Vigil for Orlando shooting victims in Chicago
(13 Jun 2016) Across the US, people have been gathering at vigils to honour the victims of the shooting attack at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, that left 50 people dead and 53 wounded.
Members of LGBT groups and their supporters met in the Boystown neighbourhood of Chicago on Sunday.
Among them was Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, who said the city has stepped up security in gay communities.
Also there in solidarity were mothers who had lost their children to gun violence.
David Sotomayor, a Chicagoan whose cousin Edward Sotomayor was killed at the club, also spoke.
I cannot even understand why this would happen, he said.

MARINO FROST & THE SQUIRES @ Neir's Dec-17-10 MIX PART 3
MARINO FROST & THE SQUIRES
Live performance at Neir's Tavern on December 17, 2010
Jimi Hendrix's band from New York, The Squires, perform together again! After Jimi moved from New York to London, where he made his break-through, his band The Squires broke up and never played together since 1966. The original band members other than Jimi Hendrix (vocal and guitar), included Curtis Knight (vocal), Ace Hall (bass) and Ditto (drums). Jimi and Curtis passed away, but Ace and Ditto are still rocking! On 2009, after all these years, they suddenly discovered 14 unreleased songs, recorded in 1965, when they played with Hendrix live in a club in New Jersey. Ace brought it to the guitarist and producer Marino Frost, who remixed and mastered the material in his recording studio. After that, Ace and Ditto asked Marino to join them, in order to play as a reunion band.
HORACE ACE HALL was born in Houston. He came from the Texas school of blues and rock. As a teenager, he played in the local clubs. When he finished high school, he joined the Jimmy McCracklin Blues Band on tour, featuring Willie Big Mama Mae Thornton (Hound Dog, etc.). They traveled from Texas to California, playing clubs along the way. In Los Angeles he met Little Richard and later composed songs for him. Jimmy and the band traveled to Chicago and recorded a song on Chess Records called The Walk, which became a dance craze. That led them to the Philadelphia TV show, American Bandstand. There they hooked up with -- and began to tour with -- Frankie Lyman, The Drifters, The Shirelles, Wilbert Harris, Johnnie Watson and Roscoe Garden. After touring, the road brought them to New York, where they established their base. Later, they played in Montreal, Canada and returned to New York. At this point, the band broke up. Three members decided to live in New York: Horace Ace Hall (bass), Johnny Parker (sax), and Lafayette Thomas (guitar). They played at the Theresa Hotel and around the New York area. Later, Horace Ace Hall played and became a bandleader. He played with many musicians, including Don Covay & Good Timers (Mercy, Mercy, later covered by the Rolling Stones, etc) and, of course, Jimi Hendrix. With him, Ace played in two bands, The Lovelites and Curtis Knight and The Squires. After Jimi moved to London, the bands broke up. Soon after, Ace organized and formed his own band Ace King and Queen and played a USO tour in Alaska and the South Pacific area.
In the years that followed, Ace played with various bands and traveled with them around the world.
DITTO was born and raised in Puerto Rico and later moved to New York. Soon after, he played drums in the Six Fleet navy band. With them, he played and traveled throughout Europe. He returned to New York, where he formed a band Ditto and The Lovers. The State Department organized their tour in the South Pacific area, the Caribbean and Europe. After that, he played and toured with Brook Benton (23 top forty hits, including Rainy Night In Georgia); Ben E. King (Stand by Me, etc); Big Maybelle (Candy, etc); Irene Reid; Ruth Brown (Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean, etc.); Don Covay (Mercy, Mercy, later covered by the Rolling Stones, etc.); jazz legends, like King Curtis, Jimmy Forest, Illinois Jacket, Hubert Laws, Arthur Prysock, Jack McDuff, George Benson, and many more. Ditto played with Jimi Hendrix in Curtis Knight and The Squires. As a drummer, among other engagements, Ditto also played in the house band at The Apollo Theater in Harlem for five years.
As such, Ditto has earned the status of a legendary drummer.
MARINO FROST was born and raised in Croatia (Europe), where he spent the first half of his life. After that, he moved to New York, where he has resided ever since. He has been working as a professional live and studio musician since the age of eleven. Although Marino plays many instruments, lead guitar is his primary instrument. He has played various styles of music with more than 300 bands. Marino is also a singer, composer, lyricist, arranger, music producer and sound engineer, as well as the owner of Stardust recording studio located in Queens, New York. With his qualities, attributes and experience, he has been chosen as an adequate replacement for Jimi Hendrix in The Squires. His band mates, Ace and Ditto, among others, call him a modern day Jimi Hendrix.
For years Marino has been working with his team on a comprehensive multimedia project called Mission of Love, which encompasses art, philosophy, and spirituality.
