Route 66 in Illinois
The Gemini Giant in Wilmington, IL represents a popular type of roadside advertising from the 1960s known as a “muffler man.” This 30 foot fiberglass statue promotes the Launching Pad restaurant.
Ambler’s Texaco Gas Station in Dwight, IL is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1933 and run by Basil Tubby Ambler for almost 30 years. It closed in 2002 and now serves as the town's Visitor Center.
The Lauterbatch Muffler Man in Springfield, IL was erected in 1962, serving as advertising for a local tire business. It originally held a tire but now holds an American flag.
The Maid Rite Sandwich Shop in Springfield, IL is also on the National Register of Historic Places, famous for their loose-meat (ground beef) sandwiches. The restaurant is built from an old railroad caboose, and the company vehicle is certainly eye-catching.

Lincoln’s Tomb is the final resting place for the president, his wife, and all but one of his children. In front of the tomb is a bronze reproduction of Gutzon Borglum’s marble head of Lincoln (it’s tradition to rub the nose for good luck).
Lincoln Home National Historic Site offers wonderful tours conducted by Park Rangers. Lincoln and his wife lived in the 12-room Greek Revival-style house from 1844 to1861. It is the only home Abraham Lincoln ever owned. Much of the surrounding the neighborhood has been restored to it’s 1860’s appearance.
Great Western Depot is the train station from which Lincoln left for Washington in 1861.
Union Station was built after Lincoln’s time but the grounds include several statues of Lincoln.
The Old State Capitol is where Lincoln served in the Illinois Legislature and gave his famous “House Divided” speech in 1858. Lincoln also served as a lawyer, pleading cases in front of the Supreme Court which also was located in the court house. Before Lincoln was buried, his body lay in state in Representatives Hall.
Lincoln’s Law Offices were located just across the street from the Old State Capitol.
The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum has exhibits ranging from a full-scale replica the log cabin in which Lincoln grew up to a recreation of Ford's Theater, detailing the iconic moments of the President's life.
The new State Capitol was completed in 1888, so well after Lincoln’s time, but it is a beautiful structure with its own rich history.
Saint Louis, MO
Annheuser Busch offers a so-called “Beer Master Tour” with access to many different parts of the vast complex and beer tastings at several points during the brewing process.
The St Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame and Museum has many exhibits documenting the team’s rich history and many star athletes. They let me pose with one of Stan Musial’s actual game-used bats. The museum also has artifacts from the city’s other major league team, the Saint Louis Brown’s, whose manager, Bill Veeck, was notorious for stunts such as sending a midget (Eddie Gaedel) up to the plate whose strike zone was so small that he walked on 4 pitches. There was also an exhibit on the World Tour of Baseball when stars from different teams held exhibition games all around the world in the early 1900’s.
Next door to the museum is Busch Stadium where I went to a game between the Cardinals and the Dodgers. Long time Cardinal David Freese had recently been traded to the Dodgers, and the fans gave him a touching ovation. Clayton Kershaw was pitching for the Dodgers.
The Old Court House is where Dred Scott sued for and won his freedom before the decision was overruled by the Supreme Court, hastening the start of the Civil War.
The Old Cathedral Basilica Of Saint Louis, finished in 1834, is the fourth church built on a site dedicated in 1764. It stands right beside the gateway Arch which can be seen through its windows.
I took the ride up to the top of Gateway Arch which stands beside the Mississippi River.
My visit to Saint Louis ended with a visit to the New Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis. Built between 1907 - 1914, the Cathedral is known for its beautiful mosaics which took nearly 80 years to create using more than 41 million pieces of glass.
THE FINAL (I-)64 MILES [S1(3-14) Ep6]

