Gőreme:
In a spectacular landscape, entirely sculpted by erosion, the Göreme valley and its surroundings contain rock-hewn sanctuaries that provide unique evidence of Byzantine art in the post-Iconoclastic period. Dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns -- the remains of a traditional human habitat dating back to the 4th century -- can also be seen there. The rupestral sanctuaries of Cappadocia constitute an unique artistic achievement in a region of superlative natural features, providing irreplaceable testimony to post-iconoclast Byzantium. The dwellings, village convents and churches retain the fossilized images of a province of the Byzantine Empire between the 4th century and the Turkish invasion.
The eroded plateau of the Göreme valley is a spectacular example of the effects of differential erosion of the volcanic tuff sediments by wind and water. Typical features are pillars, columns, towers, obelisks and needles that reach heights of 40 m. The major remnant of erosion, Akdağ (1,325 m), is the dominant feature in the valley. The nearby Erciyas volcano is still active with occasional minor eruptions. Its outstanding example represents the Earth's evolutionary history. Within these rock formations people have excavated a network of caves which served as refuges, residences, storage and places of worship dating from the 4th century. The surrounding landscape is agricultural with a number of small scattered rural villages. The historical setting, the rock-hewn churches and the unusual eroded landforms combine to produce a mixed cultural/natural landscape of unusual appearance. Architectural styles are based on the local stone and the valley has changed little over the centuries.Although the area has been extensively used and modified by man for centuries the resulting landscape is one of harmony and consideration of the intrinsic values of the natural landforms. After 842, however, many rupestral churches were dug in Cappadocia. These churches were richly decorated with brightly coloured figurative painting. Among them were those in the Göreme valley: Tokalı Kilise, El Nazar Kilise (10th century), Barbara Kilise, Saklı Kilise (11th century), Elmalı Kilise and Karanlık Kilise (end of the 12th to beginning of the 13th centuries), etc.
Göreme, located among the fairy chimney rock formations, is a town in Cappadocia, a historical region of Turkey. It is in the Nevşehir Province in Central Anatolia and has a population of around 2,500 people.Former names of the town have been Korama, Matiana, Maccan or Machan, and Avcilar. When Göreme Valley nearby was designated an important tourist destination, a center for all tourism in Cappadocia, the name of the town was changed to Göreme for practical reasons.
The Göreme National Park (Göreme Milli Parklar in Turkish) was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
The location of Göreme was first settled back in the Roman period. Christianity was then the prevailing religion in the region, which is evident from many rock churches that can still be seen today.
Among Göreme's historically important sites are Ortahane, Durmus Kadir, Yusuf Koc and Bezirhane churches, in addition to the richly decorated Tokali Kilise, the Apple Church, and a number of homes and pigeon houses carved straight into the rock formations in the town. Wikipedia

Churches of Cappadocia
These images were taken at the Goreme open-air museum in Cappadocia. It is estimated that there are more than 600rock-cut churches in Cappadocia.
You will note that many frescoes are damaged by centuries of graffiti and the deliberate disfigurement of faces dating from Islamic times.
Since no flash pictures are allowed, these images were taken using a 'night' setting.
Soğanlı Ören Yeri’nde Kiliseler Tahrip Ediliyor | 22.03.2019
KAYSERİ’nin Yeşilhisar ilçesindeki Soğanlı Ören Yeri’nde yılda 45 bin yerli ve yabancı turistin ziyaret ettiği 8 kilisenin duvarları son 5 yılda ciddi oranda tahrip edildi. Üzerlerine yazılar yazılan fresklerin tahrip edilmesi büyük tepki çekti.
Romalılar Mezarlık, Bizanslılar ise Kilise Olarak Kullandı
Kayseri, Niğde ve Nevşehir üçgeninde yer alan Yeşilhisar ilçe merkezine 15 kilometre uzaklıktaki Soğanlı Ören Yeri, kaya kiliseleri ve mağaraların bugünkü evler ile iç içe girdiği bir vadi içerisinde bulunuyor. M.S. 4’üncü yüzyıldan itibaren Hristiyanlığın Kapadokya’daki merkezlerinden biri olan, önemini 7 ve 8’inci yüzyıllarda da sürdüren Soğanlı Ören Yeri’nde 50’ye yakın kaya kilisesi ve mağara bulunuyor. Bunlardan ziyarete açık olan 8 kiliseyi, her yıl binlerce kişi ziyaret ediyor.
Son 5 Yılda Tahribat Arttı
2018 yılında 11 bin 500’ü yabancı, 32 bini yerli turistin ziyaret ettiği kiliselerde, stil açısından 10-12’nci yüzyılları yansıtan freskler, son 5 yılda büyük oranda tahribata edildi. Ziyarete açık olan Karabaş, Kubbeli, Tahtalı, Yılanlı, Saklı,Tokalı, Ballık ve Geyikli kiliselerinde mezarlar, İsa Mesih ve havarilere ait resimler ile İncil’den sahnelerin canlandırıldığı fresklerdeki tahribat son dönemde iyice arttı. Gözleri oyulan fresklerin her birinin üzeri, farklı dillerde yazılmış yazılarla doldu.

Haunted church with a dark past. Strange things caught on camera. Were we really alone?
We explore one of Wales most haunted locations.
In our first official explore we visit a church decimated by fire that hides a dark past. Surrounded by a cemetery that dates back to the 1700s, myths and folklore paint this church in a sinister manner, could any of it be true? We capture things we have never seen before and cannot explain. Were we really alone?

Exploring Hidden Cappadocia Church
Goreme Open Air Museum, Cappadocia
While in Goreme, a must place to visit is the Goreme open air museum.
A single day entrance ticket will cost 30 Turkish Lira. That is about $10 USD for all day entrance plus it gives you access to a church with awesome Christian paintings, that is located about 50 meters away from the main museum.
Be aware, bring water with you. I didn't see any stores selling items inside the museum, and it can get really hot under the sun.
Also, be aware, photographs are not always permitted in some of the cave rooms with paintings and security will warn you not to photograph or video inside.
In the park you will see fairy chimneys, cave homes, cave kitchens, prayer rooms, etc.
You can walk there from the center of Goreme in about 15 minutes. Or rent a 4x4 quad or a horse, but park it by the entrance. Yes, there is parking for cars as well.
I saw tourist buses nearby, so there are tours that come there from other cities, but I have no information on that.
Keep on Traveling!
