Plymouth Royal Citadel & Madeira Road
The Royal Citadel in Plymouth, was built in the late 1660s to the design of Sir Bernard de Gomme. It is at the eastern end of Plymouth Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound, and encompasses the site of the earlier fort that had been built in the time of Sir Francis Drake.
A prominent landmark on the Hoe is Smeaton's Tower. This is the upper portion of John Smeaton's Eddystone Lighthouse, which was originally built on the Eddystone Rocks (22.5 km south) in 1759. It was dismantled in 1877 and moved, stone by stone, to the Hoe where it was re-erected.[10]
Smeaton's Tower overlooks Tinside Pool, an unusual 1930s outdoor lido which sits upon the limestone shoreline at the base of the cliff. Most of the works to create the swimming areas and Madeira Road were carried out to make work for the local unemployed during the Depression.

A working military base since its origins in the 17th century, the citadel is home to 29 Commando Regiment, Royal Artillery. The ramparts still boast original canons, with stunning views over Plymouth Sound.

Plymouth is a port city in Devon, southwest England. It’s known for its maritime heritage and historic Barbican district with narrow, cobbled streets. Sutton Harbour is home to the National Marine Aquarium, where sharks and rays glide in a deep tank. Also in the harbour are several marinas and a fish market, the Plymouth Fisheries. The Mayflower Steps are where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for the New World in 1620.
Plymouth is a city on the south coast of Devon, England, about 37 miles (60 km) south-west of Exeter and 190 miles (310 km) west-south-west of London, between the mouths of the rivers Plym to the east and Tamar to the west where they join Plymouth Sound to form the boundary with Cornwall.
Plymouth lies between the River Plym to the east and the River Tamar to the west; both rivers flow into the natural harbour of Plymouth Sound. Plymouth is home to Plymouth Argyle F.C., who play in the fourth tier of English football league known as Football League Two. Commanding officer forced to abseil off Citadel
Onlookers would have been excused for thinking they were witnessing the production of a scene from a film during events on the Hoe.
But yesterday's spectacle was in fact part of a traditional send-off for 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery's departing Commanding Officer.
Lieutenant Colonel Neil Wilson has served on and off at the Royal Citadel-based regiment since 1992.

13 England Plymouth
Plymouth is on the south coast of Devon, England at the mouths of the rivers Plym to the east and Tamar to the west where they join Plymouth Sound. In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers departed Plymouth for the New World, The United States of America. While in Plymouth, we saw the Royal Citadel, the red and white Smeaton's Lighthouse Tower, Plymouth Sound and Breakwater, the National Armada memorial, the Naval War Memorial, The Plymouth Eye, Sir Francis Drake Statue, The Barbican and Plymouth Hoe and Hoe Foreshore area. We also saw the Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrim Fathers left England aboard the Mayflower before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to settle in North America on September 6, 1620. The steps today consist of a commemorative portico and a small platform over the water with a brushed steel rail and the steps. We took a Plymouth Harbor Cruise up the River Tamar to Saltash.

TSW News / Gus Honeybun's Magic Birthdays / continuity: Saturday 11th July 1992
A Saturday teatime sequence which, if anything, highlights just how much announcers in certain ITV regions had to handle even in a short space of time.
Dinah Lawley is on duty, first to trail ''the rabbit'' and introduce a cartoon from Gus' own continuity set.
Then she's out of vision to announce ITN's early evening news but five minutes later, she's back to bring us the latest from the TSW newsroom...
Headlines:
- Plymouth man charged with attempted murder of policewoman
- Oil spill threatens Devon coastline
- Report recommends major cutbacks at Portland naval base
- Four-man powerboat smashes UK record
- Caradon council told to compensate home owners after vicarage built
- Vintage cars retrace Great Western Railway route
- Remote railway station to reopen after canine troubles
- Plymouth Royal Citadel's reoccupied after refurbishment
Ruth Langsford (usually TSW's main weekend announcer) trails Saturday night's entertainment - spot the spelling mistake - before Dinah's back yet again with Gus and more than a few magic buttons...or are they just fades to black?
