Introduction to Safe Passage - Camino Seguro
Safe Passage is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working in Guatemala City to bring hope, education, and opportunity to the children and families living in extreme poverty around the City's garbage dump. Our program includes approximately 550 children, ranging in age from 2 to 21 years, coming from nearly 300 families in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Safe Passage/Camino Seguro - Guatemala
This is the story of Safe Passage/Camino Seguro and their social entrepreneurial endeavor CREAMO. The women of CREAMO are helping their families by becoming literate, by learning skills, and by creating jewelry, handbags, and other salable items made from donated and recycled items. They typically make 65% more selling these items than they would normally make picking out recyclables from the Guatemala City dump.

Safe Passage Sports Program - Juegos por la Vida
Dive into Safe Passage's sports program, based on Change The Game (Juegos por la Vida). Learn how sports like soccer and lacrosse are changing the lives of students living around the Guatemala City garbage dump and see them in action. Safe Passage teaches team sports and youth leadership through activities. We have lacrosse service teams that visit Safe Passage and involve at-risk youth in positive team-based activities to help them stay activity, in school, and out of gangs, off the streets, and out of the Guatemala City garbage dump.
Safe Passage is not only committed to encouraging academic development, but also fostering leadership, community engagement and individual expression. The organization's rich academic curriculum coupled with its recreational program, called Juergos por la Vida (Games for Life), support each student's development as an individual. Beginning with the lacrosse club, Safe Passage's Sports Program has branched into other sports such as soccer, and into other areas including the Break Dance and Urban Art Clubs, evoking the students' artistic expression. During these crucial developmental years, music, art, and sports provide healthy alternatives to getting involved in drugs and violence, and allow the students to create and be proud of their unique identity.
Participating in Juegos por la Vida has impacted numerous Safe Passage students in positive ways. Enrollment in Juegos por la Vida led student Mayori Lopez to discover her talent as a first-place lacrosse player. For Feliciana Brito, playing soccer has helped improve her grades, stay off the streets and strengthen a positive relationship with her mother. 18-year-old Junior Perez, a member of the Break Dance Club, describes how Juegos por la Vida has helped in many ways, including how to develop socially and how to have one's own identity which is very important for each person. The students' parents have been grateful for the opportunities Safe Passage provides for their children.

VVS Guatemala Field Trip 2018
Verde Valley School students spent two weeks immersing themselves in Guatemalan culture and doing projects with several partner organizations. They built 2 homes with Constru Casa in Xepatan village, about 2 hours outside of Antigua. They then worked with Fotokids in Santiago Atitlan and spent time with Camino Seguro (Safe Passage) in the Guatemala City dump. Students also summited the Acatenango Volcano, where they got to witness Volcano Fuego spewing lava regularly.
