St Ives Feast - 8th February 2010
St Ives Cornwall - Feast Day - 8th February 2010.
Following an ancient tradition the mayor hurls the Silver Ball from the wall of St Ives Parish Church.
Local children then compete to get hold of the ball. Whoever returns the ball to the mayor at midday is rewarded with a silver coin.
In between The Western Hunt meet in Royal Square to take a stirrup cup from the mayor.
Finally - town councillors assemble on the balcony at St Ives Guildhall to throw pennies to the kids.
A great tradition and a great day.
Places to see in ( Lee on the Solent - UK )
Places to see in ( Lee on the Solent - UK )
Lee-on-the-Solent, often referred to as Lee-on-Solent, is a small seaside district within the Borough of Gosport in Hampshire, England about five miles west of Portsmouth. The area is located on the coast of the Solent. It is primarily a residential area, with an upsurge of mostly local visitors in summer, but is well known as the former home to the Royal Naval Air Station HMS Daedalus (renamed as HMS Ariel from 1959 to 1965).
The district gained its name in the 19th century, during attempts to develop the area into a seaside resort. The area had been referenced long before this, referred to as Lee and numerous variations, including Lebritan. Early impetus for the district's development came from Charles Edmund Newton Robinson, who persuaded his father, John Charles Robinson, art curator and collector, to fund the buying of land.
Lee-on-the Solent has had a long association with aviation. Seaplane trials took place at Lee-on-the-Solent as early as 1915. A base for seaplane training was established in 1917 on the former RNAS Lee-on-Solent, formerly HMS Daedalus, site.
In 1935 the Lee Tower complex was built on the seafront next to the old pier and railway station. It was designed by architects Yates, Cook & Derbyshire, and comprised a white v-shaped Art Deco building with a 120-foot (37 m) tower. The complex housed a cinema, ballroom and restaurant, as well as a viewing platform at the tower's peak. The complex was demolished in 1971 by Gosport Borough Council, with its land now used for the promenade and remembrance gardens.
The views out to sea from the cliffs at Marine Parade are forever changing and are always interesting. From a vantage point on the grassy banks, it is possible to see shipping movements of large container ships and cruisers into Southampton and Portsmouth, sailing boats, ferries and of course the backdrop of the Isle of Wight. The seafront on Marine Parade East is where the Club House is situated for the Lee on the Solent Sailing Club LOSSC.
At the signal station, where the racing starts and finishes can be found a smaller galley that can provide light snacks and soft drinks for the people involved in racing or training of adults and youngsters at the weekend. It is a RYA accredited Sailing School and is open to visitors and day sailors alike. Boats can be hired if you would like to get on the water during hot summers.
On Marine Parade West main sea front stands the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's Lee-on-Solent Memorial erected to commemorate the 1,926 men of the Fleet Air Arm who died in various parts of the world in World War II and have no known grave.
( Lee on the Solent - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Lee on the Solent . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Lee on the Solent - UK