Route 66 Legacy Lives on in Flagstaff
May 8, 2014 -- NAZ Today's Kyle Benedict reports on the history of Route 66 and its special significance to the growth of Flagstaff. The Main Street of America, as it is sometimes called, has been bypassed by the interstate highway system, but it continues to shape the character of Flagstaff.
Sean Evans from the NAU Cline Library Special Collections department says Route 66 was not just built for transportation. The original designers of the highway also had economic development in mind, and purposely routed it through every small rural town they could.
Joanne Hudson from the Flagstaff Contention and Visitors Bureau says Route 66 continues to affect the Flagstaff economy by drawing in visitors from all over the world.
This year, Kingman's annual Route 66 Festival will be held August 14 through August 17. It will feature collectables and art and bring in visitors from all over the world.
VOA Special English 2013 - Route 66 - Get your kicks on Route 66
This week, we go for a ride through the colorful history of Route 66, a road that has been called The Main Street of America.
The idea for Route 66 started in Oklahoma. Citizens there wanted to link their state with states to the east and west.
Route 66 became the most famous road in America. It passed through the center of many cities and towns. It crossed deserts, mountains, valleys and rivers.
In the 1930s, people suffered through the Great Depression. In Oklahoma, many poor families lost their farms because of dust storms. So they traveled west to California on Route 66 in search of a better life.
Steinbeck wrote: 66 is the path of a people in flight, refugees from dust and shrinking land ... 66 is the mother road, the road of flight.
In real life, people were getting fewer and fewer kicks on Route 66. By 1962, parts of the road were closed because they were in poor condition.
The federal government was building bigger highways. Cars and trucks could travel at higher speeds. People started driving on these new interstate highways instead of the old Route 66.
Finally, in 1985, Route 66 was officially removed from the national highway system.
People have formed groups to save parts of the old 66 and many of the interesting places to eat, stay and see along the way.
Now it is our turn to take a trip on Route 66. Our trip begins in the Midwest, in Chicago, Illinois. Almost 3 million people live there. Chicago is America's third largest city.
From Chicago, the road goes southwest through many small towns in Illinois. 1 of them is Springfield, the home of America's 16th President, Abraham Lincoln.
Now we cross into Missouri. We drive through St. Louis, the city known as the Gateway to the West. More than !300,000 people live there.
There are many natural wonders to see in Missouri. One of the most famous along Route 66 is Meramec Caverns in Stanton.
Inside the cave, visitors see beautifully colored stalagmites and stalactites. These are mineral formations. Stalagmites rise from the floor; stalactites hang from the ceiling.
Long ago, local Indian tribes used the Meramec Caverns for shelter. A French miner named Jacques Renault discovered saltpeter in the caverns in the 1700s. The material was used to produce gunpowder.
Later, the outlaw Jesse James is said to have used the caverns as a hiding place.
From Missouri, our drive takes us for a very short time through the state of Kansas. Then we enter Oklahoma. Oklahoma may well be the heart and soul of Route 66. That is because there are more kilometers of the road in Oklahoma than in any other state.
In Claremore, Oklahoma, a statue honors a famous American, Will Rogers. Will Rogers was born in Claremore. He became a popular actor, radio broadcaster and newspaper writer in the 1920s and 30s.
We pass through many historic towns in Oklahoma. In Oklahoma City, we can visit the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center.
And in Clinton, we can stop at the Route 66 Museum. This official museum tells the complete history of the road and its importance to America.
Now we drive through the northern part of Texas. The area is called the Texas Panhandle. We stop near the city of Amarillo to look at some unusual art that celebrates Route 66. Welcome to Cadillac Ranch.
A Cadillac is a large, costly automobile. Cadillac Ranch has 10 of them half buried in the ground. A wealthy farmer and art collector named Stanley Marsh created Cadillac Ranch to honor America's roads.
Continuing west, we travel through the states of New Mexico and Arizona. We pass through some of the most beautiful country in the Southwest.
Petrified Forest National Park is 1 of the natural wonders of Arizona. Trees that are !1,000,000s of years old have turned to stone in unusual shapes.
North of Route 66 is a desert known for its red and yellow sand and rocks. Its name is the Painted Desert.
We continue on our trip, driving on a winding road up and down the Black Mountains. We arrive at Oatman, Arizona. Long ago, Oatman was a rich gold-mining town. Everyone left the town when the mining ended. Today Oatman still looks like it did in the past.

The Update, Episode 2 Pacific Missouri Mayor Steve Myers
The Update Pacific Missouri Mayor Steve Myers On behalf of the Pacific Board of Aldermen, it is both an honor and a privilege to welcoPhotome you to the City of Pacific’s website. We are proud of our past and excited about our future and through this website, we are pleased to provide you with valuable information about our growing community.
A visitor to Pacific will find a charming Route 66 community nestled in a beautiful setting where the Meramec River winds its way through the eastern Ozark Foothills. Pacific is considered by many to be the “Gateway to the Ozarks” and has a rich railroad and Civil War history dating back to 1852. Blackburn Park in Pacific is home to a Civil War memorial that features a life size replica cannon and descriptive plaques describing the events that occurred here in greater detail.
Additionally, Blackburn Park cannon smallJensen Point is Pacific’s newest old park. Originally ordered to be built in 1938 as part of President Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps program, Jensen Point marks the eastern most point the Confederates reached in their goal to capture the armory in St. Louis. 100 stone steps lead up to a breathtaking view of the Ozark Foothills where you’ll find the monument displaying the tremendous craftsmanship of the CCC. This beautiful park is now open to the public everyday and is located just west of the historic Route 66 Red Cedar Inn that the city has recently acquired and is making plans to renovate into a visitor center, museum and gift shop.
Great things are in store for our community as we have also begun working to revitalize our downtown business district through the Missouri Main Street program. From a business perspective, Pacific has adopted a spirit of partnership and support for our local businesses to help them achieve greater success. Our proximity to Interstate 44, Route 66 and rail service uniquely positions us to serve industry as more businesses look to locate in our welcoming surroundings.
Pacific is home to 169 acres of parkland and with the beautiful Meramec River borJensen Point Park with mumsdering much of our city limits in St. Louis County, Great Rivers Greenway has recently acquired 42 acres of property that is destined to become a first-class public access riverfront park that will someday serve as a trailhead to a 500-mile recreational trail across the entire state of Missouri.
