Where it all Began - Kingston, Ontario
Founded in 1673, and named Canada's first capitol in 1841 (yup that's right, our nation's first capitol was in Kingston, not Ottawa!), Kingston still retains some of that old-world charm but mixes it with a bustle of activity which makes it one of the greatest cities in Canada.
Kingston is known for its historic properties, as reflected in the city's motto where history and innovation thrive. The municipality has nearly 700 properties listed in the heritage register, 20 National Historic Sites and in 2007, the Rideau Canal, along with the fortifications at Kingston, was designated a World Heritage Site, one of only 15 such sites in Canada. All these places are responsible for the historic and architectural face of the city but it's the cities two universities, Queen's University and the Royal Military College of Canada (Canada's only military university), that give the place it's energy, enthusiasm and vigor! Queens University currently has an enrollment of more than 13,000 undergraduate and 4,000 graduate students, which means there is no shortage of nightlife in the city! But despite all this partying, Kingston still has the most PhD's per capita of any city in Canada.
The city is also famous for its fresh-water sailing, and hosted the sailing events for the 1976 Summer Olympics. Since 1972, Kingston has hosted more than 40 World and Olympic sailing championships. And on another important sporting note Kingston lays claim to being the birthplace of ice hockey!
Kingston is in the heart of Canada located midway between Toronto and Montreal. Paired up with a trip to one of Canada's other great cities or just as a destination onto itself Kingston is a great city to explore and enjoy.
There is a reason Kingston is still the Heartbeat of Canada.

Ep. 208 - Ontario's Fort Henry
Fort Henry was built during the War of 1812 in Ontario, Canada. The fort was constructed to protect the nearby Point Henry because of its proximity to the Royal Naval Dockyards. The fort that stands today is not the original. It was fortified later on to protect the waterways even more thoroughly. Today, it is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and a living museum. There are more than just the living here. The fort also seems to harbor spirits from the past. Ghost tours are hosted and dozens of people have claimed to have had paranormal experiences. Join us and our listener Sarah Norton as we share the history and hauntings of Ontario's Fort Henry. The Moment in Oddity was suggested by listener Melissa Antonelli and features the Swinging Sailor and This Month in History features Robert Kennedy shot and killed.

100 Paces (excerpt)
At the initial site visit to the National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks, attention was drawn to the dynamic acoustics and the architecture of Clarke Square (formally known as Palatine Square).
This square seemed to Taylor to be a natural amphitheatre for a sound based work. However the real starting point for the work was the original hand painted pace markings located on the walls on both sides of Clarke Square, a historical legacy from a time when the British Army occupied the barracks. These pace markings numbered 0-100 were used to assist army recruits whilst learning drill movements. Sean Taylor reflected on a number of other elements that shaped the work, the weight of the historical legacy of Anglo/Irish conflicts, as well as the changing nature of this relationship and the traditional perception of soldiers as professionally trained killers.
There was a realisation that the work needed voices, lots of voices, these voices also had to able to march, sing and drill at the same time. It had to be performed by soldiers, lots of soldiers. The next step in the process was to approach the Defence Forces with an idea to work with a group of soldiers. After submitting a proposal, permission to work with army personnel was granted by Lt. General Jim Sreenan, Chief of Staff, Irish Defence Forces in August 2006.
In August 2006 Taylor was assigned to work with a company of soldiers from the Command Brigade Training Centre, at Collins Barracks in Cork. Over a five month period (August to December 2006) he worked collaboratively together choreographing and developing the work on the parade ground in Collins Barracks Cork. In January 2007 he shot the video of 100 PACES in Clarke Square in the National Museum at Collins Barracks, Dublin. In February they presented three publicly advertised performances of 100 PACES in the Museum.

Walter (Walt) Conrad, Volunterr Interpreter, Canadian War Museum in Ottawa
I met Walter (Walt) at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa acting as a volunteer interpreter. I was so taken by his stories, I thought I would share a little bit of his history.
Walt was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, in 1929, and graduated from Prince of Wales College, Charlottetown, in 1949. He enlisted in the Reserve Army during this period, obtaining his commission in 1948. He resigned his commission in 1949 when he entered the Royal Military College, Kingston with a Dominion Scholarship. Her graduated from RMS in 1953 with a BA (Honours History) and was posted to “A” Squadron of Lord Strathcona’s Horse in Korea. After six months in tanks, three months commanding a Royal Canadian Regiment platoon, and finally three months as a Brigade Liaison Officer, he returned to Canada and rejoined his regiment.
Postings in many parts of Canada followed, including two years in Fort Churchill during the International Geophysics Year, 1958-60. From 1961 to 1963 he attended the Canadian Army Staff College in Kingston. Later, having transferred to the Royal Canadian Dragoons, he commanded its Recce Squadron in Cyprus (1965-66), followed by a period of regimental duties, ending as Regimental Second-in-Command. He resigned from the army in 1969 and joined the Federal Department of Transport in Ottawa, finally retiring in 1984 as Senior Policy Advisor, Atlantic Region.
He has enjoyed singing and acting with the Capital City Chorus (since 1979), the Savoy Society of Ottawa (since 1986), and with the Orpheus Musical Theatre (since1987). He has also done voice-overs for the War Amps, the Canadian Museum of Civilisation, television and radio. He is on the executive of the Korean Veterans’ Association and has been a Friend of the Canadian War Museum at Vimy House (since 1995) and in the new CWM since it opened in 2005, acting as a volunteer interpreter.