Torpoint,Plymouth UK,Torpoint Beach
HISTORY OF TORPOINT
The first mention of Torpoint in known records is on an old print of the harbour dated 1734. There are records dated 1745 of masons and carpenters from Torpoint repairing Antony church. Torpoint developed apace after 1750 due to the Dockyard. Expansion was driven by the need to expand the Navy. Ship building and repair required workers from the Torpoint side of the river as Plymouth at that time was a difficult place to reach directly from the Dockyard and housing was limited nearby. Other factors which speeded the development of Torpoint were the construction of Lime Kilns, wharf, a warehouse and a quay. By 1774 as well as Lime Kilns there were a ropewalk, shops and a place for spinning.
The next ten years saw even more development. Warehouses had been built and ships came in from foreign countries with their goods. Goods to and from East Cornwall were more easily shipped from the Torpoint side of the river rather than making the journey from Plymouth via Gunnislake. This development however was stopped by the customs and excise because they were not able to police this trade sufficiently.
Torpoint began to develop into a large village or small town. Fore Street had been constructed using stone from a quarry situated where Wesley Court now stands, hence the name Quarry Street.
New roads improved the local infrastructure and access to Torpoint improved with the construction of a Turnpike from Liskeard to “Tar Point Passage” going via Sheviock where a toll house was located. There was an obvious need for a reliable ferry and July 1791 saw the introduction of a regular ferry service across the Tamar to the Dockyard. The first ferries were either horse boats or foot boats. The horse boats for transporting horses, cattle and coaches were rather like catamarans for stability. The foot boats were for passengers and were rowed or sometimes sailed across.
The first steam ferry running on chains was introduced in 1834 by James Rendell who had designed ferries at Dartmouth. The simple design is still the basis of the modern ferries and has been very successful.
Notable dates around this time were:
1832 A severe outbreak of cholera in the summer.
1834 The first Rendell chain ferry.
1839 The building of the workhouse in Marine Drive
1857 The Cornwall constabulary took up duties in Torpoint.
1861 First Police Station.
1871 Weslyan School opened.
1872 Torpoint became a separate parish from Antony village.
1873 Gas lighting introduced in some buildings and shops.
1883 A huge typhoid epidemic struck the town.
1885 Another typhoid epidemic.
1894 Torpoint Parish Council first formed with Mr Joseph Shepheard as its Chairman.
1904 Town upgraded to Urban District.
1906 In May the population was estimated to be 4,200 with 704 houses.
The quality of education was boosted in 1910 with the opening of a boy’s school in Albion Road with 164 boys being admitted. A week later Macey Street was opened as a girls school with 208 girls enrolled.
Very little industry was started during this time as the Dockyard attracted many Torpoint workers and provided employment. During the Great War there were few records of events but the Dockyard was no doubt at full stretch and local records show that many local men served in the forces.
Interesting events which occurred between the wars included:
1920 First cinema opened in Torpoint
1920 Ferry ownership transferred to Cornwall County Council.
1921 Oil depot came into service at Thankes.
1928 Horson Cemetery opened.
1930 Construction started for another ferry next to the first.
1933 The Joan of Arc Catholic church opened.
1933 The council purchased a chapel in York road as Council Hall and Offices.
1937 Torpoint Urban District Council Offices opened by wife of Chairman, Mrs Light.
The start of World War II heralded a great expansion of the area. H.M.S Raleigh was commissioned in February 1940 and H.M.S. F

Commemorating the 79th anniversary of the Battle of Britian
Over the weekend of Friday 13 September to Sunday 15 September 2019, the Australian Defence Force joined together with the Royal Australian Air Force Association in Hobart to mark the 79th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
A number of commemorative events were held to pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of those Australians and members of allied Forces who took part in the Battle.
Lest we forget.
Pageantry Lo
This splendid overview of the country's post-war pageantry includes newsreel of the
day when Princess Elizabeth married her Prince, the funeral of her father, King George VI, her accession to the throne and the Coronation of 1953. By seeing the newsreel images shown in cinemas across the country and hearing the music that marked these occasions, we come close to appreciating the trust and respect that once held society together.

1899 Knights in Armour - Exhibition with Lances - Paris France
Film dated: June 13 1899
Location: Garden of the Palais-Royal – Paris - France
In the background is the restaurant the Grand Véfour.
The view represents a reconstruction of a tournament in the Middle Ages.
Two knights in armour compete with lances. However, they are not jousting with lances as it was done in the middle ages. Neither has a shield. The goal of the competition seems to be, the disarming of your opponent’s lance. This upload of the film includes the normal speed version and a slow-motion version.
Anonymous (2011) trailer
Directed by Roland Emmerich
Written by John Orloff based on the Oxfordian theory of Shakespeare authorship
Starring Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Xavier Samuel, Sebastian Armesto, Rafe Spall, Edward Hogg, Jamie Campbell Bower, Derek Jacobi,...
Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds... who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage...

Palentines Day
Nicola, Rachel and Robyn went from Rachel's house, to St Ives (Cambridgeshire), to Huntingdon, to Tescos, to Cineworld, to Tescos, and back to Needingworth.
We call this day Palentines Day. We saw the film Valentines Day, and due to law, we do not have any footage of the actual film.
Robyn actually did not star in this film, however Rachel and Nicola did.
This was filmed in St Ives Bus Station, Cinworld Huntingdon, McDonalds in Huntingdon The path that leads to Tescos in Huntingdon and Tescos in Huntingdon. We got quite a few weird looks!
Hope you enjoy the show!
Home Sweet Home Some Novelties (1929)
Just outside Harlow, Essex, we came across one of the quaintest and oldest houses in the country...over 5 centuries old.
M/S of a beautiful and unusual thatched house with a circular roof. People walk in front of the house, one woman pushes a pram. Just like one of those Fairy houses you read about. M/S of man sitting at a table in the garden, his wife brings him a cup of tea. Short segment, incomplete.

torquay things to do
If you have a head for heights, then head for the big wheel over by Torquay harbour. The Torquay big wheel (as it’s known) sits at the heart of Torquay and can be seen towering above Torquay harbour. If you are looking for a bird’s eye views of Torquay and the surrounding area then the big wheel is worth a visit. It’s higher than Nelsons column in London, with glass gondolas that give you a 360 view.
