Russia: Book worms rejoice as sumptuous and VERY pricey library opens in St. Petersburg
Wealthy bookworms have a treat in store if they were willing to make the journey to St. Petersburg where one could be one of the world’s most expensive libraries opened.
The exclusive interior of Book Capella was captured on Monday, with footage showing the painstakingly decorated furnishings, tapestries and stained glass. In such surroundings for a fee of 7,000 roubles (€113) for a single session you can read some of the more than 5,000 carefully selected volumes of Russian authors of 16th to the early 20th centuries.
The high admission fee is justified according to the administration since all the items in the library are precious in their own right though not originals. Each volume is hand made using expensive paper and leather bindings with gold lettering and many are available for sale and in great demand from collectors.
SOT Yuri Shestakov, CEO, Alfaret Publishing House (Russian): We thought that a format of chapel would better suit these unique books, so we wanted a visitor to have a chance to work with the books in the atmosphere of seclusion, in the atmosphere of some sacramental communication with these great books. Hence we chose the word 'chapel' and we tried decorate the interior accordingly.

Ancient Jewish Library Welcomed to New Home in Moscow
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Moscow's Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre as an important collection of ancient Jewish books, the Schneerson library, arrived on Thursday. The President familiarised himself with the most valuable parts of the collection, which contains some 12,000 books and 50,000 rare documents dating from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century.
The transfer follows years of debate with the New York City based Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic community who demand the return of the library. The movement argues they are the right owners of the books, as the author of the collection, Schneerson, headed the organisation after moving to the United States. However the transfer of the Schneerson library was welcomed by the Chief Rabbi of Russia, Berl Lazar, who called it a big day for Russian Jews.
Russia has maintained that it will keep the collection, saying that it is a state property and part of Russian culture. The matter got into the media spotlight in January after a US judge ordered Russia to pay $50,000 (€37,000) per day until it returns the library. The decision to move the collection to Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre was proposed by Putin himself this year during a meeting of the Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations.
Moscow's Jewish Museum and Centre of Tolerance was opened in November 2012, with Israeli President Shimon Peres travelling to Moscow for its inauguration. It features several interactive displays regarding the Jewish peoples' long and tumultuous place in Russian history. Now home to the the Schneerson library collection, the museum's new library department operates as a part of the Russian State Library.

Besøg fra Russia State Library for Young Adults
I juli måned fik biblioteket besøg fra Russia State Library for Young Adults.

STORYLINE:
US First Lady Laura Bush won giggles and shy smiles on her first trip to Russia on Friday, as she read a popular American story and passed out pictures of her pet dog, Barney, to a group of Russian school children.
In contrast to her solo European tour, Bush is following a more traditional First Lady's schedule in Russia, in keeping with the low profile of President Vladimir Putin's wife, who rarely carries out solo engagements.
Bush joined Lyudmila Putin on Friday morning for a quick visit to the country's premier Russian art museum, the Tretyakov Gallery.
After exchanging two kisses outside the gallery, the First Ladies viewed some of its famous portraits and icons.
They then headed to the Russia State Children's Library, which houses a copy of every children's book printed in Russian.
The library's director gave Bush a quick history of the library and then led the First Lady into a brightly-painted reading
room to read a story to a group of excited and nervous children.
Some were dressed up specially for the event, wearing suits and ties.
Bush read Robert McCloskey's Make Way for the Ducklings, pausing after ever page while it was translated into Russian for the children.
Some of the names in the tale about a duck family trying to find somewhere traffic-free to live didn't need
translation though and had the children giggling before the translator even started.
When Bush finished the book, she presented it as a gift to the library.
The US first lady then handed out postcards of one of her dogs, Barney.

Russia - Lubavitch Religious Children's Camp
T/I:
A special Jewish summer camp, held in a former camp for young
communists 50 miles outside Moscow in the town of Ruza, aims to
bring young Russian Jews closer to their religion, tradition and
heritage. Under the guidance of American and Israeli counsellors, the children in the Ruza camp learned Hebrew, studied Torah and learned many of the rules and guidelines for religious observance and social conduct. On Friday (25/8), they showed how they had been taught to make their bunks extra-clean for the beginning of the Sabbath. For their good
behaviour, the campers were awarded with fake personalized
cheques which they could exchange for goods at a special camp
shop. Recently, the campers took a field trip to Moscow, where
they sang and prayed on Red Square. The organizer of the camp,
Rabbi Berel Lazar, says he hoped to teach these young Russians to
be proud of their religion.

rabbi berel lazar sot (english): the goal of our work is to bring
every jew closer to judaism. we don't care how much closer he will
get to judaism through our work, but at least he should get closer
to it. he should feel and understand what it means to be a jew. he
should start practising some judaism in his home, in his
synagogue, and he should be proud of it.

