st nicholas place kings norton..
Birmingham’s largest collection of Tudor buildings
Kings Norton derives its origin from the basic Early English Nor + tun, meaning North settlement and belonging to or held by the king, when Kings Norton was the northernmost of the berewicks or outlying manors of Bromsgrove in Worcestershire. Before 1066 these manors with many others in Birmingham had belonged to Earl Edwin, the Anglo-Saxon Earl of Mercia. When in that year a Viking army sailed up the River Humber to invade England, Edwin went to do battle, but was heavily defeated at the Battle of Fulford Bridge near York. King Harold arrived the next day, and after defeating the Vikings at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, immediately marched back south to be himself defeated at the Battle of Hastings. Edwin and his broken remnant of an army were unable go with him. Thus, after the Norman Conquest, when William punished Harold's supporters, Edwin was not amongst them and did not forfeit his lands. Two years later, however, Edwin revolted against William who confiscated his holdings to give as rewards to his followers. Bromsgrove and its berewicks he kept, with himself both as tenant-in-chief and manorial lord. Thus the manor became Kings Norton remained royal from Domesday until 1804
Over 900 years of history
Saint Nicolas' Place with its Tudor Merchant’s House, Old Grammar School and Church have survived virtually intact since the 15th Century and are among the Midlands' historic gems.
Now a growing tourist attraction, and a venue for private and corporate events, Saint Nicolas' Place also runs educational visits for schools. Our heritage buildings are complemented by modern facilities including a welcoming café, toilets and gift shop.
Anglo-Saxon in origin, Kings Norton, named Nortune in the Doomsday Book, grew into a prosperous medieval village and in the 19th century became part of the UK’s growing, dynamic second city, Birmingham.
The Tudor Merchant’s House
Humphrey Rotsey’s house is a large, high status merchant’s house with five hundred year old original timbers. Exposed wattle and daub has survived and can still be clearly seen together with evidence of the building’s former history as a Georgian and Victorian public house, remembered locally as the Saracen’s Head.
The Queen’s Room is where Queen Henrietta Maria is reputed to have spent the night in 1643 during the English Civil War. It is a beautiful example of a Tudor interior where an original fireplace, faint remains of Tudor interior décor and window frame grooves can be seen. As the Queen slept, 3000 Royalist Horse troops and 30 companies of foot soldiers camped in Kings Norton.
In the Gable Room you can see the original, newly-exposed Tudor gable, hidden for decades behind a later extension. The gable end, once the front of the house, looked out onto The Green.
By prior arrangement, visitors with an academic interest can view the extensive hidden roof timber work of the east range and our large archive.
The Old Grammar School
One of the oldest school buildings in the country.
Massive oak roof timbers felled between 1434 and 1460.
Faint but visible, remnants of Tudor decoration thought to have been scratched into the woodwork to ward off evil spirits.
Fletcher marks where yeomen of the village sharpened their arrow heads and marks on the window mullions where generations of students sharpened their pen knives to cut nibs into quill pens.
Saint Nicolas Church
The much-loved and heavily-used parish church of Kings Norton.
Norman in origin. Largely 13th century and first documented in 1231.
A 15th century tower and a spire 60 metres high.
Two 12th century chancel windows.
The 16th century tombs of the Lyttleton and Grevis families.
A memorial to a murdered 17th Century tax collector.
Extensive & beautiful 19th century stained glass windows by Kempe and Hardman.

