STORYLINE:
Amidst continuing conflict in the Middle East, a popular shopping area in downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, shows how different cultures and religions can live together.
It is named Saara, after the African Sahara n desert, and was created during the Second World War by Jewish and Arabic immigrants fleeing the conflict.
Some of the refugees were shopkeepers in their homelands, and decided to open new businesses.
As they began to make money, parents and relatives followed them to Brazil.
Today, Saara comprises eleven street blocks, and more than one thousand shops in the heart of downtown Rio.
Last Christmas Eve, the area broke all records with 2 (M) million customers buying presents in Saara shops.
But to those who live and work there, Saara is more than a commercial district.
It's also an example of how those of differing Middle-Eastern origins can peacefully co-exist.
A Jewish shop sits directly opposite an Arabic tobacconist, without any dispute or difficulty.
Indeed, Badih Riche, the owner of Shalom, considers Henrique Nihgri to be a close friend.
For the last 15 years, the Saara residents have combined in the creation of their own community radio station.
Every morning, the president of the Shop Owner's Association of Saara, Enio Bittencourt, broadcasts a radio programme with the latest news.
With so many of Saara's residents from the Middle East, the current situation there, as well as the latest news from Iraq, is top of the agenda.
But the conflict overseas has not resulted in any conflict in Saara itself.
Enio Bittencourt sees Saara as the epitome of the melting pot model, where many ethnicities can live together with mutual respect.
Whilst he concedes that those who live and work in Saara have their own problems and issues, they don't interfere in their personal relationships.

For many people, Rio means slipping on a pair of Havaianas and making for Copacabana. Yet the city offers so much more – verdant landscapes, mesmerising mountains and neighbourhoods that pulsate with authentic Brazilian music. As much as the landscape is a study in contrasts, so are its inhabitants. Wealthy areas are bordered with favelas (ghettos), popularly seen as criminal havens. Tourist sites are springing up all the time, breathing new life into these areas. Even in winter, its warm enough to go coastal. Feel the morning breeze in Ipanema, or shop with the cariocas (locals) at Saara Market (or even more charming, Rio Antigo). Head to Tijuca Forest for an afternoon of solitude. At night, get imbued with the samba-infused spirit of Brazilian music in Lapa.**

STORYLINE
The start of the 2010 World Cup may be less than a month away, but football fans in Rio de Janeiro are getting ready to cheer on their team.
In the Saara market, vendors are selling the green and yellow paraphernalia that will take over the city during the tournament, which kicks-off in South Africa in June.
Brazil is hoping to win its sixth World Cup title and one of the fans that will be cheering on the team is Maria Lourdes Souza, who says she can't wait for the global football party to kick-off.
Others in Rio have gone beyond costumes and wigs and have decorated entire neighbourhoods in the national colours of yellow and green.
Amateur street artists in Engenho de Dentro decided to pay tribute to past and present World Cups.
One of their murals even depicts rival Argentina - led to victory in the 1986 World Cup by football legend Diego Maradona.