Little Russian Children`s Library Readers guide
Russia: Furry friend turns kids on to reading
Cat librarian Kyzya was working as hard as any other employee at the children's library in the city of Novorossiysk on Tuesday. The book-addicted feline was found by the library staff wandering around of the building and recruited as the library's pet after they failed to find the owner or a new place for him to live.
The new furry employee earned an assistant librarian position in few weeks, thanks to his skills entertaining kids, greeting users when entering the facilities and performing cat routines such as purring and laying down expecting to be stroked. In return for his work, he gets food, a great amount of scratches and health care.
He is very intelligent and well behaved cat, said chief librarian Anna Lapshina. We took him to our library, also we made all the necessary vaccinations and passport, because we have a lot of kids here.
Kyzya is entitled to walk around the library with a smart bow tie to carry out his activities. He has already received a cat passport that enables him to remain in the public space.

I learned to love to read because when I was a little girl my mother read to me every day. All parents should take the time to read with their children every day and each one of you must take the time to read and to enjoy good books. STORYLINE
United States (US) first lady Laura Bush addressed giggling Russian schoolchildren and excited school librarians on Wednesday at a book festival in Moscow modelled on the annual book-fest she holds in the United States.
Mrs. Bush spent several hours speaking at and touring the first book festival hosted by Russian first lady Lyudmila Putin.
The event focused on children's literature and school libraries.
The US first lady, speaking at the opening session of the festival held in a convention hall just across the Moscow River from the Kremlin, said such events were designed to celebrate books and great writers.
Mrs. Bush was accompanied by an entourage of US writers, the creators of some of America's most popular books for young people; R.L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps series, teen thriller writer Peter Lerangis, who wrote some of the Baby-Sitters Club books, and Marc Brown, who wrote and illustrated the Arthur the Aardvark series.
Marc Brown, author of Aadvark's Adventures and Mrs. Bush held a drawing session with Russian second-graders, followed by a question and answer session.
Beforehand, Mrs. Bush helped Mrs. Putin kick off the public portion of the festival with a short speech in a Moscow convention hall, and then toured several of the exhibits.
With the first ladies of Armenia, Bella Kocharian, and of Bulgaria, Zorka Purvanova, joining Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Putin, the session took on the air of a slightly formal book club.
Mrs. Bush, a former teacher and librarian, said her main mission as first lady was to try to spread the word that reading to children, starting when they were babies, not only helped them develop richer vocabularies but made them feel loved.
Later, on Wednesday evening Mrs Bush attended a private showing of the ballet Don Quixote at Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, organised by Mrs Putin for her guests.

MOSCOW MAYOR HELPS WITH CITY'S ANNUAL SPRING CLEANING
Moscow, Russia Natural Sound Duration: 1.47
Moscow's mayor, Yuri Luzhkov, led by example recently when he took up a shovel on the annual Spring subbotnik, or working Saturday. It's the day when Muscovites help the city authorities by cleaning up the streets and doing other communal services. At the National Library, hundreds helped with restoration work on the historic building. Others swept footpaths and roads and helped clear rubbish from parks. The day is traditionally scheduled around Lenin's birthday on 22 April. In the days under Soviet Communist rule, taking part in the subbotnik was virtually compulsory.

Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov working with shovel in National Library courtyard. SOT Luzhkov in Russian: There should be something around 400,000 Muscovites working on the streets today. Moscow. Walking around the Kremlin Ring [4K]
Kitay Gorod, Bely Gorod and Zaryadye are the oldest districts of Moscow. On their territory are the Kremlin, Red Square, the oldest houses and monasteries. Today we will go around the ring around these areas, which is informally called the Kremlin Ring. This is the smallest circular route around the Kremlin. However, this is one of the most intense walks in the history of the city, since almost every building in it has historical significance. We will pay attention to some of the buildings when walking, however, we highly recommend to personally visit these streets and soak up the spirit of great Moscow!
