A New Zealand Adventure (North Island pt. 2) - Taupo, Rotorua, Hobbtion, Wellington
In November 2019, my friend Susy and I did the roadtrip of a lifetime to New Zealand, and these videos give just a glimpse into the amazing 3 weeks we spent there.
Landing back on North Island, we drove up to National Park Village just below the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (which they used for Mt Doom in Lord of the Rings!), which we were going to cross the next day. However the next day there were gale force winds on the mountain top, so no crossings we being permitted that day. In order to make up for this, we spent the day exploring the area around Lake Taupo.
With the plan back on track the next day, we visited the thermal area of Rotorua, including the impressive Lady Knox Geyser and thermal pools, thermal rivers to swim in, and even a nighttime walk through a suspended pathway in redwoods surrounded by funky light shows and art.
For our final whole day in New Zealand, there was only one place to spend it: Hobbiton! We got to do the full tour of the set, and even got a cider and a buffet lunch at the end of it!
Once we left there we finally completed our loop and ended up back in Wellington. For our final dinner in New Zealand, we spent it at the top of the Sky Tower in the 360 restaurant, so we got to see the sun set over the entire of Wellington.
This road trip was beyond amazing, and the only thing i would have changed is that we should have stayed there even longer! I'd highly recommend to anyone to get out there, hire a car and just see it all, you wont be disappointed!

The Whakarewarewa Forest and Blue Lake to finish
In 2018, for the first time ever, the course will be reversed and all runners will reach Lake Tikitapu - or Blue Lake in the afternoon or in the fading evening light. For most of the 100 mile runners, this area will be explored at night-time and glowing headlamps and footfalls in the darkness will be guiding the journey to the finish.
The Blue Lake circuit winds around the water’s edge, offering rolling trails and glimpses of the sparkling blue water beyond the treeline. For the 100 mile runners, this is the last of 8 lakes to be seen on the course.
The final section takes runners amongst the towering redwoods of the Whakarewarewa forest, along the outskirts of Rotorua to the finish-line. The atmosphere at the finish is one of triumph and elation. Some runners have spent the better part of a day making their way here, running across the line to cheering crowds and hugs all around.
This is a journey that will not be forgotten.
