazil's goals came from Serginho, Roni and Ze Roberto.
Brazilian coach Wanderley Luxemburgo congratulated the Mexicans but pointed out that Brazil fielded a young team which included only three players who were on the roster for last year's World Cup.
During the match, the capacity crowd of 110-thousand pulsated with energy, beating drums, blowing horns and showering the field with confetti.

What to Do if You're Ever Followed By a Mountain Lion
Two hikers in California got the shock of their lives when they came face-to-face with a mountain lion. Brian McKinney and Sam Vonderheide were on the High Sierra Trail in Sequoia National Park on July 23 when they locked eyes with the beast as it stood stoic on the mountain. The hikers, who recorded the incident, contemplated what to do. One wanted to run away but the ferocious cat looked ready to pounce. At the end of the clip, they slowly back away from the beast.

*Cómo llegar a Holbox:

Session 1: Religion and Politics, 1920-1970

November 22, 2019 | Religion remains central to life in Mexico and Mexican America. Religious understandings and goals inform and energize politics, community lives, gender relations, migration, and more. Yet there is no singular Mexican religion; rather, a universe of visions and understandings shape the changing communities of Mexico and Mexican America. The powerful and the populace, rural peoples and the growing numbers streaming into cities across greater North America live in worlds defined and at times contested by religious commitments.
This event engaged with diverse analysts to discuss religion in Mexico and Mexican America during decades of change—from the debates of the 1920s to the challenges of our times.
This event was co-sponsored by the Mexican Cultural Institute of Washington DC, Catholic University of America, and Georgetown University's Americas Initiative, Center for Latin American Studies, and its Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs.
