Hi, my name is Steve and I am here to encourage you to get outdoors and establish a connection with nature. The one thing I like to do most of all, is to sit back and take in nature. To look at the birds, listen to their singing, go hiking and camping and sometimes just being alone with nature. This is special to me. So, I want to share my experiences outdoors with you in hope to encourage you to get outdoors and do the same, even if it is in your own backyard.

ABOUT MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK IN COLORADO
Mesa Verde National Park (Spanish for green tableland) was established to preserve archaeological sites built by the Ancestral Puebloans who inhabited Mesa Verde for more than 700 years (550 A.D. to 1300 A.D.). Currently Mesa Verde has over 4,700 archaeological sites including 600 cliff dwellings and the mesa top sites of pithouses, pueblos, masonry towers, and farming structure, with many more yet to be discovered. These sites are some of the most notable and best preserved ruins in the United States. For the first six centuries, they primarily lived on the mesa tops. It was not until the final 75 to 100 years that they constructed and lived in the cliff dwellings for which Mesa Verde is best known.
Mesa Verde National Park offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans, a group of people living in the Four Corners region who chose Mesa Verde for their home. For more than 700 years they and their descendants lived and flourished in this region, eventually building elaborate stone communities in the sheltered alcoves of the canyon walls. Then, in the late A.D. 1200s, in the span of a generation or two, they left their homes and moved away.
Five of the most impressive cliff dwelling sites include:
• Balcony House – is reachable by climbing a 32-foot ladder and crawling through a short tunnel.
• Cliff Palace – has more than 150 rooms occupying a deep alcove beneath a canyon rim.
• Long House - was excavated between 1959 and 1961 as part of the Wetherill Mesa Archeological Project.
• Spruce Tree House - is the best preserved cliff dwelling in all of Mesa Verde National Park.
• Step House - shows evidence of two occupations taking place in one location.
Cliff dwelling tours vary from independent self-guided tours to ranger-led walking tours. Comprehensive, interpretive, half-day guided bus tours feature a variety of sites, including Cliff Palace.
That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here!

The Mesa Verde mystery
Seven centuries ago, an entire society performed one of the greatest vanishing acts in human history when they fled their homes in the American Southwest. Archaeologists are trying to work out why they left.

Mesa Verde National Park is a U.S. National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site Located in the area known as the Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah meet, Mesa Verde is the only national park in the U.S. devoted exclusively to archaeology. One glance at the intricately constructed multistorey homes in the rocky cliffs shows why. With close to 4,000 known archaeological sites, it’s the largest such preserve in the United States. Mesa Verde is best known for cliff dwellings, which are structures built within caves and under outcroppings in cliffs — including Cliff Palace, thought to be the largest cliff dwelling in North America. The Spanish term Mesa Verde translates into English as green table. It is considered to contain some of the most notable and best preserved archaeological sites. The members of the Ancestral Pueblo culture formerly known by the name Navajo Anasazi, which was developed in this place between 6th to the 12th century, created astounding masonry buildings in alcoves in the canyon walls. Storage rooms and kivas, circular underground chambers, accompanied the living quarters. Many of the alcoves face south, allowing them to capture precious sunlight in winter and avoid the summer glare. Residents grew corn, beans and squash, using dry-land farming techniques and left-behind pottery painted with delicate geometric designs.
The exceptional archaeological sites of the Mesa Verde landscape provide eloquent testimony to the ancient cultural traditions of Native American tribes. They represent a graphic link between the past and present ways of life of the Puebloan Peoples of the American south-west. The area was declared a park in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt to protect some of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in the world, or as he said, preserve the works of man. It is the only cultural National Park set aside by the National Park System. It occupies 81.4 square miles or 211 square kilometer near the Four Corners and features numerous ruins of homes and villages built by the Ancient Pueblo peoples, sometimes called the Anasazi. The six-mile Mesa Top Loop Road passes a number of interesting points and easily accessible, including pithouses (covered dwellings partially dug into the ground) and panoramic views.
The Anasazi inhabited Mesa Verde between 600 to 1300, though there is evidence they left before the start of the 15th century. They were mainly subsistence farmers, growing crops on nearby mesas. Their primary crop was corn, the major part of their diet. Men were also hunters, which further increased their food supply. The women of the Anasazi are famous for their elegant basket weaving. Anasazi pottery is as famous as their baskets; their artifacts are highly prized. The Anasazi kept no written records. By the year 750 the people were building mesa-top villages made of adobe. In the late 1190s they began to build the cliff dwellings for which Mesa Verde is famous.

