215th Anniversary of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium
215th Anniversary of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium
with the support of Become A Friend and the whole team of the RMFAB
In 2016 the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (RMFAB) celebrated their 215 years of existence. During the festive anniversary-day, 6,852 visitors rushed to the RMFAB, three times more than on a usual Sunday; a true record!
All the teams of the institution as well as the Friends’ association of the Museum were mobilized to make this anniversary unforgettable.
In addition to free access to the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions, visitors were able to follow guided tours and participate in animations all throughout the museum rooms (concerts, improvisation games, screenings of archive material, drawing workshops, etc.). The discovery of the backstage of the museum – with its reserves and restoration workshops – were especially appreciated by the lucky ones who had reserved their place in advance. In total, over 40 activities took place that day.
For the RMFAB, which embody a history whose roots extend beyond the creation of Belgium, it was also an opportunity to recall their attachment to the fundamental values of culture, tolerance and openness to all.
This event, which attracted many foreign visitors, contributes to the international image of Belgium. Moreover, it also brings the Belgian citizen closer to its own patrimony, whose richness is sometimes underestimated.
The many positive comments and looks of amazement certainly do encourage the Museums to repeat this experience in the future.
THANKS FOR SHARING THIS SPECIAL MOMENT WITH US!

Constantine Meunier, retrospective exhibition of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium
Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) is a 19th century Belgian realist painter and sculptor who is widely known for introducing industrial workers, dockers and miners, into the visual arts as icons of modernity. His view of man and the world is compassionate, committed and inseparable from the industrial, social and political developments of his day.
The retrospective exhibition of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium is the first of its kind since 1909 and highlights lesser known aspects of his work. Portraying his career, which reflects the major changes in Belgian fine arts in the second half of the 19th century, the exhibition pays particular attention to the paintings from the early years. Among these works, which until now have been insufficiently studied, are the following: historical, social, and religious scenes that foreshadow his later artistic creations. In addition to a wide choice of paintings and bronze sculptures, a selection of drawings, sketches and studies will be on display.
