Exercise DS17 Behind the Scenes Part Three
RAAF WILLIAMTOWN, NSW, AUSTRALIA

Video by Tech. Sgt. Steven Doty
354th Fighter Wing/Public Affairs
As the 18th Aggressor Squadron out of Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, closes out its final days in Australia, we highlight the key attribute of this exercise: joint interoperability. Both the pilots and the maintainers capitalized on this unique environment and the exercise to learn a little bit more about a joint partner nation, the Royal Australian Air Force, and even about themselves. This video is part three of a four-part series.
Pilots with the 18th Aggressor Squadron, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, are working with Royal Australian Air Force Air Warfare Centre instructors to train and prepare RAAF fighter combat instructors, airspace battle managers, fighter intelligence instructors and fighter combat controllers. Exercise Diamond Shield 2017, the second of four Diamond Series exercises conducted by the RAAF Air Warfare Centre, is an Australian Defence Force training activity where high-readiness forces deploy quickly to remote locations in Australia in response to a simulated security threat. The exercise will see members of the ADF Navy, Army and Air Force rapidly deploy to counter a fictitious force posing a threat to Australia's national security in the Kimberley region in North Western Australia.

HMAS Kuttabul (naval base), Sydney.
HMAS Kuttabul is the name given to the administrative centre of the Royal Australian Navy's Fleet Base East, the main naval base on the east coast of Australia at Garden Island in Sydney. The facility is named for the steam ferry HMAS Kuttabul that was sunk by the Japanese in 1942.
Garden Island itself has been host to a naval base since 1856, when the government of New South Wales suggested giving the area over to the Royal Navy as a base for ships serving on the Australia Station. Following the foundation of the Royal Australian Navy in 1911, all naval establishments were given over by the UK to the RAN. However, until 1939, the ownership of Garden Island itself was in dispute, with NSW claiming it as its property. This was solved when the Australian government initially requisitioned the island (together with the naval base) under emergency wartime powers. The government then purchased Garden Island from NSW for £638,000 in 1945.
The Garden Island facility houses the Captain Cook Graving Dock, the largest graving dock in the Southern Hemisphere. The dock was constructed between 1940 and 1945, by filling in the area between Garden Island and Potts Point. The dock and associated dockyard are operated under lease by Australian Defence Industries Limited The northern tip of Garden Island is now open to the public, accessible only by ferry. The area features the Navy Heritage Centre, opened in 2004, and graffiti dating to the First Fleet in 1788.
From its foundation until the establishment of the Two Ocean Policy and commissioning of HMAS Stirling in 1978, Kuttabul was the RAN's main naval base. With the establishment of two main bases, Kuttabul and Garden Island took on the additional designation of Fleet Base East.

The story begins almost seven decades ago and had humble beginnings. It was inspired by a simple show called 'Something About a Soldier' performed in 1949 at the Ross Bandstand. The bandstand is still there, in Princes Street Gardens just below the Castle. Make sure to look out for it when you visit. Lieutenant Colonel George Malcolm was the first Producer of The Edinburgh Tattoo. He aimed to bring the Army's contribution to the Edinburgh International Festival to life. From a modest event in a park to today’s global showcase at the Castle.
HMAS Darwin Aerial Drone Video Sydney Harbour
hoverscape.com.au
It may have began as a wet and foggy morning over Sydney Harbour, however nothing was going to stop the HMAS Darwin from making her grand arrival back to Garden Island this morning after 7 months at sea. As if on cue, the low cloud cleared just in time to capture stunning aerial drone imagery of the naval frigate berthing.
Hoverscape co-ordinated closely with the crew on-board to organise the safe operation our drones in close proximity to the warship, allowing us to capture unique aerial photographs and video of her arrival through Sydney Harbour
HMAS Darwin has been on a 7 month anti-piracy and anti-terrorism mission in the Middle East, aiming to cut finance to terrorist groups by intercepting weapons and drugs.

ABANDONED CONVICT ISLAND IN SYDNEY
In Sydney Harbour lies the abandoned Cockatoo Island that employed convicts in the 1800's and later served additional purposes as a girl's reformatory known as 'Biloela' - which holds a haunting history. And most recently the island was used as a shipyard. However now Cockatoo Island is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We tour the island using the free Ghosts of Biloela audio tour..
