Driving around Texas Motor Speedway in a massive traffic jam
How many times have you heard about the traffic for races at Texas Motor Speedway?
Well it’s a tired old story that simply doesn’t hold water any longer but lazy reporters keep pulling out the same tired old story, race after race. More on that later.
How many times did you hear about the traffic going to the Texas-OU game Saturday?
Not once. I heard plenty about DART after the big DART light rail meltdown last year. It appears DART had their stuff together this year – I didn’t hear of any problems.
But I don’t recall reading or seeing a single story about how bad traffic was going to be going to the game. I don’t get to see or read everything, so perhaps I missed something. But there were no pervasive stories about traffic. I’ve been to hundreds of NASCAR races, hundreds of Indy car races, hundreds of NFL and college football games, concerts, festivals, Super Bowls, you name it. I’ve never seen anything like the traffic Saturday or the civic boosterism by the media that turned its back on the story.
Three hours before the game, traffic on I-35E South was backed up all the north of the World Trade Mart. Two-three hours before the game, signs around Fair Park started blinking “Official Lots Full.” Parking pass or not, you were at the mercy of the free market vendors selling you a place to park – whether it was their property or not. It is simply wrong to hold an event for which you do not have sufficient parking. It doesn’t happen at American Airlines Center, it doesn’t happen at Rangers Ballpark, it doesn’t happen at Cowboys Stadium. It certainly doesn’t happen at Texas Motor Speedway.
So where is the outrage? Why aren’t people swearing off going to the game in the future as a result of the trouble? Where is the negative media coverage?
Now to the speedway.
Yes, there was bad traffic in 1997 and 1998. In the first year, rain deluged Texas Motor Speedway on Friday, dumping six inches on the freshly graded turf parking areas. We quickly organized a park-and-ride location, renting buses from churches, schools, charter companies and DART. Amazingly the federal government couldn’t organize buses to move people out of New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina for a couple of weeks, but we moved around 350,000 people on that Saturday and Sunday with less than 18 hours notice. To my stunned surprise, it worked pretty darn well. Not an artistic success by a long shot, but everybody was in their seat when the race started.
The second year people finally had the chance to “find” the speedway for the first time in their own cars. You know, their secret way in and out, that kind of thing. It was a mess, as expected.
But by 1999, things smoothed out. People learned their way in and out. We spent millions of dollars paving more lots (we have more paved parking than Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando) and everything began to flow efficiently. By 2001, we opened a second interchange on I-35W -- Dale Earnhardt Way -- at a cost of $3.5 million to the speedway. The Fort Worth Police really buckled down and began doing an even better job, and today we move the biggest crowds to attend an event in the State of Texas more efficiently than the State Fair of Texas and as quickly as the old Texas Stadium was able to deliver.
