Now in the Museum of London: unusual hammered? Frederick Germany?
Some very interesting stuff sent to me by Cromwell13649:
Hi Ringo What part of the country are you ? Might be able to help on the German coin ,does it have a date ? The English civil war did not only have English fighting in it ,for example King Charles 1st was helped by his cousin Prince Rupert who brought an army with him and guess where from ? Germany !!! It might be that your find might have belonged to one of the German mercenaries that came over with Prince Rupert. I can do some research for you when I know where your at. Geoff
as well as the Royalists having mercenaries so did Parliament Read This In the early years of the war, Parliament lost popular support through employing brutal foreign mercenaries and soldiers of fortune. Heavy resentment against the high level of pillage, looting and rape by foreign mercenaries -- the worst offenders were probably the Germanic and Bohemian buccaneers who fought for the Puritans.
Part 2 Mark Stoyle's[1] ethnic analysis is very fine, not just in the areas one might expect, relating to Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Cornwall, but in his careful winnowing of the contemporary sources that throws up combatants hailing from France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Scandinavia, Poland, Spain, the Balkans and even Iraq (or Mesopotamia as it then was). Stoyle admits that the number- crunching and quantification beloved of a certain kind of historian will always elude the student of foreign mercenaries in the English Civil War, but he clearly establishes that the racial composition of the combatants is an unjustly neglected area and that the English Civil War was in part an expression of English chauvinism, as much to do with ethnicity and national identity as religion or economics art

Haunting Inglesham Church, St John The Baptist, Near Lechlade
This is isolated Church has a strangely haunting atmosphere. It is currently (August 2012) under restoration with the intention of preserving the murals. Well worth a visit. Inglesham itself is today just a hamlet with no shops or pub. The River Thames is just behind the church. The church is no longer consecrated but is maintained. Would have been a great choice as film location for A Month in the Country