President Theodore Roosevelt on June 29, 1906, set aside Mesa Verde National Park in southwestern Colorado. This land, inhabited by Ancestral Puebloans for over 700 years, included the most complete and extensive concentration of prehistoric cliff dwellings in the United States. Today, the park protects over 4,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. In fact, these sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States.
The Native Americans first settled on the Colorado Plateau and farmed the mesas. Life was hard in the arid climate, boasting warm summers, cold winters, and limited rainfall. They lived in various settlements above ground until AD 1100, when they started constructing the massive cliff dwellings.
Many have thought that the Ancestral Puebloans retreated to the cliff dwellings to hide from aggressors, but archeological evidence does not support that theory. In fact, the entire region lived in harmony. The cliff dwellings do offer better protection from the elements than the mesa-top sites, which may be one reason we see so many similar dwellings across the southwest.
Between AD 1200 and 1400, there was a mass exodus from the region. To this date, we still do not know why. Perhaps the climate changed significantly, eliminating the ability to farm on the mesa. What do we know, is that their descendants live on in modern tribes residing in the Rio Grande river valley in New Mexico, the Ute in Colorado, and the Hopi in Arizona.
Each year, new dwellings are continued to be uncovered, allowing researchers to peer deeper and deeper into the past. It is this continued effort that has led to the decade old change in name from Anasazi to Ancestral Puebloan to reflect the people who lived here.
When traveling in the Southwest, there are many must-see National Parks,. This is one of them. The fact that you can still walk the grounds and experience the cliff dwellings from within, make it not only a wondrous educational opportunity, but an experiential one as well. The park is open year-round and worth spending at least three days exploring its history.

Over 700 years in the making, Mesa Verde is one of our favorite National Parks and one of the most unique destinations in the State of Colorado offering history, adventure and beauty like none other. On June 29, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt established Mesa Verde National Park to preserve the works of man, the first national park of its kind. Today, the continued preservation of both cultural and natural resources is what keeps this treasure alive.
Mesa Verde has over 4,700 archaeological sites including 600 cliff dwellings and the mesa top sites of pithouses, pueblos, masonry towers, and farming structures, with many more yet to be revealed. These sites are some of the most notable and best-preserved dwellings in the United States.
Mesa Verde National Park offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans. Then, in the late A.D. 1200s, in the span of a generation or two, they left their homes and moved away.
The cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde are some of the most notable and best-preserved ruins in the North American continent. Sometime during the late 1190s, after primarily living on the mesa top for 600 years, many Ancestral Puebloans began living in pueblos they built beneath the overhanging cliffs. The structures ranged in size from one-room storage units to villages of more than 150 rooms. While still farming the mesa tops, they continued to reside in the alcoves, repairing, remodeling, and constructing new rooms for nearly a century. By the late 1270s, the population began migrating south into present-day New Mexico and Arizona. By 1300, the Ancestral Puebloan occupation of Mesa Verde ended.
Mesa Verde is a discovery of wonder and it is a very popular destination in South West Colorado and we hope this destination guide will inspire you to visit, but also give you some tips on enjoying your stay.
Mesa Verde National Park is famous for the Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings constructed within its cliff alcoves. A trip to Mesa Verde would not be complete without a visit to one of these culturally significant sites. While the park is always open, many services and tours have seasonal dates of operation. Lodging, dining and tours all operate on their own schedule and we will provide further details at the end of this destination guide.
There is so much to do and see in Mesa Verde National Park, we don't want you to miss out on anything! Whether you stay in a comfortable guest room in Far View Lodge, or camp in your personal RV or tent in Morefield Campground, or simply go for a drive along its scenic parkway you will be sure to have a memorable experience. The views are spectacular, historic and simply unforgettable.
Tour of Mesa Verde's Cliff Dwelling
It is important to either purchase tickets a day ahead of time at the park or online or very early in the morning. Tours sell out very fast and a lot of tourists didn't even know the only way to see the major sites at Mesa Verde is with a park ranger guide. And the best part of your experience to Mesa Verde will be on one of these guided tours. You will not only be well educated and entertained, you will experience Mesa Verde up-close and personal when you descend down into one of the many cliff dwellings. When you first get to the park entrance you will need to pay for admission. It is only between $15 to $25 per vehicle, depending on the season. This will allow you to travel the 40 miles of roadway, hike, and experience the upper portions of the park which include a museum. Once inside the first thing you want to do if you have not done so already is book your tour. We chose to visit Balcony House, a medium sized cliff dwelling that was the most adventurous. Within 15 minutes of arrival most of the tours throughout the day were already booked with popular ones like Cliff Palace sold out immediately. Our tour was for 11am and we had plenty of time to drive leisurely to all the mesa top sites and enjoy the on site museum. We also managed to squeeze in a mini hike along a cliff top trail before arriving in the designated meeting point for the Balcony House Tour.