Places to see in ( Alcester - UK )
Places to see in ( Alcester - UK )
Alcester is a market town and civil parish of Roman origin at the junction of the River Alne and River Arrow in Warwickshire, England. It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) west of Stratford-upon-Avon, and 8 miles south of Redditch, close to the Worcestershire border.
Alcester was founded by the Romans in around AD 47 as a walled fort. The walled colonia named Alauna developed from the military camp. It was sited on Icknield Street (or Ryknild Street), a Roman road that ran the length of Britannia from the north east near Hadrian's Wall to southwest England. The town was also just north of the Fosse Way, another important thoroughfare in Roman Britain.
Alcester was also the site of Alcester Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in 1138 by Ralph le Boteler. Richard de Tutbury, the last abbot, resigned his office in 1467 and Alcester Abbey was absorbed into the neighbouring Evesham Abbey. By 1515 Alcester Abbey was in ruins as a result of the neglect of various abbots, and later during the Dissolution of the Monasteries Henry VIII it was largely demolished.
Alcester was previously served by Alcester railway station belonging to the Midland Railway (later part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway), on the Gloucester Loop Line, branching off the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway main line at Ashchurch, passing through Evesham railway station, Alcester and Redditch and rejoining the main line at Barnt Green, near Bromsgrove. The loop was built to address the fact that the main line bypassed most of the towns it might otherwise have served, but it took three separate companies to complete, Alcester being on the Evesham and Redditch Railway prior to absorption by the Midland.
In addition a branch line provided by the Alcester Railway company (later part of the Great Western Railway) ran from Alcester to Bearley, thus giving access to Stratford-upon-Avon. This line, however, was an early casualty, closing in September 1939. The Midland loop was due to close between Ashchurch and Redditch in June 1963 but the poor condition of the track led to all trains between Evesham and Redditch being withdrawn in October 1962 and replaced by a bus service for the final eight months. Redditch to Barnt Green remains open on the electrified Birmingham suburban network. Alcester is served by buses from Redditch, Evesham and Stratford upon Avon.
Alcester is also known for two nearby stately homes. To the north is Coughton Court, the family seat of the Throckmorton baronets as well as a National Trust property. To the south-west is Ragley Hall, the home of the Marquis of Hertford, whose gardens contain a children's adventure playground. Kinwarton, which is just north of Alcester, contains a church of Anglo Saxon origin and a historic dovecote, Kinwarton Dovecote, which is also a National Trust property. Alcester is also a significant town on the 100-mile-long Heart of England Way long-distance walking route.

The Civil War Ghosts of Kings Norton Green
St Nicolas Church, Kings Norton, Birmingham. A site survey of the haunted graveyard. St Nicolas Church was built circa 1080 AD. It is one of only four Medieval churches left within the city limits, (the other three being St Edburgha of Yardley, St Laurence of Northfield and St Giles of Sheldon). Haunted by the ghosts of Cavaliers & Roundheads buried in a Mass Grave after The Battle of Kings Norton Green.
On the 17th October 1642, during The English Civil War, a violent and bloody battle took place outside of St Nicolas, a battle which raged across the village green. Defending Kings Norton for King Charles was the valiant Prince Rupert who commanded 8 Troops of Cavalry & 300 Infantry. The Royalists were attacked by a Roundhead Army, commanded by Lord Willoughby, who commanded 800 Cavalry.
The battle is said to have been vicious, of close quarter hand to hand combat. After hours of brutal bloodshed, Prince Rupert made a tactical retreat. Neither Royalist nor Parliamentarian could claim a decisive victory. At the end of the battle all of the dead soldiers, both Cavalier & Roundhead, were buried together in a Mass Grave in St Nicolas Graveyard. The approximate losses on each side were reported as 50 dead Royalists and 20 dead Roundheads. Though as it was reported by the Roundhead forces, its possible their actual dead was numbered more equal to their enemies' dead.
It is the Ghosts of these English Civil War dead that haunt St Nicolas Place and Kings Norton Green. Next door to St Nicolas Church is St Nicolas Place, a Tudor built Manor House once known as The Saracens Head public house - which is today a community centre. This building is also haunted by a Civil War Ghost - that of a young serving girl who died during the big influenza outbreak of July 1643.

Serbian Orthodox Church Of The Holy Prince Lazar Bournville Birmingham UK
If you go into the leafy suburbs of Bournville Birmingham you come across a strange building. It is the Serbian Orthodox Church of The Holy Prince Lazar completed in 1968.
They opened their doors for the heritage weekend in 2017 and we went in. The priest was talking.
He explained in muted English that they hold services every Saturday night which last between 2 and 3 hours. The congregation is usually over 150 people with the women facing the icon of Mary on the left and the men facing the Icon of Jesus on the right. The service has music plain chant which he demonstrated. Let us listen as we admire the church
We have seen a vibrant heart of a community. One that observes a faith that is unchanging and fundamental in it’s vision. Thanks for watching.

My Favorite Place
I’d been researching my family tree. The trail led to Chilham in Kent. UK. My Grandfather, his Wife and two children, moved from Brenchly to Chilham, where he opened a Bakery in the Village in the late 1920s. I was familiar with Chilham and knew it to be very picturesque. A nice place to visit.
The 25th September was a beautiful day so I took the opportunity to go down to Chilham to find the Bakery. I had the Camcorder set up in the windscreen and the Radio tuned to ‘Radio Kent.’ It was quite a coincidence that they were doing a thing about “Your Favorite Place.” Phone in. So the soundtrack to the Video was recorded from ‘Radio Kent’ as I was driving through Chilham.
